Bullets piss off bears too. And you can run out of bullets, just like bear spray. A bear is a moving target…plus the target area is smaller as the bear coming at you. Similar to a bear spray, a pistol is close range item too.

With both weapons, it is technique/delivery/skill. You have to keep your composure and concentrate.

With bear spray, you first gauge the wind. (It was a slight breeze coming from my left.)

When the bear is about 100 feet away and charging towards you, you release a one second stream to form a cloud. The cloud will be about 30 feet from you. If the bear continues charging through the cloud, it is now in range. You unload the rest of the spray in the bears face. 5 seconds worth.

Ford Cuts Battery Orders as EV Losses Top $100,000 Per Car by PanzersGhost in technology

[–]YoMamma 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

This is true, if one looks at a reliable source like Bloomberg, but it's not surprising after the UK, Germany, the US and other countries have refused in the past year or to honor their previous promises require EV or partial EV cars and other climate change restrictive measures, postponing their goals for another few years. This hit Ford and some other companies the hardest. Big Oil obviously still has a very strong grip on global markets, and they bankroll global warming denying (anti-science) websites like, climatedepot.com:

ClimateDepot.com is the website of the Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow (CFACT) employee Marc Morano, a conservative global warming denier who previously served as environmental communications director for a vocal political denier of climate change, Republican Sen. James Inhofe.

According to their about page “ClimateDepot.com, spearheaded by Morano, will serve as an information clearinghouse and one-stop shopping for reporters, policymakers, students, scientists and concerned citizens to get the latest information on global warming and other key environmental and energy issues.”

The Climate Depot is owned and published through CFACT, which is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that is mostly funded through the Donor’s Trust. The purpose of the Donor’s Trust Fund is to “safeguard the intent of libertarian and conservative donors.” In other words, it allows anti-climate change advocates to donate anonymously. In the past, CFACT received over $500,000 from Exxon-Mobil.

https://www.quora.com/Why-do-oil-fields-oil-rigs-burn-gas answers your flare question. If you think you know better than the people in the O&G industry, feel free to start a new company.

Energy has forever been scarce, otherwise the price wouldn't be wildly different per continent. If you think it is not scarce, start buying it in one cheap place and transport it to an expensive place.

Food is pretty scarce too, because there are a lot of people and not all of them can eat the best. If you don't believe food is scarce, visit North-Korea. I think housing is artificially limited, due to pointless regulations, so that would be a good example, but you would have to substantiate it with specific references in resources such as https://buildingtheskyline.org/skyscrapers-and-affordability/. By definition land is in limited supply, and housing prices are related to the price of land, so a skyscraper only becomes an option when the price of land is very high (since building higher is more costly (and this will always remain the case). So, regulations have an impact on housing prices, but you have not demonstrated how large this impact is. As such, your arguments are only convincing at a first glance.

Research papers funded with public money should be free, yes, but often already are.

Cell phone service is already at $10/month.

Internet uses power and as such can't be "free", but I agree that it's not a free market.

The fiber market for example, is unfair, because the first company to dig somewhere doesn't need to care about the fiber of someone else. The second company has higher digging costs and can't be competitive anymore.

If you look at the supporters of the bill, it seems like this one is sponsored by the Kremlin.

Why would the Kremlin care if Americans are debt slaves?

The power of the Fed has already been diminished in some way. If the supporters of this bill actually believed in it, they would just not hold any USD denominated assets,

The federal reserve being an arm of the international bankers and the IMF international monetary forum have diminished power since 1913? That sounds more optimistic. But do you see the wording: "to customers who are available to receive service"? That is vague, but lower down they specify that some houses have damage that customers must fix themselves. I suppose they are not "available to receive service". And for those it could be weeks before they might be able to hire an electrician to fix their house.

If the equipment is damaged, customers will need to contact a qualified electrician to make repairs before the company can restore service to them.

There will be a wait time on these jobs: waiting for insurance adjusters to authorize payments and waiting for an electrician to be ready to work. Some people might not even be able to afford the deductible on their insurance, or have no insurance.

don't need to use artificial scarcity,

Need is one of those con artist words like "all". For example bullshiters will always argue that "not all..." to discredit any argument they don't have a real argument against.

People don't need gold or ammo, so those things are weak tools of control. Things that are powerful control tools like energy, food, housing, are not naturally scarce. Natural gas is literally burned off at oil wells as a waste product, yet your heating costs go up every year. Natural gas should be nearly free. Farmers are paid not to grow crops to keep food prices high. Regulations keep cheap homes from being built.

Without artificial scarcity most people would be able to work 3 months out of the year and support a family of 5. But then they would spend 9 months of the year figuring out how much they are getting fucked by the kleptocrats. Idle minds are free to think. Idle hands are free change things.

Research papers should be free. Internet should be free. Cell phone service should be $10 a month. There are thousands of unnecessary and unjust ways in which everyone is sucked dry because that keeps them too weak, too poor, to preoccupied with trying to make more money to ever become a problem for those in power.

In Red Sea, US Navy paying the price of shipbuilding failures | The Littoral Combat Ship was designed with the current crisis in mind, instead it turned into a boondoggle. Here's why. by RandomCollection in WayOfTheBern

USA can no longer design, period. Combat ships, airplanes, hypersonic missiles, spacecraft, anything. USA no longer has that ability. The last successful design was the covertly military Starlink satellite system, and nobody can say who actually designed it.

Want to make a joke about sustainability or environment vs practicality I don't know... it's hilarious though just on its own.

Just add 100k to the sticker price of every Ford EV to get the real cost, oh and something for a profit too maybe another 10k? There is your true cost! What a total scam of the century.

They're saying everyone should have power by Wednesday.

As of 10:30 a.m., more than 82% of CenterPoint customers, or 2.3 million, currently have power. The company is working to have restorations substantially complete by the end of the day Wednesday to customers who are available to receive service.

High levels of glyphosate found in more than half of sperm samples by Drewski in Health

[–]iamonlyoneman 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

For the lazy: about half of guys at a french infertility clinic had glyphosate levels of 0.7 nanograms per millileter in their jism. This is more than none, but not just a whole lot.

also: the error bars are interesting. the detected amounts in samples from non-smokers is so small, the error bars don't even overlap the error bars from smokers. https://ars.els-cdn.com/content/image/1-s2.0-S014765132400486X-gr1.jpg Table 3 is arranged in a way that makes me suspicous, because of what they left out. It seems like, from looking between the lines, if you don't smoke, you don't have detectable levels of glyphosate in your blood or semen, if you are one of these patients. That's such a bonkers level of difference, it makes me question the study as a whole, and makes me feel like smugposting about how people who smoke are absolute mongs if the study was done properly. Perhaps the oxidative stress from smoking is what allows the bad chemicals to bioaccumulate?

Perhaps this study is a nail in the coffin of legal cigarettes, more than an indictment of acricultural herbicides.

For the ignorant: nano means approximately none.

I use a Mercer Renaissance, it's a knock off of the Wüsthof IKON classic at a fraction of the price. Same steel, same basic blade geometry although the Mercer is slightly better for rocking chops.

Japanese steel tends to be harder, sharper, and more brittle than western steel knives. They make great knives but they're not as general purpose.

exactly as angrily as they were screaming "you can have a live daughter or a dead son!" for the previous ~12 years

I agree, but I think it's mostly ignorance and a general lack of intelligence. Corruption exists everywhere in positions of power, but the general public isn't held back by corruption. Your position is very optimistic, because it suggests things can change.

The elite (whoever those are, because our political leaders are certainly not elite anymore) don't need to use artificial scarcity, because there is still actual scarcity (for example Au is not exactly abundant). Some types of cheese are branded and sometimes even the biology is "protected" and that's a type of intellectual property that shouldn't exist for basically forever. Even for such a simple thing as ammo there is an actual shortage and that's because for anything with non-trivial demand it's difficult to match supply and demand. However, I do concede that given enough automation that's a thing of the past.

His generator was just powering the tv, router, lights and two fridges. I think the only thing they can't run on it is the central AC, but he has a couple window units in case they're needed.

I was surprised, a mere 20lb tank ran everything for 9 hours.

Our power went back on at 2:47am , theirs didn't come online until 6pm. Pretty impressive times considering the widespread outages.
