FDR cut Japan off from its oil supply, an act that he knew meant war.

He also fought an undeclared war against Germany in the Atlantic. It was mentioned in the declaration of war.

All so the bankers' investments in Europe could be saved. Germany sure wasn't going to pay back those loans.

The reason he did this was due to Japan's threat to American and Western influence in Asia aswell as Japan's brutality in the chinese war and he had reason to be hostile to Germany and wanting to assist the UK.

Apologia of warmongering. Way to defend the powerful there.

The US was getting involved in the global economy after their success in the first world war, especially in Britain and Western Europe. German dominance of these regions would mean american economic interests would be cut off hence why the US offered the UK material support in the atlantic war. Germany's jingoist outlook under the nazis and their agreement with the Soviets also put the 2 nations on negative terms.

Ah, now you're defending the banks. Go ahead! Try for a three-fer of the intersection of power and oppression! Be the chud whisperer!

Nonsense. More official excuses.

Devil's advocate, by why does America have an obligation to supply any country with oil in war time?

Not that I support either side in the Japan/China conflict (especially as China would go on to become Communist which was far worse), but from a neutrality point of view, America helping Japan violated that.

Because cutting a country off from its energy supply is an act of war. War is bad, mmmkay?

Japan doesn't own America. If they want oil, they could always build their own pumps, or buy it from someone else.

OK now you are just deliberately trolling. Build their own pumps, uh-huh. That would have done it.

So you really believe Japan had rights to America's natural resources? I like Japan but I'm not stupid. Like I said, they should have addressed that problem earlier on, rather than trying to fight a two-front war against both China and the U.S.

Not only did Roosevelt break trade treaties which were mutually beneficial with the Japanese because of his pathetic and misguided affection for the Chinese he collaborated with British and the Dutch and their eastern colonies to do the same. In other words Japan a country reliant on imports to maintain its industrial and war economy was now left with no ther choice than to attack. There was now effectively a total embargo on imports vital for them sustaining their nation. That is an act of war. Plain and simple.

Of course this is exactly what Roosevelt, Stimson and others wanted -- this is all well known now and even mainstream historians acknowledge it -- and its exactly what they got. Your points about 'Why don't they just build their own pumps' and 'well America doesn't have to sell its oil to anyone' are bizarre and totally miss the bigger picture.

I don't deny that Japan wanted their oil. I just deny that they have an inalienable right to it.

Of course any future enemy would use this to their advantage, because it's treated as leverage.
