Another great example of how lies propagate on Reddit by TruthTeller in MeanwhileOnReddit

I can't stand images like this where it is two unrelated, unfounded claims/cases that are supposed to be juxtaposed and telling of a deeper point that people spread to push agendas. It feels like I see them constantly all over the internet. Simplistic comparisons like that that remove all context or often even just plain fact are for morons, regardless of it is representing something you agree with or disagree with. I find it really aggravating when I see people use things like that to make a point and immediately lose all respect for anything they are saying. Nothing is black white and not everything is related just because you put them next to each other on a meme.

I'm posting this because everytime I see anything about Boris on reddit a large part of what people discuss in every thread there seems to be how he is playing a character, so I thought I'd dig out this clip of the man himself acknowledging it.

Workers of Saidit, What Was Your Least Favorite Job? by theFriendlyDoomer in AskSaidIt

[–]piss 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

My first job was on the support phones for an online bank. It was pretty much used as the only place that would take people who either had too poor credit to go anywhere else or were new to the country and did not have paperwork required for normal banks. The job itself wasn't anything tough but it sure was emotionally taxing. The people who used it were pretty much the worst off people in the country yet our fees were so much higher than other banks, re routinely had problems on our end that made people lose money through no fault of their own, and just generally screwed people over. I would say the aim of my job at that time was not to solve people's issues - I had been warned about spending too much time helping people, but moreso just to get them off the phone. The only statistics that mattered were how many calls you got through and whether you remembered to say the company mandated call opening line, closing line and a few bits in between. How well you solved issues simply didn't come into it. A large part of the job was pretty much just being a wall for people to yell at - they would call up, have a problem that is clearly our fault, I would tell them I can not do anything, let them get angry for 5 minutes and then revert back to company approved procedure where we pretty much just tried to get them off the phone and eat the losses and stop calling.

It was very disheartening to see the people who needed assistance the most getting screwed over the most, with nowhere else to turn really. That isn't even mentioning how terribly the staff were treated, how much unpaid overtime there was through no fault of anyone working there (servers going down etc.), the poor hours where you would start wildly different times each day, regardless of what time you finished the previous day (often finish at 10, back in at 7 - it was just luck of the draw)

Yeah, that's what the "frightening" part of my comment was alluding to.

That's petty and a bit frightening. I really haven't seen anyone just blanket advertising by spamming links or anything so I don't think they even have an excuse to say it was to stop spam advertising. Anytime alternatives are mentioned that I have seen at least it is people asking / talking about alternatives. The timing too right when people are going to be looking for alternatives. It's just pure filtering out the competition, pathetic.

Does anyone else feel that division between 'Left' and 'right' only serves to further divide us? by Freshly_Squeezed in conspiracy

[–]piss 13 insightful - 2 fun13 insightful - 1 fun14 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Tinpot theory: The only divide that really matters is the wealth divide. Anything else - politics, race, sex, etc. does not have any impact if you are part of the uber rich - you have fuck you money and can do what you want. You can not say this about any of the other divisions. The people who own the media, corporations etc. constantly pit the lower classes against each other by focusing in on these less important divides to keep them busy hating each other while the rug is swept from under their feet. Income equality grows year on year. Your rights are removed year on year, with the fear mongering around the less important divides used as an excuse to do so. Surveillance and control increases through the same means. Could it really be as simple as keep people busy hating each other so they leave the uber rich alone?

In a more general sense though there are lots of parties that would have interest in sowing discord. Divide and conquer can seem like a cliche but that's because it works lol.

While I wouldn't doubt that was the intent it could be spun so many different ways. If you go by global population it's Asian. It just seems like a bizarre way to go about it / phrase it even if that is their intent.

How on earth would you even judge who is in the majority? of the global population? of the subreddit's community? In America? Based on where your IP is posting from?

I really think if there was to be a final nail in the coffin for Reddit, this would be it. It's total clown world.

Hey, welcome. Best advice I would say about stopping it turning into the polar opposite would be just be the change/behavior you want to see. With the userbase still relatively small in comparison to reddit the best thing you can do it just take part in the friendly/honest discussion and either ignore or challenge the posts that are just people pushing their view point.

You do see people who are clearly just posting shit they can't post on reddit anymore which is inevitable and not always a bad thing but there are also plenty of people just looking for civil conversation who aren't tied up in narratives. It's as you said, you make your own home.

What made you switch from reddit to Saidit? by Wrang1er in AskSaidIt

Honestly if they aren't bots a lot of them may as well be. So many reddit jokes seem to be just parrot something & feel good for being part of an in joke regardless of if it is even funny in the context they're posting it. This extends beyond jokes for general talking points too. The amount of people whose discussion feels like it's limited to this person says x talking point, now I say Y talking point in response and back and forth is annoying and like you said tiresome.

Despite using it for 8/9 years I was never much of a fan of wider reddit culture. Pretty much any of the subreddits on the front page I never liked, I never liked wider reddit culture and I never liked the archetypal 'redditor' if that makes sense. What I did enjoy were smaller communities that ignored that stuff or weren't even aware of it. Be that a game sub, sport sub, basically something with a dedicated purpose to an interest and people who liked talking about that. The type of subreddits I enjoyed were the ones where it felt like the average user was there because it was one of the biggest spaces to discuss what they were interested in online, and had no loyalties / interest in most of the rest of 'reddit culture'. /r/soccer back in the day springs to mind - it felt very much like normal people talking in a normal manner about what they liked without and 'redditor' esque elements to it. The conversations you had felt just like what you'd have in real life down the pub or whatever. People would post 'fuck /r/all' on anything that was going to get to the front page to point this out lol. I still enjoy the soccer subreddit but it is much more typical reddit sub than normal conversations now, albeit still (thankfully) far less than a lot of the rest of the site.

Over time, subreddits would all get too big and have too many users interested in the happenings of the wider reddit sphere and bring that mentality / trending topics to those communities. It's like they were reddit-washed over time lol, and no longer was it just someone looking to talk about their interest on the internet, but it was a redditor looking to post about something on reddit. Their loyalties were to the wider reddit culture and ecosphere and no longer just whatever they were posting about.

So I never had any loyalty to the site really, and the parts I didn't like only grew over time. Then ice_poseidon2 got banned from reddit and moved here and it was refreshing to see people having normal conversations on the other subs here. I don't post much outside of IP2 but I always enjoy reading people's perspectives and discussion of those perspectives put across in a normal, friendly, interested, engaging manner without the point scoring, muh side vs yuh side, etc. you see a lot on reddit. I enjoy lurking here. If you could remove all the redditors from reddit and it had no wider culture, just interest specific subreddits I would use it more still.

I'm not saying not to use the other subs, I'm saying not to post his IP2 verification vid 3 times on the entertainment sub lol. It doesn't make sense and no one without the context of why he is posting it would understand it / take anything away from it. At the time of posting this he was still getting used to the website, I was just letting him know that he'd posted to the wrong place for what he was trying to do - which was verify himself on IP2, not post his stream link in a general saidit sub. If he wants to post on here in general that's great and I hope he does.
