I understand exactly what you mean, believe me, but it's clear that the political divisions in the United States are primarily media-driven. I worry that the "fuck 'em, they voted for Trump" attitude is nothing but the obverse of this, and that the divisions produced in both cases benefit only one class, and we know which class that is.

I just think we'll never overcome the oppression of all of us by that class without real solidarity within our own class. Don't forget how our fellows behaved when we were COVID dissidents, but again, never forget why they behaved that way. There was nothing organic about it. Fight the real enemy.

I want to be clear and point out that I hold the media responsible for causing this kind of emotional hardship in these people's lives. It is unforgivable to work the masses into such a froth of anticipation, and then when the "desired" outcome doesn't come to pass, to leave them in an emotional abyss, some of them in genuinely abject terror.

I thought in 2016 that these people were just being spiteful, that they actually understood that it wasn't so dire, that they were just showing their asses. After Tuesday night, seeing the reaction among ordinary people, I'm not so sure anymore. I think there is a wide swath of the populace who really believe that the election of Trump will almost immediately affect their lives negatively, that they have the Sword of Damocles hanging above their heads between now and January 20.

I hope that, like me, you'll give a moment's consideration to having sympathy for our fellow citizens. Let's hope together that there are no lethal consequences to the depraved indifference of the corporate media. Take it upon yourself to sympathetically talk someone down if you're given the opportunity. Yes, Trump is an asshole. Fuck him. But he is decidedly not Hitler. Dispel the boogeyman trope, if only to ease the distress of our fellows.

I particularly like the way Thomas Kuhn's idea of the collapse of paradigms is brought in at the end of the article to illustrate the collapse of the prior ideological regime. Remarkably apt, and speaking as one who experienced that collapse keenly (following my political exile due to the dissolution of party political bonds just a single election cycle before), I can say that this both articulates and reinforces the feeling I had, but hadn't yet fully assimilated and expressed.

I have, up until the last few years, supported a government-as-single-payer health care system. My concern after the COVID debacle is that, given the appalling behavior of the medical community during the "pandemic," it is quite possible that any health care provided might well be conditional on each patient receiving it complying with a set of requirements, including (especially) the jab, among other questionable procedures, before their right to healthcare is fulfilled. I, for one, do not wish to become a subject to Big Pharma, which is likely to have an outsized role in the provision of treatment.

I want healthcare provision placed directly in the hands of the citizenry, with direct democratic control over its operation, with government as a citizens' tool to direct it to their own ends, rather than to some nebulous ends decided by some obscure board or a body of elite shareholders seeing to their own interests at the expense of the citizenry.

Marc Lamont Hill SLAMS Black Preachers for Letting 'Genocide Joe' Exploit The Church, starts about 1:12 by penelopepnortney in WayOfTheBern

[–]Promyka5 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Yeah, that might work better. I recognize the gatekeeping function of the Church that had to be overcome at such great cost at the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the Rennaisance (Galileo's recantation, for instance), but the overpowering influence of the Church had waned considerably by the time Marx wrote his Opiate line, explaining why he might have chosen that word over another word, like 'straitjacket' or 'cudgel.'

I think that the contemporary function of the Church (or rather, the splintered collection of denominations and sects that we might instead refer collectively to as 'churches') might be more accurately viewed as supporting dissidence rather than as oppressive to it. Remember that churches were systemically shut down at the opening moment of the lockdown in 2020, probably to reduce dissidence to the naked authoritarianism, dissidence that they might have suborned. Although I'm not religious myself, nor a member of any congregation, I recognize that a considerable source of such dissidence in discussions of this and many other issues in our contemporary social milieu is that collection of various congregations that we call churches.

I think the cell phone and social media serve such a function to a much lesser degree, and serve the function of suppressing independent thought to a much greater degree.

That whole "religion is the opiate of the masses" thing really gets me. I know socialists still say this sort of thing, but it seems reflexive rather than reflective to me. If the Church had been nearly as effective back in the day as smartphones and social media are today at marginalizing and ostracizing dissident voices (read: CANCELLING), there would never have been any socialist revolutions at all.

And imagine reading a story from an 1882 newspaper about a devoutly religious person being run down by a horse and buggy because he was crossing the street without looking up from his Bible! How would the editorial take then (and people's opinions) differ from a story now about a pedestrian run down by a car because he was looking down at his phone!

I for one am glad he's overtly taken the position he has. His doing so unapologetically reveals the most important information about Kennedy as a candidate, information we all need to know.

Based entirely on the position he took during the COVID debacle, I would have supported him to the ends of the earth, all other positions of his notwithstanding, had they remained nebulous. But knowing that his concerns over the vaccines' formulation, their being unjustly mandated, and the subsequent suppression of any dissent, all in the service of individual Liberty of medical choice, are all tempered by an unapologetic support for an evident genocide with no criticism or circumspection, I now know all I need to know in order to make my choice: I will cast no ballot for Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.

It pains me to say so, but I was nearly ready to follow another political hero, when I thought I had learned my lesson after Bernie Sanders. Thank you, RFKJr, for startling me enough to regain my senses.

Coincidentally, there's also a party that calls itself the Democratic Party these days. I don't understand much about them really, but suffice to say they suck.

This exactly. Corporations don't have rights (despite Mitt Romney's protestations) because, if they did, presumably those rights would have to include the right to own other people (corporations), which they do now, and if so, presumably the right to own you and me as well. And yes, countries do not have rights, though all persons within the borders of that country do have inalienable rights.

Where the rights of countries come into conflict with the rights of humans, the humans ALWAYS lose.

Human beings are the only beings with the inherent right to exist. States that operate to violate that right are illegitimate.

Couldn't you just paint swastikas on them, you know, something less obnoxiously offensive? What about the Synagogues of antiZionist Orthodox Jews, will they have to be blown up as well now that the Orthodox are no longer considered to be Jews by fanatical Zionists?

Is there any conceivable way this plan could go tragically sideways for this extremist Rabbi and his ilk? Nah, they've probably spent copious amounts of time working out all of the possible contingencies. I'm sure it'll work out just fine. And it will be easy work without a conscience to get in your way.

I'll second all of that. I'm just glad that this disaster didn't wait a year until after RFKjr's miraculous ascencion to the Presidency, but happened now while there's still time to observe his true colors and make another plan.

The anti-Jewish sentiment we're seeing is as a result of a) the inhumane actions of the State of Israel against unarmed civilians during their frequent military assaults in residential Gaza, and b) the deliberate conflation of the responsibility for these actions by that state with the responsibility for these actions by all Jews everywhere. To attribute the motivations of protestors demanding the recognition of Palestinian human rights to hatred of Jews is equally as disingenuous and cynical, and anyone singing that song knows it, including RFKjr.

If Jewish students on college campuses feel unsafe, it's because they choose to be on the wrong side of this issue. Plenty of Jewish students are also involved in protesting the actions of the State of Israel; have they been asked whether they, too feel unsafe?

Today I bought Peter Gabriel Plays Live second hand on nearly pristine vinyl, and I was over the moon about it!

The first track I put on when I got it home was this homage to an Apartheid martyr from an earlier era, Stephen Biko:

Zionism has its roots in antiSemitism. Here in this video is further proof of its corruption of Judaism, becoming a stridently anti-humanist ideology. My heart breaks knowing that there are such people in this world, god help us.

And here I thought that everything was upside-down before this business....

I've been on a massive Indigo Girls kick lately. I recently bought Come On Now Social, second hand of course, and it's currently in heavy rotation in the car. I've dug them since the very beginning, and I doubt if I could think of a single dud of theirs, even if pressed.

Zionism isn't a bad word! It just means that if you support Palestinians' human rights, then you hate all Jews everywhere forever, you disgusting antiSemite.

I saw this segment earlier, and it made me furious. How could the country let one of its most celebrated Olympic champions fall into such a state of destitution? Every time I think the US could not fall into further disrepute and ignominy, it says, "hold my beer." Repugnant.

Get well soon, Mary Lou. I'm pulling for you as hard now as I did back when you were on top of the world.
