You don’t need to reason with them. I don’t need science or anything else to explain or justify that only females turn me on.

There are people constantly trying undermine lesbians due to misogyny and homophobia.

You don't need to argue with random people about your sexual orientation. Especially someone who won't accept even just the existance of homosexuality without scientific proof that homosexuality fulfills some biological function.

You also might need to consider that maybe no one is going to find a 'scientific basis' of these sorts of things. Science is a good hammer, but it doesn't mean everything else is a nail.

That's a non-starter. Why should it need to serve a biological function. Oh, you mean for those who see evolution as something different than gravity: not just an observed effect but some holy god-replacing belief system. Yeah, genetic drift as an idol makes people say strange things.

I'd simply say "lesbians are not and have never been attracted to males nor male anatomy nor surgically altered male anatomy." mic drop

I, too, like truisms. Or is it more definition changing going on. Wait, don't answer that. I try to stay away from that stuff.

They don’t really study women. Most sexuality research is focused on men. And “phallometric” studies where they measure boner response in men don’t work well on women, for obvious reasons. We have different genitals and different biological roles, and different protective response than men would.

Most sexuality related research that studies women is survey based so that isn’t particularly helpful either.

I’ve seen studies saying more lesbians have a longer ring finger than index finger than straight women (whose index and ring finger are typically same length). My index fingers are noticeably shorter than my ring finger, and I’ve known other lesbians with the same thing. Gay men’s finger ratios are supposed to be similar to straight women. I haven’t seen that study in a long time and it could be bullshit. Lol. I thought it was funny years ago.

That big “no women are straight” fluidity study actually found homosexuals and heterosexuals to be the most stable orientation and the bisexuals to be “fluid” but of course it was nor reported that way.

Yeah TBH in recent times there's been a lot of blatant lying and misreporting going on in academia especially the social sciences and sexuality studies. Add in like you said women arent studied nearly as much as men are and you get bullshit like what this teacher said

When males are used as the measure of things, data for women is usually off in some way.

There's actually a whole book written about that very concept called Invisible Women by Caroline Criado Perez. I highly recommend it.

I learned about the data bias in medicine when I was reading about research ethics and methodology etc. It’s a real thing, and it’s everywhere. I should read that book

My ring fingers are longer too, that's related to testosterone in the womb. We simply got hit with more testosterone than normal, which made our brain works similar to an het male.

          [–][deleted] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (8 children)

That’s what I heard. It would sort of make sense if it were true. My ring fingers are WAY longer. I am so attracted to women I am like a “horny guy” stereotype. Even today, a woman walked past me and I had to clench my teeth and hands to keep from turning all the way around to look at her ass. I could tell it was going to be really nice from her front, but a lady was walking toward me and would have seen me check that woman out. Lololol. One time a straight guy checked out the same woman as me and then gave me a head nod and I was super ashamed. Lol. I wonder if it causes the gay.

Yeah, both my ring fingers are longer. And my sexual desire is big too. Ahh, testosterone LMAO

The rest of my body is VERY “feminine” though, a stereotype hourglass. And my face is stereotypically unambiguously feminine too. Maybe the testosterone exposure mostly affects the brain itself

I'm regularly looking and only attracted to feminine women, also feel sexually dominant. Testosterone hit me harder,I guess.

In term of sexuality, we definitely are like men. Our brain is attracted to the same thing. The finger ratio is established to being related to testosterone, that doesn't mean every lesbian or hetero man has it, it is just that testosterone tend to grow that finger. https://www.newscientist.com/article/dn14146-gay-brains-structured-like-those-of-the-opposite-sex/

But the different in size was structural. And that was related to another study with rats, where basically the rats whose embryonic brain was exposed to more testosterone developed a bigger part than one who weren't and were sexually attracted to female.

But rats are used a lot for studying humans. And surely the fact that the same structure caused by testosterone exposure in womb was found in us, it isn't coincidence. Also, structure cannot being influence by social pressure. It doesn't make any sense. It is the structure of the brain.

I am pretty dominant as well. I used to try to suppress it but I just want what I want and I want it now. Lololol. Women seem to actually be into it with me so I have been very lucky.

Tell them that you know there are people out there who are truly homosexual because you are one of them, and you know others like you. Tell her them that science can't read minds yet, so there's no science out there to completely prove or disprove the existence of female homosexuality. Tell them to listen to lesbians for a change.

not much scientific evidence for lesbians

I mean there's an entire species of all female homosexual lizards

There's also a type of albatross that sees a lot of female pair bonds and even raising young together. To be fair it's thought to mainly occur due to a skewed sex ratio, but it's still pretty cool.

The person who coined the term "sexual fluidity" found that it was only fluid for bisexuals and no one in her study changed sexual orientation. It's mostly nonsense like a lot of queer theory.

                  [–]LesbiSilly 9 insightful - 2 fun9 insightful - 1 fun10 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

My best argument is, if sexuality is fluid, then conversion therapy should 'work'. (And hence many people would not be LGB).

But it doesn't work, so sexuality is not fluid.

                  [–]EzukiRaen 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

I'm vaguely familiar with what you're talking about.

I remember a few years ago there was a study that came out about how different people reacted to sexual stimuli. If I remember correctly, essentially what they found is that men were only stimulated by what they were attracted to i.e. straight men were stimulated by things involving women, gay men were stimulated by things involving men. They also found that (most) women, regardless of their orientation, were stimulated by (for the most part) anything sexual (keep in mind that this included both straight women and lesbians).

I wonder if this could be the study that your teacher was refering to. If it was then, I think it would be a bit of a leap to come to the conclusion that lesbians don't exist.

First, if you think of it from a historical context, women were once treated as lesser than men and it was socially acceptable to take advantage of them. So, I think it's worth considering that perhaps women evolved to be more easily stimulated in response to being raped.

Second, as I said, the study concluded that women as a whole were stimulated by sexual stimuli regardless of the content of the stimuli/one's orientation. If we were to jump to the conclusion that "sexual orientation in women is fluid" and/or "lesbians don't exist" then that would mean straight women would also have to be sexually fluid and non-existent, which we know to be factually incorrect.

The only real way to understand exactly how all of this works would be for more studies to be done but, as someone else said, more studies have been done on gay men than lesbians.

Tl;dr: To answer your question, if you really want to argue with people, ask them "there is no 'gay gene' and there is no 'straight gene'. DNA is not able to predict someone's sexuality." Fight "science" with science.

Side note: I just realized that this makes it even more baffling that your biology teacher, of all people, made such questionable and misleading statements.

                  [–]SaidOverRed 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Do you remember when 'born this way' was a reason why gay men screamed homophobia and insisted they'd find a gay gene? Pepperidge Farm remembers...

                  [–]MyLongestJourney 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I actually had my high school biology teacher say that there have been studies explaining why gay men exist, but there is not much scientific evidence for lesbians.

Because barely anyone though of us as an interesting subject.

I don’t think it’s worth debating with homophobes anymore, but I’m just tired too. I would suggest not debating with them if you don’t have to.

                  [–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

The earth still revolved around the sun even before science discovered this fact.

Also, the idea of sexuality being fluid, is weirdly only used against gay people. Why is that? Why aren't straight people expected to be fluid?
