Copy/paste of u/FThumb's Reddit post, "Reddit is killing third-party applications (and itself).":

On July 1st, 2023, Reddit intends to alter how its API is accessed. This move will require developers of third-party applications to pay enormous sums of money if they wish to stay functional, meaning that said applications will be effectively destroyed. In the short term, this may have the appearance of increasing Reddit's traffic and revenue... but in the long term, it will undermine the site as a whole.

Reddit relies on volunteer moderators to keep its platform welcoming and free of objectionable material. It also relies on uncompensated contributors to populate its numerous communities with content. The above decision promises to adversely impact both groups: Without effective tools (which Reddit has frequently promised and then failed to deliver), moderators cannot combat spammers, bad actors, or the entities who enable either, and without the freedom to choose how and where they access Reddit, many contributors will simply leave. Rather than hosting creativity and in-depth discourse, the platform will soon feature only recycled content, bot-driven activity, and an ever-dwindling number of well-informed visitors. The very elements which differentiate Reddit – the foundations that draw its audience – will be eliminated, reducing the site to another dead cog in the Ennui Engine.

We implore Reddit to listen to its moderators, its contributors, and its everyday users; to the people whose activity has allowed the platform to exist at all: Do not sacrifice long-term viability for the sake of a short-lived illusion. Do not tacitly enable bad actors by working against your volunteers. Do not posture for your looming IPO while giving no thought to what may come afterward. Focus on addressing Reddit's real problems – the rampant bigotry, the ever-increasing amounts of spam, the advantage given to low-effort content, and the widespread misinformation – instead of on a strategy that will alienate the people keeping this platform alive.

If Steve Huffman's statement – "I want our users to be shareholders, and I want our shareholders to be users" – is to be taken seriously, then consider this our vote:

Allow the developers of third-party applications to retain their productive (and vital) API access.

Allow Reddit and Redditors to thrive.

Hey everyone.

It looks like Reddit has decided to alienate its own platform. I suspect that Saidit and other competitors are going to see a surge, like Lemmy.

Hi, so did wayofthebern completely disappear on Reddit? I don’t even see it listed as a private community and all my wayofthebern posts are gone?

[–]risistill me 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I bookmarked a link WOTB on my toolbar long before it went private.

If I click on the bookmarked link, I see WOTB with a standard reddit notice that it is a private community a more custom message linking us to saidit. And that's all.

[–]penelopepnortneyBecome ungovernable[S] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (7 children)

It's all still there, don't know why it isn't showing up as a private community.

[–]risistill me 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (6 children)

It shows to me (redditrisi) as a private community. All my WOTB posts are invisible to me, though and I cannot access WOTB. Are only the mods "approved members" right now?

[–]penelopepnortneyBecome ungovernable[S] 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (5 children)

Basically, yes. We're still monitoring things there though there isn't anything really happening other than "join" requests. Some from members, most from suspiciously new accounts. We just use a canned reply about the API blackout with a link to bring them to this sub.

[–]risistill me 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

Thank you! Reddit periodically unsubscribes me from r/WOTB, so I couldn't tell.

Reddit periodically unsubscribes me from r/WOTB

That's bizarre. I know you've mentioned that before and we've had a few other members (and even a couple of mods, if memory serves) complain of the same thing.

[–]risistill me 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

It's happened every time I think to check. I just refuse to take a hint. (-;

I should remember to check more often. Technically, reddit can ban me because I keep posting and voting in WOTB while (involuntarily) unsubscribed.

[–]NetweaselContinuing the struggle 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

I should remember to check more often.

A suggestion for the next time it happens:

Make a short Reddit Post describing this effect that you have (just then) personally witnessed, and tell others how to quickly check to see if it has happened to them, and how to fix it. There may be hundreds out there, unknowing.

Relaying personal experience is better than saying "some person said this happened."

[–]risistill me 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Sure, if the "indefinite" protest ends and I remember to do the OP. (Feel free to remind me, if I forget.)

I seldom remember to keep checking my own status.

It seems to still exist, just tucked away.

my wayofthebern posts are gone?

Even when you look though your own post history?

[–]risistill me 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

yes.

If I log into reddit as redditrisi (risi is "still me"), I see the OPs I've posted in WOTB, but no comments that I've posted in WOTB.'

On edit. No, I see nothing that I have posted in WOTB, neither the OPs nor the comments/replies. I see only what I posted in other subs.

[–]NetweaselContinuing the struggle 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

As I said to someone else, that's just mean of Reddit.

[–]risistill me 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

As "author" of my posts, I own the copyright in whatever I write that is original with me (not something I quoted, for example), yes. Reddit gets to use whatever I post. It's in the reddit user agreement. Same is true for every board on which I've ever posted.

The account name should be somewhere on the archived private page.

And too many users are oblivious to the personal information they're putting out there, ripe for abuse. Sadly, most tech users are totally clueless. My nephew bought a used late model SUV with Bluetooth installed that hadn't been wiped either by the previous owners or the dealership and within minutes he knew who they were, where they lived, the names and numbers of everyone they'd had phone contact with, etc.

7978 out of 8304 pledged at the moment, so the numbers may still be increasing.

But that's just the reporting on one twitch stream. There could be others going dark without registering their intent.

The problem with counting subscribers (which would be a lovely number to have) is overlap.

I had no idea the blackout covered such a large % of subs. 👍🏽

Well, "percentage of subs" can mean many things. That is a very high percentage of subs that said they were gonna do it doing it, but out of the millions of subreddits that currently exist, not so much.

Of all the subreddits with over 10,000 people in them, we don't know the percentage of that group.

        [–]3andfro 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (26 children)

That was the Q: how many subs are there in total, even a ballpark figure.

        [–]NetweaselContinuing the struggle 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

The extra problem is this: If you divide subreddits into "functioning" and "non-functioning" subreddits, we do not know how many of the about 8000 dark subreddits are on which side of the line.

You could assume that the 8000 are all in the "only 7,500 actually functioning subreddits," (to arbitrarily choose a number), but you'd be wrong.

        [–]3andfro 4 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Seems the same issue would arise for that (inflated?) total number of subs from Maniak's comment.

        [–]NetweaselContinuing the struggle 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

Alternatively, you could go to subredditstats, choose one of their criteria, and scroll waaaay down to the Xth sub on that list and see how "actual" the Xth sub actually is.

If it turns out that the 5000th sub ranked by "comments per day" is pretty dead, well, there ya go.

        [–]3andfro 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

So we don't know, and probably can't know, how many subs and how many users (even with overlapping membership across subs) are participating in the blackout. Not surprising, but a tad frustrating.

        [–]NetweaselContinuing the struggle 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

Not surprising, but a tad frustrating.

how many subs are there in total, even a ballpark figure.

Well, Maniak grabbed and dove into the Pushshift Data Dump, looking for WayoftheBern, and found it in a "ranked by posts+comments" ranking at #714 out of about 13.5 million alleged subreddits, each with an individual name.

        We're on line 714 out of 13575389

Best "ballpark" I can give you. Upper bound of "number of subreddits" : 13,575,389. You could theoretically crawl through the same database and see how many of those 13.5 million would count as "actual" subs, if you could define the term by "total comments+posts."

Simply see what line the smallest "actual" sub is on, and Bob's your uncle.

        [–]Maniak🥃😾 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (17 children)

Well, Maniak grabbed and dove into the Pushshift Data Dump, looking for WayoftheBern, and found it in a "ranked by posts+comments" ranking at #714 out of about 13.5 million alleged subreddits, each with an individual name.

Addendum to this, I used a "subreddit_counts.txt" file that was made specifically for this purpose, and those subreddits include the "user subs", with a fuckton of subs named "u_{username}", which explains the 13.5 million.

Going up to the first lines where the count is at least 1000 brings me to r/discountharmony at 1000, still with a lot of user subs above that. Whether or not they should be counted as proper subs is another question.

In any case, and that's without having information about which ones are actually active, the number of subs that have any kind of significance when it comes to usage and traffic is way, way, WAY below the 2.8 million number that was asserted in the thread above.

The 100k mark (for posts + comments) is crossed at line 12075 with r/imagesofflorida at 100001.

On the other end of the list, the #1 sub is r/askreddit with 746,740,850 posts+comments, that one is participating in the blackout.

#2 is r/politics, that one is as usual being an establishment bitch.

        Then r/funny, r/pics, r/worldnews, r/memes, r/teenagers, r/nba, the only remaining ones above 100M. Of those, only r/worldnews and r/memes are not participating.

So basically, as far as content is concerned, the top 8 subs have more than 1.5 billion posts+comments. Of those, about 1.2 billion are blacked out.

Reddit suffers a major outage after thousands of subreddits temporarily shut down

"A significant number of subreddits shifting to private caused some expected stability issues, and we’ve been working on resolving the anticipated issue," Reddit told Engadget in a statement. At 1:26PM, the company said the outage was resolved and things were back to normal, barring the protest.

I can see this happening if they hardcoded subs for optimization. Their mistake is that this is a temporary solution that should have been fixed

Leave it to Reddit to have "a major outage" because of less activity and resource usage.

You've got hundreds of thousands of bots pinging subreddits they can't access, effectively a DDOS.

As of last week, the number of participating subreddits was just over 3,000. But by Monday morning, the number had climbed to more than 6,200 communities, according to a Twitch stream tracking the protest. With the blackout, participating subreddits have posted brief messages alerting users that they are protesting the company’s planned API changes. Most have committed to a 48-hour blackout, but at least 60 subreddits say they plan to protest “indefinitely” until the company walks back its changes. Many are also urging users not to browse Reddit at all. Some have also set up Discord servers to encourage subscribers to stay off of Reddit.

Whoever came up with Saidit as a WotB escape hatch was pretty sharp.

I watched One Piece community decide to move and Warframe is going Mastodon.

Some of the fighting game subs are staying but we are watching the Digg effect

I have a bad feeling that they will try to take down saidit by posting very provocative post, just like they did on discord so mods have to become more strict

Eh, the rest of Saidit, is a bit 4chan-y. It would have to be a hell of a post.
