My guess is that those posts are from Eglin, or Tel Aviv.

They've started to make a move. On a positive note, this suggests that Saidit is a credible enough information threat to finally take seriously.

You should start your own sub that is dedicated to crossposting this kind of crap. This would be useful to the community, by creating a community reported log of these shenanigans.

Name the sub, "Tel Aviv to suck my Eglin".

There, I Saidit!

[–]bablarb 11 insightful - 5 fun11 insightful - 4 fun12 insightful - 5 fun -  (5 children)

Very valid point. Lots of other online forums have suffered the same treatment. The attackers usually follow the same script:

1 post something super racist

2 upvote said post to top spot

3 discredit the site by calling them out on racist post - "see this shit they upvote?"

[–]magnora7 8 insightful - 1 fun8 insightful - 0 fun9 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

Yup exactly. Here are some other techniques used to destroy forums: https://cryptome.org/2012/07/gent-forum-spies.htm

The more we're aware of these possibilities, the tougher it is for us to be tricked.

....is anyone getting flashbacks to reddit after reading this shit!

[–]magnora7 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Yeah it's like /r/politics in a nutshell, haha

Good call.

That would be a good idea, I think. If a user can be proven to be maliciously posting disinformation with the intent to destroy or degrade saidit, and also refuses to respond to debates or discussions about the content they are posting, then I am interested in getting rid of them. Saidit is a place for discussion and thoughtfulness, not propaganda and tabloid nonsense. I want to protect this. But the community is going to have to make that happen through their posts and votes, I can't fix it all through admin actions, there's simply far too much information every day to go through by myself. The community has to drive what this site is about at the end of the day, through votes and comments and posts. But if a particularly bad user or group of users can be highlighted and proven to me to be working to attack saidit, I will take action.

[–]Tom_Bombadil 6 insightful - 2 fun6 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 2 fun -  (3 children)

Additionally, Saidit admin should expect significant outside pressure for obvious reasons.
You guys are plenty busy, I'm sure.
Having other responsible community members mod such a sub would provide a layer of separation that may prove useful in the future.

I have another suggestion for the sub name.
American Hasbara

[–]magnora7 5 insightful - 4 fun5 insightful - 3 fun6 insightful - 4 fun -  (0 children)

Additionally, Saidit admin should expect significant outside pressure for obvious reasons.

Oh obviously. We've been dealing with people trying to destroy saidit since day 1. I appreciate the concern, because it is a real issue. I'm glad to see the post and comments here, people wanting to help make saidit better.

Here's a couple ideas for sub names:

SaiditDisinfoWatch

SpotBadActors

[–]JasonCarswell 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

One of these weeks I'm going to create many of the sub titles in this list, so long as I have something to topically post : https://infogalactic.com/info/SaidIt#SaidIt_Subs

In there are a few related to this topic. UK, USA, USEmpire, US+Israel, Zionism, Ziocons, among others. These are not particularly imaginative but aren't meant to be.

For the problem of this discussion I recommend:

InfiltratorWatch

Similar to /s/communismwatch /s/FascismWatch /s/WarWatch

[–]useless_aether 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

yay! :-)

[–]Vigte 5 insightful - 3 fun5 insightful - 2 fun6 insightful - 3 fun -  (14 children)

Yeah and next day the Saidit Canary will disappear - as will you!! lol

Terrible (and great) time to be alive!

[–]Vigte7 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (13 children)

Where did you get your username idea from? And same to /u/Vigte7.

[–]Vigte 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (6 children)

Well obviously Mr "Me+7" is someone trolling me - as for me - it was a choice of name meant to ingratiate me with some people I was trying to investigate and let's leave it at that lol.

[–]wizzwizz4[S] 3 insightful - 3 fun3 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 3 fun -  (5 children)

Yeah. Two posts only; obviously a troll. :-)

It's prolly the same chucklehead who doubles ad Froglich.

Thanks. ;-).

What about the sub name??? I like the idea of these turds automatically getting that x-post message.

It may not be very funny if English is a person's seconds language. It needs to be said out loud.

[–]Mnemonic 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

Shilling is too specific, it's 'marketing' something (like the coolest sub around: /s/Internet).

Dumping toxicity deliberately to give someone/thing a bad reputation is a broader phenomenon than just 'shill' stuff.

[–]Tom_Bombadil 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

Sounds too much like anti-Hillary.

[–]Tom_Bombadil 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (10 children)

That's fine by me. Remember the Reddit paid takeover from the elect Hillary shills. 90% Bernie to 80% Hillary overnight.

[–]JasonCarswell 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (9 children)

True.

Hillary's corrupt as fuuuuuuck. Bernie's a coward when it counts.

Let's say we run them both again to keep out any legit leadership.

[–]Tom_Bombadil 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (8 children)

Bernie did better than he imagined in his wildest dreams. He didn't want to commit Arkancide (2 shot gun blasts). His stepping aside was prearranged.

[–]JasonCarswell 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (7 children)

Obviously I don't want anything bad to happen to Bernie, but if he were to mysteriously suicide himself in handcuffs with to shots to the back of the head - I'm quite sure that might wake some folks up. His martyrdom would have done more for all his causes. He's already an old fart. What's he gonna do with a couple decades if he's lucky that he couldn't do while resisting the corruption.

FUCK BERNIE He should have thrown himself on the grenade. Millions of others have for much much much less.

[–]wizzwizz4[S] 11 insightful - 2 fun11 insightful - 1 fun12 insightful - 2 fun -  (16 children)

I mean, just look at this:

Adverse Reaction to Islamic Call to Prayer in Brooklyn - This lady has every right to condemn the racket, the Koran which is the basis of Islam says prayers should be "within yourself without being apparent in speech at both ends of the day," as well it says "hurl truth at falsehood" .. Jews did 911

"Jews did 911" wasn't even in the article! And the OP's comment is randomly interspersed with arbitrary claims that are barely related to the rest of the subject matter. It looks like SEO spam.

Two people marked the post as "insightful".

[–]magnora7 10 insightful - 2 fun10 insightful - 1 fun11 insightful - 2 fun -  (12 children)

As saidit admin I just want to say that I agree with you here. But what do you think the reaction should be?

I, as an admin, can delete it. But a key part of saidit that's different from reddit is that we don't have admins and mods going around deleting things arbitrarily. I could make an argument about deleting it due to the low quality of the information, but I've never deleted anything for that reason before nor do I really want to start. Then I have to make decisions myself constantly about what is "good information" and what is "low quality".

The main solution is for other people to post and upvote better quality information. The fact it only got 2 insightful votes is a good thing, it was basically ignored.

[–]Tom_Bombadil 4 insightful - 3 fun4 insightful - 2 fun5 insightful - 3 fun -  (2 children)

I have a sub suggestion below to allow the community to police it's self.

Decentralized community shaming.

Tel Aviv to suck my Eglin

[–]happysmash27 4 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

That's called the downvote, and it didn't work very well on Reddit; shaming is a terrible rhetorical tactic.

I suggest that more people go into the comments to politely explain and debate flaws. The nice thing about SaidIt is that you tend not to be banned for doing that.

Edit: I just read your comment below, and now realise I misread what you are saying.

[–]Tom_Bombadil 4 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

It's not downvoting. Maybe an American Hasbara AH tag next to the comment that notifies the American Hasbara mods to look into the claim.
It also warns the reader that the info may be suspect.
It would also identify fraudulent posts that Shills are boosting up the list.

[–]wizzwizz4[S] 4 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 2 fun -  (8 children)

Could you add a kind of "trash" (functionally downvote) button, hidden away in the "report" section? One that had transparency of use. That way, the community can delete it, and if people are misusing this then the policy can be reviewed.

I don't know, though; this is a really, really tricky problem.

[–]magnora7 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (7 children)

Interesting idea, I'll consider it.

I don't know, though; this is a really, really tricky problem.

It honestly is. I think it's the problem of the decade, as far as the internet is concerned. I bet books had a similar problem when the printing press was invented. So much propaganda masquerading as real information, and so hard to tell what is what.

[–]For_Freedom 4 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 2 fun -  (6 children)

How about a button so we can ignore these ignorant racists and their submissions ?

[–]wizzwizz4[S] 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

I don't think that would be a good idea, because then we would be living in a small fortress inside a wider, manipulated Saidit.

If we can't ignore the people attacking the site, we're forced to confront them. I think having a way of visually distinguishing the "ignored" stuff is good, though, so we can manually ignore it.

/u/magnora7

[–]magnora7 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (3 children)

I think having a way of visually distinguishing the "ignored" stuff is good, though, so we can manually ignore it.

Not a bad idea. I'll have to think about the details of that one.

[–]wizzwizz4[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

Still thinking? Should I make a post on /s/IdeasForSaidit?

[–]magnora7 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

On reflection, I don't think many people would use that feature. I could be wrong though, feel free to post it up to saiditideas and see what others think?

[–]wizzwizz4[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Posted. https://saidit.net/eqn/

Also, https://saidit.net/ciz is an example of people wanting the feature.

[–]magnora7 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

We might add an ignore button, you're the 2nd to suggest it in the last few days.

[–]JasonCarswell 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

I've seen that too, elsewhere. I avoid the clickbait and now ignore this crap as I have no time for it.

I recommend putting them on probation for spam.

[–]wizzwizz4[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

The consensus seems to be to do so, so this action won't be "dictatorial admins manipulating Saidit" if it happens.

[–]JasonCarswell 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Probation isn't banning. It's a warning. After enough warnings it's time to drop the hammer.

[–]wizzwizz4[S] 10 insightful - 2 fun10 insightful - 1 fun11 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

Also on /s/MartinTimothy, and currently on the top of the front page with 12 insightfuls:

Oberlin College Ohio Dismisses Professor Joy Karega For AntiSemitic Statements - Re her assertion on social media platforms that "ISIS is really an arm of Israeli and US intelligence agencies, Israel was behind the Charlie Hebdo massacre in Paris and that Zionist Jews were behind the 911 attacks

… linking to an article in which the professor claims that those assertions were taken out of context, so shouldn't really be attributed to her. Below which the OP links three relevant other articles, along with a "quotation" from the OP written as such to give it false authority.

This behaviour is stunning.

It exploits the fact that most people don't click to read the comments before voting, whereas those who do assume that the OP's (top) comment is supported by all of those votes. Pretty shady behaviour.

[–]JasonCarswell 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

This is why I want a site-wide CSS to increase the size and visibility of the votes (and maybe the time and/or reply buttons too).

[–][deleted] 10 insightful - 2 fun10 insightful - 1 fun11 insightful - 2 fun -  (2 children)

The SaidIt policy prohibits repeated and intentional ad hominem attacks and name calling. If you see those feel free to report them. To report to admins instead of mods, send a message to /s/SaidIt

[–]wizzwizz4[S] 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

This should probably be pinned.

[–]JasonCarswell 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

At the foot of every page under "help".

[–]magnora7 9 insightful - 1 fun9 insightful - 0 fun10 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

Another suggestion is to browse the "new" tab to get the freshest content, and upvote good stuff early. This helps interesting content make it to the top of the front page.

[–]happysmash27 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

Plus, if you browse SaidIt enough that it's hard to find new content, it allows for you to take in everything.

[–]Vigte 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

That will change as it grows - and as dedicated posters post good contetnt. It can eventually contain the same quality information places like Reddit have - but without all the fluff and trash (and farming).

[–]wizzwizz4[S] 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Fingers crossed!

Actually, no fingers crossed. We need to work for that.

[–]Alduin 9 insightful - 1 fun9 insightful - 0 fun10 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

It's an intelligence/law enforcement agency tactic (not that it's necessarily them doing it). They basically flood a forum with undesirable content until the only real people left are people who agree with them (honeypot).

What I would suggest is a "block" or "ignore" button that works. If I have a user blocked, all of their content should be hidden from me. Then the racists and feds can go do their thing together and the rest of us can ignore them.

But first things first: Know thy enemy.

https://cryptome.org/2012/07/gent-forum-spies.htm

[–]wizzwizz4[S] 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

The trouble with that, however, is that new readers will still be biased in that way and we'll gain more undesirable new users than the other end of undesirable and the entire site will slowly shift its culture in one direction anyway.

[–]Alduin 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

So you're saying all the racism spam will still show up to new users, so only racist spammers will sign up for an account?

That might be true... It's a hypothetical though, and this problem goes a little further. Voat is a good example of what happens. I would say it's been one of the most successful attacks I've seen. What happens now if you get an account and say something that goes against the narrative, or even just say something that's normal and unrelated, you won't find a receptive audience. So there's NOTHING BUT racism and hate there.

I don't mind racism and hate. In fact I think those kinds of discussions are necessary. But what I do mind is when there's NOTHING BUT racism and hate.

Keep in mind the people who talk like that are probably less than 10% of people (and I think that's being generous). Most people who come here will be normal. Not Reddit normal (which has the same problem at the opposite end of the spectrum), but normal.

[–]SundogsPlace 8 insightful - 1 fun8 insightful - 0 fun9 insightful - 1 fun -  (5 children)

censorship doesn't work. In my opinion, what does work, most of us learned from an early age. It goes like this, 'sticks, and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.'

I'm not being a smart ass in posting that, but the fact is, everyone has an opinion, just like another stinky part of the human anatomy.... We don't like the smell, but not too many complain....

To be afraid of words, begs the question of what directed agenda is fomenting the fear, who stands to gain, and who can you simply not talk about? Unfortunately, in our modern world of crazy, sometimes you gotta take a guess, or more appropriately, if it looks like a duck, talks like a duck, then it's a duck.

Ignorance already rules the day, why pander to it?

Just my 2 cents

[–]magnora7 6 insightful - 2 fun6 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 2 fun -  (3 children)

I agree.

However if one person makes 50 accounts and just posts garbage to the front page 500 times a day, drowning out all the other posts... is that free speech? No, that is someone trying to destroy the forum. They are trying to drown out legitimate conversation, and are thus encroaching on the free speech of others and trying to silence them!

What do you think should be done in this situation? Just let someone spam so much nonsense until this forum is worthless?

[–]SundogsPlace 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

I think for just about any given situation, potential problems wait. If there are those who want to cause issues, then they usually have a decent chance, short of just getting bored.

As far as posting, and quality of posts, that's a possible issue right there. For example, I like reading current events, sometimes I hunt down really off the wall weird stuff, and why, I don't know. I like sharing what I read, and post it here, or on Facebook. I usually try to write out a decent comment, but where I fail, is in further discussion. It's not so a real mystery to me, but just falls into the line of not really that talkative. So, in a given day, I can post up usually between 5, and 8 topics.

If we're worried about a front page, and what people see, it may need for that page to have tighter controls; perhaps even manually elevated topics for discussion.

I'm not really sure, but I do know, the enemy usually uses rules against others, and if they're aren't any rules, then they give reason to.

[–]wizzwizz4[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

perhaps even manually evevated topics for discussion

This is arguably worse than establishing rules to prevent this, because at least you can try to use the rules against the hypothetical Evil Magnora7.

The pen is mightier than the sword.

Propaganda is mind control. You don't need a gun if you can rile up a mob with guns. You don't need the truth when you can tax nations to fund profitable wars.

[–]Mnemonic 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

The best way to 'go around' this is filtering your subscription list at https://saidit.net/subs and when you see it happen in broader category subs and You have the time, refute it.

Keeping the https://saidit.net/static/debatepyramid.jpg in mind, if you can't get further than a contradiction it's probably 'wasted time' anyway in these cases.

Keep it up!

We've thought about making this the home page like reddit does, but we don't want people to miss out on content

[–]Tom_Bombadil 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Good call. That's basically censorship by omission.

[–]wizzwizz4[S] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

That's probably not quite the best way; the best way would be to call them out on it. But whatever keeps you from accidentally upvoting it.

[–]wizzwizz4[S] 6 insightful - 2 fun6 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

I don't mind this kind of thing so much, despite disagreeing strongly with it, because at least it makes claims that those who disagree can refute.

[–]solder0 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

Saidit is more resistant, but not immune. Anything even remotely resembling reddit is going to have this problem.

[–]magnora7 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

You are correct, and in my experience the best "immune system" is a strong community.

[–]FormosaOolong 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Indeed. But as the community and its presence grows, the chicanery inevitably begins in earnest.

[–]JasonCarswell 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Indeed. I earnestly implore you to listen to these:

It's not fake news. The whole point is to prevent that sort of thing, without having to resort to authoriarianism and the pushing of narratives. If Saidit dies, we've lost something special.

It is fake news. Your point is to prevent free speech you lying mudduck plebbit shill.

The only way saidit will die is if it becomes infested with sjw propaganda and censorship happy mods and admins

That is one way that it could die, yes.

It's far from the only one, though. The server could be hit by an asteroid, for instance, and the backups destroyed in a fire.

Anti semitic, how so. Point to posts that are what you say they are. Would you be refering to my post about the jesuits?

    [–]wizzwizz4[S] 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (5 children)

I'm referring to stuff written like this:

Jews did 9/11. [Claims] [Claims] [Link that doesn't back up claims] [More claims] Proof: [Yet more claims] Therefore, we should hate all Jews.

While I don't agree with your Jesuit post, at least you're not trying to manipulate the masses by writing stuff that seems to be evidence but isn't.

    [–]Jesus 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

Jews didn't but many evil people did who happen to call themselves Jews. People conflate Jews as a whole. And that they act as a collective, which is wrong on many levels. Most Jews are innocent and when I see people claim that JEWS did 9/11 it seems like a PSYOP to thwart any blame on the real players, whether the majority were Zionist Jews, Israelis, Catholics, Atheists, etc,. We know the beneficiaries of 9/11, we can name them and not generalize an entire population of people as if they are also guilty.

Apart from the specifics about 9/11 (which I don't think was a conspiracy, but I don't know enough to claim to really know), I agree wholeheartedly with this post. It's a common, or at least plausible, tactic: blame a big group of people, then claim that "specific subgroup B didn't do it, therefore nobody in the group did anything".

For added points, blame a group of people that barely intersects with the actually responsible group, then get the discussion tied up over which subset of your blamed group was actually responsible.

If you believe the offical narrative it is still by definition a CONSPIRACY.

    Fair point.
