I have, up until the last few years, supported a government-as-single-payer health care system. My concern after the COVID debacle is that, given the appalling behavior of the medical community during the "pandemic," it is quite possible that any health care provided might well be conditional on each patient receiving it complying with a set of requirements, including (especially) the jab, among other questionable procedures, before their right to healthcare is fulfilled. I, for one, do not wish to become a subject to Big Pharma, which is likely to have an outsized role in the provision of treatment.

I want healthcare provision placed directly in the hands of the citizenry, with direct democratic control over its operation, with government as a citizens' tool to direct it to their own ends, rather than to some nebulous ends decided by some obscure board or a body of elite shareholders seeing to their own interests at the expense of the citizenry.

[–]Promyka5 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Yeah, that might work better. I recognize the gatekeeping function of the Church that had to be overcome at such great cost at the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the Rennaisance (Galileo's recantation, for instance), but the overpowering influence of the Church had waned considerably by the time Marx wrote his Opiate line, explaining why he might have chosen that word over another word, like 'straitjacket' or 'cudgel.'

I think that the contemporary function of the Church (or rather, the splintered collection of denominations and sects that we might instead refer collectively to as 'churches') might be more accurately viewed as supporting dissidence rather than as oppressive to it. Remember that churches were systemically shut down at the opening moment of the lockdown in 2020, probably to reduce dissidence to the naked authoritarianism, dissidence that they might have suborned. Although I'm not religious myself, nor a member of any congregation, I recognize that a considerable source of such dissidence in discussions of this and many other issues in our contemporary social milieu is that collection of various congregations that we call churches.

I think the cell phone and social media serve such a function to a much lesser degree, and serve the function of suppressing independent thought to a much greater degree.

That whole "religion is the opiate of the masses" thing really gets me. I know socialists still say this sort of thing, but it seems reflexive rather than reflective to me. If the Church had been nearly as effective back in the day as smartphones and social media are today at marginalizing and ostracizing dissident voices (read: CANCELLING), there would never have been any socialist revolutions at all.

And imagine reading a story from an 1882 newspaper about a devoutly religious person being run down by a horse and buggy because he was crossing the street without looking up from his Bible! How would the editorial take then (and people's opinions) differ from a story now about a pedestrian run down by a car because he was looking down at his phone!

I for one am glad he's overtly taken the position he has. His doing so unapologetically reveals the most important information about Kennedy as a candidate, information we all need to know.

Based entirely on the position he took during the COVID debacle, I would have supported him to the ends of the earth, all other positions of his notwithstanding, had they remained nebulous. But knowing that his concerns over the vaccines' formulation, their being unjustly mandated, and the subsequent suppression of any dissent, all in the service of individual Liberty of medical choice, are all tempered by an unapologetic support for an evident genocide with no criticism or circumspection, I now know all I need to know in order to make my choice: I will cast no ballot for Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.

It pains me to say so, but I was nearly ready to follow another political hero, when I thought I had learned my lesson after Bernie Sanders. Thank you, RFKJr, for startling me enough to regain my senses.

It exists in that distant country known as the Past. The party was known as the Democratic Party, and they featured such populist figures as Roosevelt and Huey Long. They were enormously popular, established such beloved institutions as Social Security and Medicare (considered third-rail issues), supported unions and workers' issues, and thereby built the broadest, sturdiest political coalition in the nation's history.

Coincidentally, there's also a party that calls itself the Democratic Party these days. I don't understand much about them really, but suffice to say they suck.

This exactly. Corporations don't have rights (despite Mitt Romney's protestations) because, if they did, presumably those rights would have to include the right to own other people (corporations), which they do now, and if so, presumably the right to own you and me as well. And yes, countries do not have rights, though all persons within the borders of that country do have inalienable rights.

Where the rights of countries come into conflict with the rights of humans, the humans ALWAYS lose.

The anti-Jewish sentiment we're seeing is as a result of a) the inhumane actions of the State of Israel against unarmed civilians during their frequent military assaults in residential Gaza, and b) the deliberate conflation of the responsibility for these actions by that state with the responsibility for these actions by all Jews everywhere. To attribute the motivations of protestors demanding the recognition of Palestinian human rights to hatred of Jews is equally as disingenuous and cynical, and anyone singing that song knows it, including RFKjr.

If Jewish students on college campuses feel unsafe, it's because they choose to be on the wrong side of this issue. Plenty of Jewish students are also involved in protesting the actions of the State of Israel; have they been asked whether they, too feel unsafe?

That's the rumor I've heard, too. Most of us regard the Libertarian Party as a sort of laissez-faire, economically right-leaning party, and for decades it has been. Kennedy will certainly run from the left, but I don't imagine that will be terribly contentious in a party that no one would characterize as doctrinaire.

I'm still not convinced that our way out of this mire is via electoral politics, and Bernie Sanders is the very last instance of my hitching a wagon to any candidate in hopes of a savior. In the words of the late, great Tina Turner, "We don't need another hero." Best of luck to Mr. Kennedy, but he'll have to earn my vote. I'm watching very carefully to see where this might go.

It's quite possible that, with the name Weinstein, he's conditioned to be excessively sensitive to perceived biases toward Jews, and thus he mistakes Waters' legitimate critiques of the Israeli state for antiSemitic remarks. He explicitly states that the perceived antiSemitism he is pointing out is nothing more than one man's opinion. I happen to disagree with him, and I, like Waters, am also intensely critical of the inhumane treatment of the Palestinians at the hands of Israelis.

On the second point I agree entirely. Let anyone and everyone speak their mind, regardless of the position they might take. Why wouldn't anyone prefer someone's antiSemitism, racism, misogyny, or any other prejudice to be evident to all rather than sequestered in small pockets of like-thinkers to fester and intensify? Let those prejudices receive their full airing in open discourse. Did anyone think they might somehow be refuted while being whispered in private conversations in closed rooms among avowed racists? Sunlight, as they say, is the best disinfectant. Argue rationally with a racist and you might not change his mind, but you might influence the views of fence-sitting onlookers.

Stellar political analysis by MSNBC that indicates Biden losing support among this or that demographic. Why? It's a total mystery why anyone "of color" would cozy up to a fascist white supremacist. Which Trump is. Because we know it and knew it already for a while so no point bothering to indicate how it's known. What does he stand for? Well, hate, I guess. And what does Biden stand for? Hmm, doesn't say here anywhere. But better stuff, surely, because anything is better than raw, inchoate hate, which is all Trump stands for. So why is he losing ground among a particular artificial demographic? Get out your Tarot cards and your Ouiji board and your divining rods if you want to plumb the depths of this great mystery.

The tyrants are still moving full-bore ahead with their agenda, apparently ignorant of the fact that the spell is already broken. Few people now blindly accept the pronouncements of any of the official media organs. Skepticism is the new pandemic! It's catching quickly! And that is intensely problematic for them, since, as Caitlin Johnstone likes to remind us, they still require our consent, which is why they even still work so hard to manufacture it.

Here's a video from a short while back that I had to search to find, which I think is pertinent:

Again, mundane fires just don't burn this way.

Agreed. This is one of those topics that is likely to reflexively be branded "conspiracy theorizing," at least until video evidence is forthcoming, which has to be explained in conventional terms, but given what's apparent to the eye, those explanations stretch credulity. While other plausible explanations might explain so-called "chemtrails," though I haven't come to any conclusions on that matter, fires resulting from directed energy weapons are fires of an entirely different sort. And it seems this is why the burned area on the island of Maui is being blocked off from public access.

If we had continued down the road of a regular public health response, opinions like these from our national public health leaders would have continued to be published and discussed openly. There would have been open discussion of the virus’s potential harms, and expert debates about various response measures. There would have been no need to censor any particular opinion or disseminate propaganda supporting any other.

But then, as we all know, we had to move at the speed of Science™.

A large part of the rise in the cost of living is fuel prices. Interestingly, the petroleum corporations are the recipients of ENORMOUS welfare subsidies. Even so, it's poor people getting the squeeze in this economy and living on the dole who get bagged on for receiving welfare for some reason.

I'm a big folkie, and the first time I heard it, my reaction was joy at hearing such vital new folk music. Call it country if you like, and maybe country is his chosen genre, but this one is destined to be a folk classic, in my opinion. The guy practically channels Woody Guthrie.

The rich don't socialize like normal people, getting to know neighbors and looking for opportunities to interact as equals for social enrichment; they "network" in order to open up and exploit further financial or professional opportunities for the enrichment of their own power, prestige, and wealth. They are the role models we are expected to emulate, and thus the direction of society: circular and downward.

What portion of that $20 billion in weaponry is going to be siphoned off by the Ukrainian Nazis to be shipped to neo-Nazis worldwide (including in the US) for the purposes of committing violence and mayhem?

Trick question -- there ARE no Nazis in Ukraine! So nothing to be worried about; not at all like Charlottesville.

I don't support Trump at all, but it's clear that this is a political maneuver. Try to imagine how loud the uproar would have been if Trump, as President, had directed multiple indictments against his likely Democratic opponent who led in the polls both for the nomination and against Trump in the General. It would have been a hysterical Constitutional crisis (and rightly so), but under current circumstances, it's fine.

I am far more concerned with chemicals other than CO2 that are unceasingly pumped into our envoronment in staggering quantities on a daily basis.

Go to your local grocery store and walk down the aisle of cleaning solutions. Look at all of those bottles of blue, purple, yellow, red, and green liquids and envision them all being poured out into the environment, because ultimately, they all will be. Now add up how many other grocery stores with a similar aisle full of chemicals are in your town. Now envision how many similar stores in other towns in your state there are, and how many other states full of grocery store cleaning aisles there are. Now imagine how many there must be around the world, and realize that it's just the household cleaning supplies that we're talking about. Now imagine the sheer quantities of industrial solvents, pharmaceutical waste products, petrochemical agents, plastic processing chemicals, and other chemical agents that are mass-produced for use which find their way into the environment.

Now focus entirely on CO2, because it's that chemical that's killing us, after all.

It's easy:

The inessential qualities that distinguish the races make a racial transition impossible.

The essential qualities that distinguish the sexes make a 'gender' transition simple and straightforward.

Also, up is down, left is right, good is bad, war is peace, freedom is slavery, ignorance is strength.

All that's required is some plain old ordinary doublethink. Once you get it right, your life becomes double-plus good.
