Canadian, 21. I wasn't planning to come out until I was in a serious relationship. My parents found out a few months ago (currently living at home) after finding a copy of LC. It was awkward for a few days but otherwise we don't discuss it and it's mostly fine.

I think everyone suspected when I got a really short (and terrible) haircut at 15 and started wearing flannel. Ironically, I hadn't figured it out at that point and was confused by the reactions (and hurt, bc some people got really weird about it).

Now, the extended family? That's a whole other thing that I'm not looking forward to dealing with when the time comes.

Bad: Math and art. I've grown to like linear algebra though.

Students: How are you doing? by [deleted] in Lesbians

[–]plotbunny 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I'm lucky and the only change has been having all classes online for the year, which isn't great but could be worse.

It's disappointing because a lot of my courses have labs or group work, and it's usually easier to meet new people in those classes. I miss the daily social interactions. I'm doing my thesis this year so that's a bit stressful, but the format lends itself well to being done online (no fieldwork needed, etc).

My biggest concern is outbreaks off campus. A lot of students moved back even though school is online, and there will be parties. Hoping we don't have a lockdown.

Do you come out to acquaintances/friends or just let them assume you're straight unless there's a good reason to correct them? by RedditHatesLesbians in Lesbians

[–]plotbunny 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I also do the 'assumed straight' thing. I'm not sure there's a good answer. Sometimes I wish I was more openly out, but I don't want to make that my only personality trait. The downside is it's really easy to just not tell people because most won't ask.

A lot of my friends are bi so acceptance hasn't been a big issue. People do treat you differently, but I'm also a lot more relaxed around people who know so that may be why.

Exclusively homosexual animals? by RedditHatesLesbians in Lesbians

[–]plotbunny 10 insightful - 3 fun10 insightful - 2 fun11 insightful - 3 fun -  (0 children)

Ooh I can sort of answer this!

So first up: homosexual behaviour is the only thing that can technically be measured, since asking animals about their sexual attraction doesn't usually work very well.

It gets harder when species are more similar between the sexes and less obviously dimorphic (eg roosters vs chickens, etc) because then seeing if a mate is male or female is less obvious, and nobody really wants to supervise that closely.

Also in lab conditions behaviours can change vs wild conditions and may not be considered 'normal'.

It's also usually explained as confusion on the animal's part, or a lack of choice if sex ratios are skewed, or as a non-sexual behaviour altogether (some males use it as a dominance thing). Also, science seems to not like the idea very much (but that's just my interpretation).

All that to say that I don't personally know of any exclusively homosexual animals and it would also be hard for a species to survive if they truly were exclusively homosexual (unless only some individuals of that species were, like humans- but again, hard to measure).

This was super long, apologies for that. Check out Laysan albatrosses, they're pretty cool (or just google lesbian albatrosses, same result).

[–]plotbunny 9 insightful - 1 fun9 insightful - 0 fun10 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Left-wingers tend to be pretty vocal about their political standpoints. Might have better luck with lesbians who don't shout about it from the rooftops.

Also, if they're rational people, having different opinions and perspectives is respected. But that's not always the case.

Currently working on Hebrew since I've been to Israel and have plans to go back hopefully soon. It's going ok, but definitely the hardest language to pick up so far.

Femme, butch or something else? by [deleted] in Lesbians

[–]plotbunny 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I don't really identify as anything, but others would consider me femme. Nobody thinks I'm a lesbian, but there are some 'tells' if you know what to look for.

It's so frustrating because I can feel how differently I'm treated if I wear makeup, heels, dresses, etc. People are nicer and more helpful but men are also so much creepier. Back when I had my hair really short people were more passive aggressive if not outright rude.

I've actually had better luck meeting people irl, but most were total flukes so that doesn't really help. Apps suck and it always ends up being the same people. If nobody wants to make an effort to meet up after chatting then it usually fizzles out (and if you don't live in the same city, well, good luck).

There was a thread on TrueLesbians like a year ago, basically seeing if anyone was in the same city. Might be time to start another one?

[–]plotbunny 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Yeah, I had a few years as a teen where I used asexual to describe myself. I had a lot of internalized homophobia and it was easier to say I didn't like anyone. Didn't really help that nobody I knew ID'd as a lesbian and a few of my crushes transitioned- had me questioning for a while where I fit in. Went through a bunch of identities while trying to ignore the obvious.

Now it's better and worse in that a bunch of people came out right after high school, but they're all woke. The few lesbians I have met have been pretty cool, and it feels so good to no longer be hiding part of myself. But it took a while to get here.
