If reddit hadn't died (to me) and I hadn't wiped everything, I would've pointed them to my comment proving that censoring abhorrent speech doesn't prevent it from from rising again in the shadows. Biggest example being how Nazism is on the rise once again in Germany despite Nazi speech being completely suppressed.

If there's mold in your walls, you don't cover it with dry wall and call it a day.

The problem with "Punch a Nazi" is that folks like the OP start to label anyone who disagrees with them, a Nazi.

Everything this person does not like must not be said because someone else might hear it and get a bad idea. Bad ideas need to be heard so that they can be critiqued and countered in the public square just like the bad idea being represented here.

Ok we got communism, pride flag, trans flag (pride flag not enough apparently), a black hearth (emo fag), a whale (fatty acceptance?) and... a red balloon? What the hell is the red ballon 😂?

pride flag, trans flag (pride flag not enough apparently)

It's probably key to make the distinction. The folks over on s/LGBDropTheT make it clear that the pride folks are not on-board with the T folks taking over. I agree with them.

[–]bucetao6969Im a guest here. Do not take my opinion as of a community member 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

The T folk already took over. You need a new movement.

The reason I said that it's because it's very funny seeing someone using both the pride flag and trans flag, because it's apparently pride didn't already include everyone so we have to go and put trans in the spotlight. Notice how much of the movement is just about trans people and they basically got 30% of the new flag now.

They think making trans this trans that more and more will help them not be cut from the movement. Lol.

Sorry sdl5, but I am missing your meaning. To which view of mine are you referring?

Meanwhile, just FTR, I didn't change my name, even a little. I had registered here years ago as redditrisi, just in case. Recently, I tried repeatedly to log in as redditris ("no such poster") or register as redditrisi ("there's already a poster by that name"), but could not do either.

After I guessed that "reddit" might be the reason for the runaround, I registered as "risi" and tried to make "redditrisi" my flair, but could not. So, with the flair, I did the best I could to let r/WOTBers know who I am.

I know you said nothing about my saidit account name, but I just wanted that to be clear.

Would I let a nazi, fascist, or racist openly ... spew their vitriol in the streets for others to hear and possibly perpetuate?

At one point in time, the ACLU would....

[–]risistill me 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

And the SCOTUS ruled for the ACLU, which ruling is still the "Supreme" law of the land, according the Constitution. https://mtsu.edu/first-amendment/article/728/village-of-skokie-v-national-socialist-party-of-america-ill (I know you know everything in this post, but I don't know if everyone knows it)

Either you believe all ideas belong in the "marketplace of ideas," or you believe some official or official body should decide which ideas do belong and which need to be censored. From the 1800s until the present, government has been eager to squash labor, organized or not; socialists, communists, etc. Then, it became social media--and not only with respect to Covid/vaccine issues. Tomorrow, it could be those of us advocating for single payer or survival of Social Security.

I just hope with all my heart that the SCOTUS doesn't overrule Skokie, even though I cannot abide saidit's Nazi trolls or any bigots, for that matter. I don't believe it will because, despite the illusion, the SCOTUS is, and always has been, very political.

As for the ACLU, who knows if they would fight for the first amendment rights of Nazis today. I basically wrote it off years ago, when I revoked my monthly donations (modest, but longstanding). However, now and again it surprises me pleasantly.

ETA So, a couple of hours after I wrote the paragraph above this one, I saw this thread: https://saidit.net/s/WayOfTheBern/comments/b469/us_ruling_class_sets_the_stage_for_a_massive/ , which links to this article: https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2023/07/06/ikhq-j06.html

Nothing new, of course, each of those programs has been under attack by the plutonomists since each of them was first proposed. But we've not had so many tax cuts and so many wars using our resources as we have during the past several consecutive decades since Clinton ran on "welfare reform."

I know that the ACLU used to have one huge donor, who passed on some years ago. But I don't know much else.

It's like everything else: existing takes money and we are a society divided between Democrats and Republicans. If you are political--and civil liberties are political--you can get funding from Democrats or from Republicans or cease to exist or close to it. (See, for example, the Green Party). Because if you are not for the wealthy, you are for poor people who don't have money to make big donations.

The beneficiaries of Social Security--the elderly, the disabled and the "widows and orphans" of deceased workers are not merely "useless eaters." They are a threat to national security. Hence, it was Kissinger, as head of US National Security for Nixon, who wrote the memo that was dubbed the "useless eaters memo."

In penelopepnortney's post listing some notable r/WOTB posts, you can see two posts with the word "Shocktober" in the title. I wrote them some time ago about this subject.

    [–]Centaurea 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

At one time, the ACLU actively supported the First Amendment. That was before they became an arm of the Dem party establishment.

Is it stupidity? Or is people lurching from fear, insecurity, and hopelessness with nowhere to turn to for relief. American left has been ridden into the ground, blown up, dissected and utterly defeated. People are screaming into the abyss to make themselves feel sane seems like a completely natural response.

Is it stupidity? Or is people lurching from fear, insecurity, and hopelessness with nowhere to turn to for relief.

We can turn to each other, and to some extent that seems to be happening worldwide. I think people, everywhere, are beginning to understand, that our owners are becoming more desperate by the day to maintain the "world Order" they've self righteously appointed themselves to manage.

The authoritarian nature of their desperation is more overt now, and those who have managed to circumvent the conditioning process of our owners education system, their media propagandists, and the partisan programming required to keep our owners demockracy safe from the people, are speaking out - and others are listening intently to what they're saying.

The internet may have been a gift from Government Inc. so the alphabets could keep their fingers on the pulse of the nation in real time, but they can't seem to get a handle on controlling the whole damn thing, although the current manipulations of reddit shows they're still trying like hell.

I don't mean to imply that everyone's stupid, and that they don't feel powerless to affect change. Given the management we're under that excels at promoting individualism while at the same time dividing us into our silos of group identity, it's no small wonder we're mentally fucked as a society.

I'm just a cynical old bastard who survived the 60's, and the war on terror they waged against us then.

It's gotten exponentially worse for all of us since those times, but screaming into the abyss is one of the reasons our owners gifted the hoi polloi their internet.

As long as we're screaming here, they're safe conducting business as usual out there.

    Same as it ever was...

We're back to square one again. People forget who fought for them in the past...

    Exactly.

    Same as it ever was...

    Same, but different.

They've now had over a century to prepare against a repeat of the Russian Revolutions.

FDR did it with New Deal programs and propaganda, which propaganda continued to this day, and expanded and became increasingly successful. Now, it's not only government that wants censorship but the hoi pollloi seeking it

What also increased since the Great Depression--technology. If they want, they can probably tell you who is or isn't using birth control, let alone who is taking steps against them.

What also increased since the Great Depression. Their preparation for dealing with any attempted revolution that their surveillance causes them to suspect.

Yet, we keep waiting for the politician who will save us, if only he or she existed and became known to us and we could defeat the RNC, the DNC, their two huge cults, all establishment media and some nominally "independent" media and all the money available through the monied class. And win, just by posting and voting, and without raising money except such as we may raise for said super hero politician.

Yes, I agree with you: if we want any positive change, we must turn to each other and help each other. We're not going to end wars, but neither are politicians. But we might improve each other's lives. Politicians are not going to improve ours.

If I were government, I'd be thrilled about the nation remaining quietly indoors, keeping its fingers on keyboards, especially since I would have the technology to track every email, every post, etc. And, I could subpoena more info if I chose from the fucking FISA courts that Democrats set up during the Carter administration.

However, the PTB's need for even that may have passed. As Snowden recently said, surveillance capability today greatly surpasses that of 2013. And my guess is that their contingency plans should anyone actually attempt revolution have also kept pace.

I apologize for the "No true Scotsman" logical fallacy, but there's so much fakery on the internet that it's all but unavoidable.

I wish I had a dime for every Democrat who posted in r/WOTB during the run up to the 2020 election who self-identified as an anarcho-communist, a communist, a socialist or whatever, before adding, "but I'm voting for Biden anyway because....."

IOW, the ways that anonymous posters and/or their socks self-identify on the internet "don't impress me much."

Hell, even lifelong Democrats I know IRL had trouble voting for Biden and some did not. But, on the internet, any shill, paid or true believer, can claim to be anything.

Censorship, including in the US, existed long before Nazis. I don't imagine that anyone was free to tell Julius Caesar to fuck off. (Sure, you could plot secretly to kill him but that was before the NSA.)

But censorship works best from government's POV when government is willing to be openly brutal about it. And, in the US, government must also be willing to be flagrant about violating the First Amendment. We're not there yet, or Biden would not have stopped with his Homeland Security Disinformation Board. But, we keep getting closer.
