Everyone else will do whatever he or she pleases, including flying private, commuting by limo, and flying innumerable vehicles from Oklahoma to Hawaii on private planes for a pointlessly long and pointlessly uniform-looking motorcade. https://saidit.net/s/WayOfTheBern/comments/bd2t/george_bush_was_mauled_for_merely_flying_over_new/13pdf

Just like Cenk, Chomsky, Sanders and the rest.

Democrats are terrible, terrible, terrible, right up until they have a nominee. Then, it's OMG, vote Dem or we're all going to die...and horribly to boot. (an exaggeration, but not by much).

As much as Hartmann touted Sanders in the 2016 primary, he touted Hillary for the 2016 general.

Democrats can't have it both ways.

They claim that a vote for the candidate of a newer party is a vote for the Republican nominee. So, no vote has been suppressed!

Also, isn't it amusing that the Party that takes the most votes from Democrats is not the struggling Green Party, but the thriving Republican Party. So, why focus on the Greens, who've been getting fewer and fewer Presidential votes?

And here's a totally radical thought--How about politicians doing their job and representing most Americans, instead of only those who have (generous) lobbyists?

Yes, you do wake up bit by bit.

Final straw for me?

A Democrat in the White House, an overwhelming majority in the US House and 60 Senators in the Dem Caucus (a filibuster proof majority) in the US Senate.

Please don't count the days there were 60 Senators.

First, everyone has a different count.

Second, Democrats knew well before the election that Ted Kennedy was dying and his hand picked successor took his place anyway.

Third, a bill can be passed in few days. https://old.reddit.com/r/WayOfTheBern/comments/v6sw1a/how_long_does_it_take_to_write_a_federal_bill_or/

Fourth, there were almost three months between election day and Inauguration Day. A bill could have been ready for a vote and Obama's signature if anyone actually wanted one passed.

Fifth, if we're talking only Obamacare, Conyers had been submitting a Medicare for All bill every session. Pelosi ensured that every one of them died in committee.

Sixth, I'm tired of excuses for acts and inactions of politicians that disadvantage most Americans, so just shut up.

On edit.Despite all the above, I was a nearly rabid supporter of Sanders during the 2016 primary season because I fell for the (I) and therefore did not see him as a Democrat. Well played, Senator.

It was her turn in 2008. However, Dem Party leadership--Reid and Kennedy--among others, had correctly decided that she had too much baggage to win a general. So, with media help, they groomed Obama for several years, going public with him as the keynote speaker at the 2004 Democrat National Convention that nominated Kerry.

Meanwhile, Hillary acquired more baggage, including her "racially charged" primary campaign against the first person of color (that we know of for certain) to have a shot at the Presidential nomination of either the Democrat or Republican Parties.

Years before Hillary's nom, rank and file Democrats warned that she could not win a general, especially after the "Ready for Hillary" crap started. But, despite all the above, Hillary, Obama, Debbie Whatshername Schultz and the DNC forged ahead.

Wasn't Biden's good friend, Strom Thurmond, a Senator until he was 99 or 100?

The difference: Strom was only one Senator out of 100, while we have only one POTUS. Another difference, Strom was not CIC and couldn't start a war. (Please don't tell me that the POTUS cannot do that without a vote of Congress. The Constitution is one thing, actual events are another.) Another difference: Strom didn't meet one on one with other heads of state and on and on.

Not that I am in favor superannuated Senators. I'm just pointing out that it's not an apples to apples comparison. There is none. POTUS is sui generis, even among heads of state. And I'm an equal opportunity dunker. Shame on Biden, McConnell, Thurmond, Reagan and all who prop them up in order to be the "power behind the throne."

UAW strike scrambles political allegiances by RandomCollection in WayOfTheBern

[–]risi 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Article is full of bs.

Democrats were the pro-slavery party; the Republicans were abolitionists. After slavery was outlawed Republicans went to bankers and Democrats could not win Presidential elections. While they went Jim Crow in the South, they courted immigrants and laborers in the North, as unions were forming. Unions became the single biggest category of donors to Democrats. Meanwhile, wealthy individuals and business owners, as a general rule, supported Republicans.

Democrats have not been losing the labor vote because more people are graduating college. Democrats have been losing the labor vote because New Democrats sought out the same sources of money as had been funding Republicans. Consequently, both are now funded primarily by big businesses, banksters/Wall Street and wealthy individuals.

As has been known since Biblical times, no one can serve two masters. Democrats chose the wealthier set of donors. So the former donation-based love affair between union leadership and Democrats got more and more one-sided. https://www.thenation.com/article/archive/afls-trumka-pols-selling-out-workers-ive-had-snootful-st/ And more and more of the rank and file became disenchanted with Democrats for various reasons, perhaps starting with police in New York. https://www.wnyc.org/story/john-lindsays-civilian-review-board/

In any event, no President who breaks strikes can be considered the most pro-union President. Moreover, as the UAW was contemplating this strike, Biden was contemplating bailing out suppliers, which would have lessened the impact of this strike, which was already problematic.

After I read what a pro-labor POTUS Biden supposedly is, I could read no further.

[–]risi 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Doesn't matter.

Most establishment news comes from five to seven conglomerates, whether directly or through a subsidiary. It is to the advantage of those conglomerates to support the establishment, which, in turn, supports the conglomerates. Someone paid by the conglomerate or one of its subsidiaries hires journalist and signs their paychecks--unless and until he or she fires the journalists, whereupon paychecks will end. Journalists don't want their paychecks to end. See where I'm going here?

Advertisers have no real choices among mass media and neither do consumers of news. Neither do journalists who want to work for a "major" news outlet.

So the conglomerates have no need to cater to any of them. And even if the news outlet only loses money, the benefits the conglomerates get from the establishment make up for it.

Yet another way in which most Americans are fucked.

Also, because of the above, "journalists" are all but extinct. "Journalism" and "reporting" is supposed to be objective and strictly factual. What is, today? Even the ones we like are giving us their POV.

Heading the US Department of "Justice" is, of course, Attorney General Merrick Garland.

Garland was the nominee of Obama for the seat on the SCOTUS bench vacated by the death of the infamous Antonin Scalia. When nominated, Garland was described as "a law and order pro choice Republican," even though Garland has long been a Democrat. Although many Presidents have filled seats on the SCOTUS bench despite being from a different party than their Senate majority, Obama was unable to pull it off.

Citing the "Biden rule," McConnell never brought Garland's nomination to a vote. The Biden Rule was articulated by Joe Biden, during the last year of the Presidency of Poppy Bush. Biden posited that, should a seat on the SCOTUS become vacant that year, it should not be filled until after the Presidential election.

As Biden apologists are quick to note, there was no nomination pending at the time, to which I respond, "That makes it even worse." IOW, Biden opened his yap to sound tough for no real reason, articulating a "rule" that McConnell later cited as his justification for stonewalling Obama's third Supreme Court nomination. Not smart, Joe. Then again, smart has never been Joe's strong suit.

Fun facts: During his tenure at Senate majority leader under Obama, Harry Reid used the "nuclear option" as to all federal judges except for Supreme Court Justices. So, the vote of only a "bare" majority of the Senate was needed to confirm judges. Nonetheless, Obama left over 100 seats on federal benches vacant. Reid could have included SCOTUS seats, but chose not to.

Taking it back two steps further, Democrats had won many House and Senate seats in 2006. which I interpret as a reaction to George W. Bush. Obama won the Presidency resoundingly in 2008, when Democrats added still more seats in the House and Senate. Had Obama's first two years not been so dreadful--had he enacted single payer, or even the strong public option he promised during his campaign, for example--I doubt Democrats would have experienced the historic losses they experienced in 2010. But then, Democrats would have had no excuse for the next six years.

By the same authority, the entire universe was "God's idea," including the nation of Philistia and the Philstiine people, called "Palestinians" by Westerners.

This is not between Jews and Muslims, but between Israelis and Arabs and no Muslim stole Israel.

Even according to the Bible, the Middle East was occupied continuously before the birth and conversion of Abraham (Biblically, the first Jew), from Adam and Eve until after the resurrection of Christ. That occupancy , which was by Arabs and Persians, continued after Biblical times to the present.

The first converts from paganism or Judaism converted to Christianity, not to Islam, which was not to exist until centuries later.

Jews abandoned Israel due to Romans. Thus ended any claim to God's grant of land. None of the following are God: Balfour, The Brits, the US, the UN.

From multi-billionaire Ackman's wiki article:

Personal life

Ackman married Karen Ann Herskovitz, a landscape architect, on July 10, 1994[92] and they have three children. On December 22, 2016, it was reported that the couple had separated.[3]

As of 2017, Ackman owned a Gulfstream G550 business jet.[93][94]

In 2018, Ackman became engaged to Dr. Neri Oxman.[95] In January 2019, Oxman and Ackman married at the Central Synagogue in Manhattan,[13] and they had their first child together in spring 2019.[96] In August 2019, Ackman wrote to MIT to discourage them from revealing the $125,000 donation that Jeffrey Epstein made to Oxman’s lab.[97]

Ackman endorsed Michael Bloomberg as a prospective candidate for President of the United States in the 2016 presidential election.[98] He is a longtime donor to Democratic candidates and organizations, including Richard Blumenthal, Chuck Schumer, Robert Menendez, the Democratic National Committee, and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.[99] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Ackman

Funny thing. I wanted to register at reddit as "risi," but the name was taken, hence, "redditrisi."

Because this saidit sub is a mirror of WOTB on reddit, I registered here years ago as "redditrisi."

So, this week, I tried to login as "redditrisi." The message was "no such poster." So, then, I tried to open an account as "redditrisi." The message was, "That name is already taken." Catch-22.

My next move was to try to open an account as "sockofredditrisi." But I got a 403 error message.

Finally, light dawned on marble head (as they say in Marblehead, Massachusetts). And I registered successfully a few hours ago with the name I wanted at reddit almost six years ago.

Biden: "I was able to literally, not figuratively, talk Strom Thurmond into voting for the Civil Rights Act before he died"

Which begs the question: What the hell would "I figuratively talked Strom Thurmond into voting for the Civil Rights Act" even mean?

Also, aren't the words "before he died" surplusage? Or are we thinking communicating with Thurmond during seances? Of course, the Civil Rights Act became law in 1964 and Thurmond famously lived until 2003.

Most importantly, Thurmond most certainly did not vote for the Civil Rights Act. Not only that, but Thurmond finally left the Democrat Party 2 months after the Act became law.

Strong opposition to the bill also came from Senator Strom Thurmond, who was still a Democrat at the time: "This so-called Civil Rights Proposals [sic], which the President has sent to Capitol Hill for enactment into law, are unconstitutional, unnecessary, unwise and extend beyond the realm of reason. This is the worst civil-rights package ever presented to the Congress and is reminiscent of the Reconstruction proposals and actions of the radical Republican Congress."

Yet, she calls Democrats "the left" and imagines that "conservative" is the opposite of Democrat. Also, I think Democrats were on their way to being a cult before Bush the Lesser. Maybe as early as FDR or JFK.

And the SCOTUS ruled for the ACLU, which ruling is still the "Supreme" law of the land, according the Constitution. https://mtsu.edu/first-amendment/article/728/village-of-skokie-v-national-socialist-party-of-america-ill (I know you know everything in this post, but I don't know if everyone knows it)

Either you believe all ideas belong in the "marketplace of ideas," or you believe some official or official body should decide which ideas do belong and which need to be censored. From the 1800s until the present, government has been eager to squash labor, organized or not; socialists, communists, etc. Then, it became social media--and not only with respect to Covid/vaccine issues. Tomorrow, it could be those of us advocating for single payer or survival of Social Security.

I just hope with all my heart that the SCOTUS doesn't overrule Skokie, even though I cannot abide saidit's Nazi trolls or any bigots, for that matter. I don't believe it will because, despite the illusion, the SCOTUS is, and always has been, very political.

As for the ACLU, who knows if they would fight for the first amendment rights of Nazis today. I basically wrote it off years ago, when I revoked my monthly donations (modest, but longstanding). However, now and again it surprises me pleasantly.

Elizabeth Warren Says Without Affirmative Action, A Native American Girl Like Herself Would Never Have Been Accepted To Rutgers by SudoBreakSandwich in WayOfTheBern

[–]risi 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Warren was so concerned about racial equality that, as a white person, she took positions that may well have otherwise gone to a member of an actual minority. Back in the day, workplaces and schools loved to fill positions with someone who satisfied their requirements under two categories, "female" and "member of a minority."

Also, one of Warren's major benefactors, Barack Obama, CLAIMED to want to eliminate race-based affirmative action, perhaps replacing it with affirmative action based on finances. https://www.politico.com/story/2008/08/obama-shifts-affirmative-action-rhetoric-012421; https://www.insidehighered.com/views/2008/05/12/barack-obama-and-affirmative-action; https://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=88478467 I don't recall Warren speaking out then.

Of course, that was 2008 Candidate Obama, who was very different from pre-national office campaign Obama and from President Obama; and all of the foregoing were different from post-Presidency Obama. https://chicago.suntimes.com/2023/6/29/23778469/affirmative-action-supreme-court-barack-michelle-obama-react However, all of the foregoing Obamas share at least one common trait: wanting to have it every which way. And, post-Presidency Obama has finally answered a question some asked of 2008 Obama, namely, had he and his wife benefited from affirmative action.

But back to Warren: The current Supreme Court did not veer from all affirmative action precedent. The Bakke case (1978) was the landmark case on the subject. It is often described as upholding affirmative action. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regents_of_the_University_of_California_v._Bakke

I disagree with that characterization. What the Bakke case held was that affirmative action quotas were unconstitutional. However, the Bakke opinion specified that schools could consider race as ONE factor in the admissions process/considerations. IOW, a college is allowed to strive for a diverse student body.

Colleges have always done a version of that, even when they discriminated against Jews, racial minorities and women, by looking at where a student came from, what kinds of things he had done before applying for college, etc. The concept is that diversity contributes to education and preparation for the "real world" (whatever that is).

Bottom iine: As usual, Warren is full of it--and, by "it," I don't mean pow wow chow.

Corn grown in Mexico the same way for centuries gets contaminated with Monsanto seed just because of wind and other factors.

The FDA approved marketing of Monsanto's demon seed even though Monsanto had not even complied with EPA requirements. Organic farmers sued. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monsanto_Co._v._Geertson_Seed_Farms

Obama sent his solicitor general to the SCOTUS to argue on behalf of Monsanto the FDA's ruling. (Why would a POTUS defend the FDA despite violation of EPA requirements?) The Supreme Court almost always rules the way that Solicitor General asks it to rule. The Solicitor General was Elena Kagan, now Justice Kagan.
