(It's fake. Teachers also don't bother with 3-part explanations. It's right or wrong, with no commentary. Another argument - were this real - is that it took 10 minutes to measure and cut the board into 2/3rds and 1/3rd, and 5 minutes more to make the second cut because another measurement was not required; the 2nd line was already marked on the board. )

It's just a really bad example. Whomever wrote the problem wasn't thinking so the answer is rediculous in real life.

This is a basic "rate of work" sort of problem. In this case it takes 10 minutes to make two widgets. How long would it take to make three widgets. Divide 10 by two to get the time to make one widget, then multiply by three to get 15.

If you are doing actual cutting on a board the answer is 20 minutes since you need to make two cuts instead of one. It's just a crap word problem.

This can be expressed as 2 pieces/ 10 minutes or 10 minutes/ 2 pieces.

Question asks for time. Question gives you number of pieces.

You use the appropriate fractional expression to cancel out the units (number of pieces) to yield the appropriate unit (time)

So it is written as 3 pieces x 10 minutes/2 pieces. Cancel out like units, divide 10 by 2 to cancel out the 2. You are left with 3 x 5 minutes.

This equals 15 minutes.
