Japan doesn't own America. If they want oil, they could always build their own pumps, or buy it from someone else.

So you really believe Japan had rights to America's natural resources? I like Japan but I'm not stupid. Like I said, they should have addressed that problem earlier on, rather than trying to fight a two-front war against both China and the U.S.

Not only did Roosevelt break trade treaties which were mutually beneficial with the Japanese because of his pathetic and misguided affection for the Chinese he collaborated with British and the Dutch and their eastern colonies to do the same. In other words Japan a country reliant on imports to maintain its industrial and war economy was now left with no ther choice than to attack. There was now effectively a total embargo on imports vital for them sustaining their nation. That is an act of war. Plain and simple.

Of course this is exactly what Roosevelt, Stimson and others wanted -- this is all well known now and even mainstream historians acknowledge it -- and its exactly what they got. Your points about 'Why don't they just build their own pumps' and 'well America doesn't have to sell its oil to anyone' are bizarre and totally miss the bigger picture.

I don't deny that Japan wanted their oil. I just deny that they have an inalienable right to it.

Of course any future enemy would use this to their advantage, because it's treated as leverage.
