I can't conceive of any way to make 15 min math work.

15 mins is impossible for 3 without reducing the thickness of the boards.

(It's fake. Teachers also don't bother with 3-part explanations. It's right or wrong, with no commentary. Another argument - were this real - is that it took 10 minutes to measure and cut the board into 2/3rds and 1/3rd, and 5 minutes more to make the second cut because another measurement was not required; the 2nd line was already marked on the board. )

The second board was made out of ice. Therefore, calculus was needed due to the melting of the ice making the board thinner during the time it took her to cut it.

It's just a really bad example. Whomever wrote the problem wasn't thinking so the answer is rediculous in real life.

This is a basic "rate of work" sort of problem. In this case it takes 10 minutes to make two widgets. How long would it take to make three widgets. Divide 10 by two to get the time to make one widget, then multiply by three to get 15.

If you are doing actual cutting on a board the answer is 20 minutes since you need to make two cuts instead of one. It's just a crap word problem.

You're correct. This is a rate of work problem, and the process bottleneck is the 10 min cutting operation.

The teacher deserves 2 boards; one half cut.

And a pay cut.
