Two sub-reddits I thought the oddest were the ones that said the empire did nothing wrong and thanos did nothing wrong. Most people don't like to say something was "on balance better" or "had justifiable motivations." They would much rather say "did nothing wrong."

Hitler wanted to ally with Britain, something forgotten today.

I have heard that recently from studying Mencius Moldbug.

Churchill the warmonger (and he was a warmonger who never wasted a chance to waste the lives of British soldiers)

Another series of dots people don't connect is that Churchill not only completely opposed Ghandi, but when he took to giving speeches he used the same language denigrating "appeasement" that he would later use against the Third Reich.

Because the U.S. up to that point had a long history of a) the Monroe Doctrine and b) demobilizing immediately after wars. Though we got dragged into WWI, we even demobilized right after it and started referring to that war as "the war to end all wars." War with Germany was a super unpopular idea in the U.S. I recommend William Manchester's book The Glory and the Dream for the background. Though FDR was in fact trying to build that support (and, sure, I'll listen to the theory that he allowed had the intel but let Pearl Harbor happen) he hadn't really gotten there. Hitler declaring war, an act no one but himself made him do, gave all the PR needed to get support for the two-front war.

Look at the actual history of U.S. in protracted wars, such as the Civil War (ie from the North's perspective) or Vietnam. The public gets sick of fighting them. Also, imagine the kind of warfare the U.S. had to do against Japan -- island to island, against suicide runs. In this timeline, we might have grinded through more citizens but not had the A-bomb in time to speed up the surrender of the mainland.

In the meantime, if Hitler wins the Soviet front, he has all the oil he needs. Or, if he wins the U.K. front, he can set up a much better defense against U.S. invasion.

If you don't want to provide any proof of anything, I don't know why you want to make this one of your hobbies, but to each his own.

The one thing you highlighted was me saying Germany declared war on the U.S. So you do not think Germany declared war on the U.S.? There is recorded evidence of Hitler's speech. We would have focused all our energy on Japan if Hitler hadn't declared war. Churchill himself was glad Hitler did, because the U.S. might have stopped supplying as much to the U.K. (that's in the Wikipedia article above).

If we fought Japan for several years, perhaps Germany would have won one of the two fronts. In either case, they would probably be able to shift into a better defensive stance. I think the U.S. public could then have been convinced it was not worth it. . .

You are deflecting.

I happen to agree with Mencius Moldbug's idea of the Cathedral.. In other words, yes, we have a problem here. The left has created a culture of superficial charity that masks power-grabs by the elites. I imagine you think only Jews could be so greedy and scheming, whereas I think most people can be and have been. Communism has been chic in intellectual circles on and off in a way that is truly sickening.

All of that is true. But the Nazi also did a lot of bad things, far more than bad things any democracy I can think of. Are you just going to pretend they didn't?

What does that even mean? Did some non-government Jewish groups hold a publicity stunt press conference or something?

I'm not trying to be disrespectful. I just don't know what you're talking about. Do you have a link to something -- ideally, something from a historian or even Wikipedia?

But, war is declared by governments. At that time, we did it through Congress. After that, we started doing it more and more through executive order. Hitler as executive of his country declared war on us.

And, yes, we were supplying the U.K. heavily. But still, declaring the war is a blunder -- maybe even a bigger one than opening up the Soviet front before the U.K. was defeated. I mean, seriously, educate me if you have the time and evidence, but it looks like Hitler had multiple opportunities to shift into a defensive stance, having already acquired "living space" for his people. (I understand oil might be another matter. Still don't declare war on the U.S. The U.S. public would have been it's finicky self).

I'm going to go full cynic here and say that our billionaires are now stuck with a choice: either move to China or stay in the West. Since I think they'll stay in the West, they'll now start changing the cultural narrative. They already made their money on Chinese labor, so they got what they wanted from pushing this tolerance. They can now switch to robotics and bring a lot of production back (oh. . . jobs at Western wages? I'll believe those when I see them and will be happy if my cynicism was overblown).

Well, if it was good enough for Reagan it should be good enough for most people.

To further play with the idea a bit. . .

The thing is that a corporation doesn't exist in nature. It only comes into existence with a government charter. Governments could choose to only offer charters to companies that made employees shareholders, diluting shares as new employees come on. This is even compatible with the minarchies that libertarians dream about. If some rich people wanted to make business entities structured so they would reap all the profits -- fine, but they won't be able to have any liability protection that comes with a corporate charter. They would be personally liable for what happens.

But I think there still would be a route to be a capitalist, however. It costs money to purchase the equipment, land, train people, etc. The companies in question would need to borrow money, if nothing else to start out. I don't see why the people who make good loans shouldn't be able to get rich doing so. Capital allocation is a real skill and it has a real value in society. (It's value is not unlimited, however, and too-big-to-fail institutions should have been broken up by now).

I'd be worried about securing retirement in this fantasy scenario, however. You don't want everyone just owning shares in the one company where they worked when it comes retirement time. Some will get rich, some will watch their former company fail. Maybe the bond market mentioned above could roll out diversified products. Or maybe there should be the ability to sale you shares when you retire, and those shares form the index funds.

Don't know. This idea will never happen. It was just fun to kill 10 minutes thinking about it.

Edit to add some words I omitted.

In practice, since we have Christmas and Christmas Eve, and there is only one of each, we would probably never have need to say it. [–]theFriendlyDoomer 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

We say the fourth of July. Because we've added the article, we default back to the normal grammar in our shared language of putting the an adjective before a noun. Makes you wonder why we otherwise have the calendar convention -- but it is what it is. If you look at a calendar, a date is something you can literally point to. So it is easy for our brain to treat it as a noun -- or rather the combination of this fact and the cultural conditioning that is having a language makes us used to parsing it that way. But the holiday itself, is not the calendar item. So it's either "the July 4th holiday" or "the 4th of July" -- and people are almost always going to take the easier route.

Just thinking about how we use it, we mainly flex into calling it the 4th of July when we are talking about it in the capacity of a holiday. An American putting it on the calendar could say something like "what are our plans for July 4th?"

Contrast this with when we talk about it as a holiday, like "what is your favorite food for the fourth of July?"

I just don't think there is enough content yet for that to be possible. You can test that by clicking "new" instead of the default "hot," doing so you can get a feel for what is posted (at least that which is allowed to flow into "all" -- there are other subs that exist, here mostly for people a little more on the extreme side, politically).

Many of the active subs only have a few posts a day.

Well, update two days later.

It looks like s/TIL is on fire and s/asksaidit is pretty good place as well -- it'll always have at least a few political questions and stuff about the Reddit wars, but now it has a few other things going. I'll just check it every day, and if looks like it has a lull, I'll pitch in a question. . . It looks like s/aww has enough for a once a day check, so you've down well to get the log rolling. I feel like this wave of new users has been a success.

Other than that, when my two weeks is up I'll be start setting up some subs.

I hope you succeed. Success here is probably going to be a matter of quality rather than quantity. If you find a few people you click with and provide on a semi-regular basis, that would be a huge win.

I will not do it again for you, and then again in 6 months for somebody else, and so on. Whoever has enough interest in the question will likely do the same and report the results, agreeing with me.

I can at least relate to that. But also that's what's downright silly about your "prove me wrong." I, too, don't want to re-hash stuff forever.

Since you don't care about the question, why are you posting about it? You know?

Read the thread again. The context was what I didn't like about a site. Later on, when someone else asked me to expand, I wrote that the main problem is making a claim without links or explaining methodology. The person who makes a claim has the burden of proof. If you check my history here or Reddit you'll see that I am rarely a person making a post that is a claim. But when I do, I show my homework. When I don't want to have the discussion, I don't start it. For example, here's me writing against Eugenics.. It has links, it has footnotes, a large quote from a book.

If I'm wrong, at least people can check up on how I came to my conclusions. They don't just have to take my word for it. (And they certainly shouldn't just take my word for it in a Karma-farming environment).

It is, but with some twists. Here's our sidebar

If you're cursed to live in interesting times, you might as well notice the interesting stuff. . . Doom for people who don't actually hate people . . . Check out the writings and explorations of Ran Prieur at http://www.ranprieur.com/

Basically, most people on the sub think that collapse is happening, but it won't go down the way most people imagine. I think that the super-wealthy are going to be able to keep and expand sci-fi like technologies while leaving the rest of us in the dust.

It looks like Ran Prieur is going to be sucked up by current politics and then the election, so it might be a while before he's back on his game, but he thinks a lot about the future.

Other than that, we have a regular poster who is trying to show what the future of agriculture will need to be like if we can't get our hands on cheap oil, and several people contribute links about technologies, urban development, and even how-to on local crafts and trades. It's a place for weirdos, many of them a bit left-leaning (and many too far disenchanted with political authority to correctly be called left or right), but not much woke-scolding.

Haha. I tend to agree, though I think our analysis as to why might differ in some places.

I was really close to my grandfather who was of the silent generation. And being around a person of such character really shows me what's wrong with these "fuck your feelings" dudes. There was once people who lived by "fuck my feelings" and tried to make life better for others. Granted, he was New Deal Democrat, but the dude was tough, always available to help, and really positive and constructive. The idea of harassing strangers or looking for a forum to whine about his life and changes around him would never occur to him.

Also tied into the post-WWII changes are 1) car culture 2) the explosion suburbs 3) the nuclear family. . . There are all sorts of men who want to be little dictators of a nuclear family, but they wouldn't want to be part of an extended family, where grandma and grandpa, siblings and cousins, lived near by (or upstairs) and expressed opinions on parenting and performed other acts of social regulation. What we have is a consumerism-driven isolation of people, moving toward the direction of more dependence on the system.

But since you do, can you provide me with the part you are sure of?

I take it you are to talking about me doubting the claim that 99% of porn is posted by Jews. If you are asking something else, let me know.

First of all, when people are concerned about the truth, they are open about their method of coming up with their facts. This means linking to an article or study, sharing how you came up with your data, something like that. When people are allowed to just karma farm by saying things they know their audience wants to hear, they'll abandon the hard work of being transparent. They'll even just make stuff up. On Voat, since no one doubted the claim, it's clear that we're not dealing with an environment where people feel comfortable asking someone to back it up. It's clear what the audience wants to believe. So, yeah, the burden of proof is on a person making a claim.

But showing this is false is a simple matter of either math or common sense. Are you going to pretend you've never heard of a white person with a pornography problem, past or present? I've seen Christian help groups for the problem -- look, here's some White Mormons talking about it, and here's another white guy. . .. Jews are less than 1% of the world's population. So even though it is known white people look at porn, even some Christian White people, and even though there are other races with larger populations than Jews, Black, Latino, Asian, you still think Jews are 99 times more likely than anyone else to post porn?

Edit: I had the wrong quote above.
