Reposted this message with permission from u/WandersFar:

I’ve been manually approving over 2k users at my sub over the last week. -.-

Then this morning we received a threat from the admin.

And an invitation to join lemmy at the same time. Passing along the info as it may be relevant to your interests…

Lemmy is a federated Reddit alternative that is decentralized. The analogy would be what Mastodon is to Twitter. There is no hierarchy, anyone can start a server, and all you need to do to create a community is register an account.

Like I did about an hour ago: https://lemmy.world/c/thegoodplace

You might considering creating a WotB mirror there, as it’s pretty hopping right now. I haven’t even announced it on r/TheGoodPlace yet and we’re already gaining subscribers.

And you don’t have to run your own server, which is what I mistakenly thought, and why I was reluctant to join until now. You can just join an existing one; I’m still learning my way around, but I think lemmy.world is the general purpose one, and where many subreddits have migrated.

If you need server space for hosting the sub I can probably help with that. I have access to servers and bandwidth at no cost.

I've been hearing more about this, but still have no idea what it is.

I finally managed to create an account there, took a while but from what WandersFar said I'm guessing they're being overwhelmed with subreddits trying to set up subs there. I still haven't been able to create a community for the same reason, will keep you posted.

[–]therazorx👹🧹🥇 The road to truth is often messy. 👹📜🕵️🎖️ 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

So as you've correctly noted, we don't really have any good options. WOTB is absolutely one of the subs they'd love to "Take over" and "change" it into a more establishment friendly sub. I haven't forgotten that post of the conversation between you and the (ferrari?) guy.

At this point, I think even this lifeboat isn't enough, and that we absolutely need a fediverse alternative "lifeboat" so to speak (lemmy or kbin or something).

As for what I think we should do, well, we don't have any good options.

Speaking personally, and certainly up for discussion as this is what I see as I flatten out that crumpled ball of paper from the bottom of the wastebasket and contemplate the scribbles (haha Giant Meteor and Reddit HQ), I'd like to see r/WotB reopen, disallow posts (text posts only), a comment requirement (ala The Turtle) be that ALL comments must include "I hate Reddit," and we leave a pinned post pointing to this Sadit alternative.

I'd say re-open as restricted, but then we need to figure out a way to migrate ALL content over to our lifeboats (and no we can't have /u/penelopepnortney copy pasting every thread manually). I'm sure someone either already made tools to do so, or will make them soon, but the point is we absolutely need to move all the volumes of useful data and discussions over.

Why? Because I don't trust that even if we were to behave like perfect reddit netizens that they'd still keep us around. Tinfoil hat time , and for the lulz, Dead internet theory

As for what we can do in the meantime, I like the turtle idea, but instead of I Hate Reddit, I'd mandate linking to something that explains what's going on, what the users themselves should do to raze their accounts, and where they can/should move to. Would be hilarious to watch all the shills actually be forced to shill for reddit's demise.

[–]penelopepnortneyBecome ungovernable 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

we absolutely need a fediverse alternative

Totally agree with this, because it's not just reddit where this kind of war on dissenting viewpoints is being waged and it's only getting worse as numerous items in the "War on disinformation" link compilation in the sidebar attest.

We have a number of tech savvy people among our members. The biggest challenge is finding/creating a space that is user-friendly and familiar enough for the rest of us. We've had some conversations with a few members who tried to bring us all up to speed - here's one of them; u/tabesadf also invested a bunch of time in a Q&A with the mods, I'll see if I can link to that as well in the "Tech convos" sidebar I'm working on bringing over now. It never went anywhere because there was no sense of urgency at the time but I think that has changed now.

I'm not savvy enough to take any kind of a leading role in such a migration but I'm a great grunt worker and hereby volunteer for such a project in that capacity.

Sounds good. We need the Reddit sub as a containment for all the paid shills and the obsessive candidate groupies that we were going to be bombarded with, anyway, as it's coming on Pres election season. Would rather they don't clog up the works up over here.

Good point. But what about when WotB turns into r/politics, when everyone of substance moves off-site? I mean even now, the front page and comments are a total shill-fest, with just the blackout.

We will have to migrate back at some point, but the goal should be maximum damage to Reddit's bottom line while maintaining the sub's existence. Saidit functions pretty well minus a few small differences and the lighter traffic.

I don't think reddit places ads on WotB, so we (the sub) can't reduce their revenue by remaining dark.

(Not an argument either way)

We're not doing anyone a favor by slinking away from reddit with our tail between our legs. The vast difference between the number of regular posters and the tally of subscribers tells me a lot more people read than commented.

And yes, we were on their shit list and they will use this as an excuse to permanently shitcan us. They'll install their powermods in the larger subs first, but eventually their resident geniuses will work their way down to us, and everything we ever posted there will be gone.

I've been published and paid and even I think it's funny that there's hundreds of people reading me spout off. My journalism was legit but the stuff I was posting in the the r/collapse war megathreads was stimulant insanity with good points here or there. This was a Euroskeptic War Megathread, so the sub stopped after six weeks and there was also a putsch as neolib hawks took hold.

I know It'd entertain me 100x more than you but you should at least scroll down a bit. There's several frequent commenters but I made up like 50% of the total comments on like 180mg Amphetamines.. It did not end well for me though. Though I was only sleeping like 4 nights a week at that job. Online sales for half the income is legit and 10% of the work.. Reddit isn't going to cave on this. It is pretty obvious from their communications that they hold users and especially mods in utter contempt, and they think they can manage this with little difficulty.

I personally don't use any of the 3rd party apps, so I don't know what others are going to be losing with the announced changes. My experience with similar situations have been eBay and YouTube shutting down apps that I did use, and they certainly never cared enough to reverse course, even when the changes significantly impacted revenues (eBay).

[–]captainramen🇺🇸🛠️ MAGA Communist 🛠️🇺🇸 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Reddit's investors will ultimately decide that. Reddit can claim that revenue hasn't been affected, but only because advertising is sold in blocks. Personally, I think we'll know by July if the strike worked or not.

[–]kingsmegLiberté, égalité, fraternité 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Reddit will take action long before that, and the effect on revenues will be irrelevant by July because the damage will be irreversible.

Although, unless the traffic levels go down, Reddit may not mind.

They just need those "directed ads" that people paid for to go where they paid for them to go.
Reddit may not care one whit what is around those ads, as long as they can get the money.

Welcome everyone!

we leave a pinned post pointing to this Sadit alternative.

Take it a step further, and have AutoMod leave a pinned comment on every new post advertising that you've moved over here. That's what my sub did, and it really helped with our migration before we were banned. The problem with only using a sticky post is that Reddit changed how they're seen for mobile users some time back, and those users may miss it since it will collapse after they've been to the sub a few times.

I would recommend re-opening the sub in some limited manner, if only to get your message out. Another lovely feature of Reddit for mobile users is that they won't see your full private sub message with the redirect. I just pulled it up on my phone (browser, not app) and this is all I see: https://imgur.com/a/WWtahwb

Patience is undervalued. Sometimes the only way to move forward is to wait to see how things unfold. Why should we give anything to reddit if they aren't willing give anything in return? Our power is in what we can take from Reddit. Reddit won't repeal their authoritarian over reach. Spez says we are just, "noise". Spez will find out silence is far worse. Reddit slowly going silent will make driving traffic to the site more and more difficult. Conde Nast will shut down Reddit if they don't make a profit. I watched Dig die when they didn't listen to their users. I'll watch Reddit die just the same. Embrace Reddit's authoritarianism choices with equal unyielding resoluteness.

Dreyfuss is excellent. It's clear that he'd been wanting to play The First Player forever. But my dad assured me that the First Player he saw on the stage in London was even better.

Be sure to see it on wide screen. One of the best parts is when The Players perform an outstanding mime version of Hamlet to entertain Elsinore's kitchen staff. It uses the whole width of the screen.

The minor characters in R&G are the major characters in Hamlet, including Hamlet, Claudius, Gertrude, Polonius, and Ophelia. The actors in the movie are so good I wanted to see a full production of Hamlet with that same cast.

I was expecting you to mention The Pickle.

      Dang, missed it.

Must be because I have a slide rule on my desk, but not a pickle.

Even if we don't agree on everything, you guys are doing good work.

Even if we don't agree on everything, you guys are doing good work.

Agreement is not a goal; Civil engagement is.
Unity is not a goal; Tolerance of others is.
Conformity is not a goal; Enlightened debate is.

In glancing around Saidit, I have seen a lot of what WayoftheBern was trying to do inside of Reddit.

Trying to be Saidit, inside of Reddit, before there even was a Saidit, presented some interesting problems.

      That led to interesting solutions.

I like your quote, however tolerance is not a virtue, it is a weakness.

      I see

I believe tolerance of misinformation, along with the patience and effort to work out what's real to you and what's not, and the willingness to trust your neighbor - not government - to do the same, is a strength.

      [–]Dragonerne 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

Would you call conversion therapy tolerance of gays?

      Edit: I like your username

Hmm, gotta be honest, I'm not particularly informed regarding conversion therapy. If I had to say, it feels like the opposite of tolerance.

      Edit: thanks! :D

The reason I asked is, because your sentiment of misinformation can be applied to conversion therapy

I believe tolerance of [gays], along with the patience and effort to work out what's real to you and what's not (conversion therapy) is a strength

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. Are you equating gay (a state of being) with misinformation (a state of truth/untruth)?

however tolerance is not a virtue, it is a weakness.

Try running anything mechanical without it.

tolerance is not a virtue, it is a weakness.

Would that then make intolerance a strength?

      [–]FThumbStay thirsty, my friends[S] 5 insightful - 2 fun5 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Only if you're intolerant of the tolerant.
