Yes. I took my children out of the government's public schools and home-schooled them. But the government still requires I pay over $2,000 per year in property taxes, with the bulk of it going to the public schools. It's not taught now, for that reason.

But Twain was very much not a racist. The racism of his characters that use the word is meant to be judged by the reader, and is starkly displayed.

Just two observations:

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a non-racist piece of fiction that was quite progressive for its day. We didn't start panicking over the non-racist use of the word "nigger," claiming that the word itself was inherently racist irrespective of context, until perhaps fifteen years ago.
It seems abundantly clear to me that John Freshwater was fired for preaching religious beliefs to his classes, not for "having a Holy Bible on his desk." Fox wants to keep telling you he had a Bible on his desk, but nothing in the article connects that fact to his dismissal.
