I’m a lawyer. I like a lot of aspects of being a lawyer and how it helps me shape the way I think about, understand, and influence the world. But coming from a lower socioeconomic status, I knew that certain paths would be closed off to me. I was able to lift myself out by becoming a lawyer, but my greater passion would be as a historian. I’ve thought about making that my second career but I fear I’m still a long way off and I don’t know that it would even be possible at this point for all the same reasons as before.

Hahahaha I am just an utter nerd and I also prefer to be behind the scenes, being the brain not the face of an operation.

IRL though I don't really look like or seem to act like a brainy nerd when people first meet me because I'm a very silly, downright ridiculous, and also adventurous human being. Pretty much everything about me seems like a contradiction. I do tend to thrive on being underestimated though, so that's good.

That's awesome you were able to lift yourself out, congrats dude.

edit: Also, I am unsurprised you are a lawyer, your writing/argument skills are impressive. Checks out lol.

LOL yes you've been paying attention. I can't hide when I reflexively put things in bullet points and also number lists I've written within paragraphs. I just naturally over-analyze everything to death and love breaking down and building arguments, figuring out the inner logic in everything, stress-testing theories, categorizing things, and constructing narratives. I'd rather get things right than be right.

You sound like you could be a great historian too. It's never too late!

Hey, I'm with you on organization! It really helps get the message across.

I enjoy being right and getting things right, to only a limited degree each :P

It is really interesting to put together a coherent picture of a pattern in a topic, though. Often the implications or language a person is using give the biggest hints as to what is really going on.

I actually predicted I'd work for the company I work for while in undergrad.

If I had the freedom to do anything? Hmm maybe run an animal sanctuary or open a lesbian cafe where I would cook amazing dishes.

Lesbian cafe would be the coolest thing ever!!

I'm a software dev. If I had the freedom, I'd probably quit my job and work on improving my web design skills, then open my own web design company. As it is, I work on back end 90% of the time. Which I like a lot, but since we're speaking of very idealized scenarios here...

Initially I wanted to work in academia, but after I saw what state it is in I changed my mind.

I inherited my profession, wouldn’t do anything else. If I had to do something else it would be awesome to do something with explosives and demolitions.

        Beekeeper and translator.

Dream job: acting. It allows you to embody and learn from the lives of so many different people. I would love doing the background work for a character: learn everything about a time period, accents, body movement, professions. Getting to a point where you can improvise in character would be almost like time travel.

With bee keeping how often do you need to visit your hives and how long does it take? The only reason I’m asking is because someone is trying to lease a small plot from me for next year to place several of them. Before I say yes I would like to know how often I would have to see them.

        [–]Innisfree 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Assuming he won't have more than say 10 hives, he'll have to check on them every other weekend as soon as winter is over. As soon as the flowering season begins and they start gathering pollen it's every weekend. June-July is a very busy beacause they are reproducing very quickly and you may even need to call him if a family leaves the hive and settles on a neighbouring tree lol. Then from August to November it's every other weekend again - it's about making sure they have enough to eat, are healthy and prepping them for the winter. But it really depends how many hives he will have and if it's hobby or part-time job for him. This is the minimum amount of visits required, but if he lives nearby you may see him more often. DM me if more details are needed.

Research assistant, not a job I actually want, but it's nothing more than a stepping stone for me, acquire some real life work experience before I move on academically. I wanted to become a teacher when I was younger but I'm so utterly terrible at teaching and explaining that it's not something I could actually pursue, not that I actually mind since I'm pretty satisified with my current plans.

If I could or rather if I had to choose anything, anything at all that can't be related to what I'm currently pursuing... explorer/tomb raider (ok - that last part sounds a bit, immoral)... the type of person that goes on expiditions or tries to find hidden treasures. The search for the Incan city of Paititi continues into the 21st centuryt, and there are those that dive for treasures that was supposed to be carried from Mesoamerica to Europe during the colonization/conquest/occupation/whatever word you'd like to use of the Americas, but sunk to the bottom of the oceans instead.

I work in HR. I don't hate the position and for me that's saying a lot - I've worked many jobs in my life that I have absolutely despised. This job provides a nice little career path and a comfortable living wage.

I never really thought I'd end up in HR. I was very idealistic right out of high school and spent many years in the social service field (I don't recommend it, ladies), and I'm also of the generation that was sort of raised to fear the boring, soul-sucking office jobs of our parents. It was all 'follow your dreams' and 'do what you love'. However, I've found that good health insurance and a 401k has provided a sense of security and vastly reduced general life stress, which also allows me to pursue my dreams and do what I love as hobbies.

My dream job is Indiana Jones. However, I realized early on that pursuing a career as an archaeologist or anthropologist was not an optimistic one, and spending a whole lot of money to follow the path of getting an advanced degree to be a professional historian or archivist to make a ~$50k salary while paying back a hundred thousand dollars in student loans didn't make a lot of sense.

If I could do it over, I think I would have joined the military and become a helicopter pilot, and carried that skill over into civilian life.

I wanted to be a doctor or something tied with engineering, as I used for it since childhood. Right now I am working as software engineer, but something like foreman (or forewoman, hehe) - most qualified worker in group, who commands less qualified, but works with them. It was actually tought to get a job as software engineer at first, gladly current boss was checking for skills and not following stereotypes (as I was rejected a lot of times for being a woman). And I am on duty here as well with regular engineering stuff (double pay and +1 vacation day per call, as it can happen at night too, and I need to get there and fix). And there no management above me as well. I think I have third biggest income in my company (but a lot of work).

If I'd to change my occupation, I'd love to make games, especially as director, so there could finally appear some good lesbian games, ffs. Or just get a lot of money and "work" on my future wife :)

If you ever go into games, PLEASE let us know, you are right we are sorely lacking representation there.

Got a favorite video game, whether relevant to lesbians or not?

          [–]VioletRemi 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

That would not happen in closest years, as I have other stuff to do first.

My most favourite will be Hollow Knight or Portal 2 I think. Sadly, but there are so few lesbian games (without sexualization).

          [–]reluctant_commenter 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Ahhhh, Hollow Knight looks so beautiful!! It is on my bucket list.

Very true, I love Life is Strange for example but it is more of a bisexual game than a lesbian game I think, or I guess it kinda depends on how you play it.

          [–]VioletRemi 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Sadly that in Tomb Rider reboot developers were afraid to made her lesbian with Sam in the very end, as most of the game was going to that conclusion.

I'm an architect and masterplanner, just starting my career. I honestly didn't think I'd end up here, I thought I'd probably be a doctor but I think I made the right choice. Um... If I had the financial stability I would probably choose graphic design but I think I can still pursue that too, who knows what the future holds.

Oncology registered nurse. I was pursuing archeology but realized that it would be difficult to make a living if I followed through. I think in a lot of ways nursing is a good fit for my personality but damn is it hard most days. Dream job would be working remote and living in a cabin.

Don't want to dox myself, but I am in a profession that involves a lot of reading, writing and math. It is just what I wanted to do when I was younger and I am really lucky I ended up here :)

Wanted to be a writer since I was 8, I'm 16 now and still plan on publishing a book of poetry at some point, but I'm wise to the fact that I'd have to be the big cheese to make a living on that alone. I want to help people so I've decided to study to be a nurse, since I've been fascinated by medicine since first watching House

I think you'd be great at writing. And may I just say a huge thank you for your writing prompts, i.e. threads you are starting here. They are great and you are getting us to write and keeping this sub active :)

If I had financial freedom I would never work again since I don't dream of any labor, I hate it all.

What I would do is activism for feminism, lesbians and most importantly animal rights. And documentaries/TV shows I would fund the production of things I like.

I'm a student rn but I think I want to study to be a music therapist. I know that I'd like to do something creative but I might change my mind.

If I could do anything I wanted I'd be a stay at home mum, I know a lot of people ridicule the idea or say its not a profession or they say I'm much to young to be thinking about having kids in the future, but that's what I want to do. Its irrelevant though since I'd never be able to afford it...

Have you by any chance read "Sing You Home" by Judi Picoult? It's about a music therapist who falls in love with a lesbian teacher and her desire to have a baby. It is a true homage to this wonderful profession!
