< a clear-eyed examination of 21st century parenthood.>

WTF does that mean? An era where we don't accept children for who they are? The father basically kidnaps his daughter because he wants her to be a boy? The daughter can't live as her "authentic self" unless you lie about her sex??? Guess what, a girl can climb trees, play in the mud, have short hair, get into fist fights, collect bugs, whatever else and still be a girl.

Anyone who thinks "My daughter doesn't like to wear dresses. She needs hormone blockers!" has failed as a parent.

I just don't understand it. How did society come to this? 20 years ago, she would have been a perfectly normal tomboy.

I don't believe for a second this 10 year old girl has expressed hatred for her vagina or her female body in general. I'd be surprised if she were ever suicidal over being a girl. What the hell is driving this? She's a fucking baby, and her parents have decided she's a boy. The plot of the movie is also screwed up because in real life, 99% of kids would never get transitioned if their moms weren't driving the bus. This movie is portraying the father as a pro-trans "hero" when in real life he'd be the parent least likely to give a shit about any of this. The dads in these families are either oblivious or homophobic. The moms are the ones trying to score "woke" points or in some cases have more sinister motivations.

Totally about the MOM being the culprit, not dad. Are they trying to imply that this is a birth defect, being "born in the wrong body"? In which case, surely this birth defect has been going on for centuries, so hundreds of thousands of people throughout history must have had to suffer in the "wrong body" and been suicidal and miserable. Yet recorded history does NOT reflect that. This seems to be a very recent "birth defect" --- I'd be more concerned about identifying chemicals in the food and water supply than how to lop healthy body parts off.

I do believe sex and genital dysphoria exists, but it's incredibly rare in prepubescent children, especially in female children. We live in an upside down world where any girl who wants to be a boy or who "feels like" a boy is being helped to transition, even if she has zero distress over her body and her sexed characteristics.

It especially disturbs me as a GNC adult woman. I was an extremely GNC child. The kind who seemingly came out of the womb masculine and refused all female clothing and haircuts by age 5. I never felt like a girl. That didn't make me male! I was still a girl, just like this little girl is a girl, no matter what she's been taught to believe about herself.

If this is a true phenomenon, then where were all the prepubescent trans boys in the 70s, 80s, and 90s? Why are they confined almost completely to present day upper-middle class white girls in North America and Western Europe? It's just so obvious this is the result of socialization, not anything inherent in these children.

I do believe sex and genital dysphoria exists,

Just want to point out that neither sex nor genital dysphoria are requirements to obtain a clinical diagnosis of "gender dysphoria" in childhood or adolescence & adulthood. "Gender dysphoria" is the term clinicians & the public use today. The clinical criteria for a diagnosis of "gender dysphoria" do not require that a person be unhappy with, or in any way distressed by, one's sex or genitals. All that's required is a desire/preference for the sex stereotyped toys, games, clothing, grooming standards, roles usually associated with the opposite sex.

[–]worried19[S] 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

Yeah, that's the problem. It's all based on stereotypes, like toy preferences, clothing preferences, and who the child wants to play with.

Under their guidelines, I would have been a trans child. I had at least 6 of the required social symptoms. The only symptoms that should even be remotely taken into account are feelings about the sexed body, specifically genitalia. I doubt you'd find many 10 year old girls who hate their vaginas. To be honest, I doubt the vast majority of elementary school kids even know where it is. I didn't have awareness at that age.

[–]MarkTwainiac 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Yes, prior to menarche, most girls are naturally aware they have vulvas - though many don't know the name - but not necessarily that they have vaginas. As a result, they are unlikely to hate their vaginas since they don't know they exist. Exceptions, of course, are a) girls who've been sexually abused in a way that involved vaginal penetration; and/or b) girls who've gotten comprehensive sex education prior to menarche. Though as someone who had the latter, I don't see why this would lead to unhappiness or distress; learning about the female ability to conceive, gestate, birth, nourish & immunize new human beings only increased the self-esteem of me & my peers.

I think it's important to note & emphasize that all these supposedly "trans kids" today suffer from "gender dysphoria," which in most cases is just dissatisfaction with the clothes, toys, playmates, grooming standards & roles typically associated with the most rigid stereotypes of one's sex. These are not kids distressed over their genitals or sex characteristics - things which they are only dimly aware of, or not aware of at all.

It just upsets me more and more the longer I think about it. And yet it seems so under discussed. Even on GC, most of the discussion is about trans women. To be honest, what's happening to gender nonconforming girls is far more alarming to me than anything trans women are doing. We're talking about the lives of these little girls. And little boys, the boys are being medicalized too.

This is medical experimentation on children, and no one is allowed to question it without being labeled "the enemy." Even saying you don't feel like a middle school kid should be put on hormones is forbidden now. I feel like this should be a much bigger deal than it is. J.K. Rowling touched briefly on the topic, but I feel like almost no one is aware of what's happening to even the youngest of children. I hope there's a high-profile detransition sometime soon to call the public's attention to it.

I cannot wait for the lawsuit era.

The world's insane.

Insane for sure.

The lawsuit era will come too late to save this child.

Apparently, 21st century parenthood means parents fighting each other, not coming to a concensus, not considering the health and well-being of your children, kidnapping them and running from the law. Sounds great :[

The mom is the villain, the dad is the hero, and no doubt the law enforcement officer will be "converted" by the so-called bravery of this man.

I used to really like Ann Dowd and Steve Zahn as actors too. Sad to see them taking roles in a movie promoting this regressive ideology and the child abuse being done in its name.

Someone should give them pushback on this. Some feminist group should be speaking out and calling out people in Hollywood for what they're doing.

The truly sad part is that even if this movie is pure shit(trans stuff aside), not one critic will dare say so b/c no matter how accurate his/her review of the film's flaws, that critic would be dragged by the TRA's as being a phobe, and probably never work again.

[–]worried19[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

They sure as hell wouldn't criticize the topic of child transition. We need to have people calling it out. There need to be feminist groups speaking up when the media is portraying transitioning children as a good thing. First Netflix puts a trans child on, now this movie. The kids are getting younger and younger, and still the average person has no idea of what is happening.

[–]meranii 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

We can't change it because the TRAs managed to set the tone of public discourse before the average person really gave a thought to the possible consequences of "it's natural for a child to be trans because of their hobbies/preference in clothes". Everyone thinks this is the new progressive milestone and "we don't want to be on the wrong side of history". Once the shitloads of horrorstories of deeply disturbed adults who were transitioned as kids and young teens come pouring in, then maybe the public will wise up. It is so obviously abuse. But TRAs will definitely try to suppress that too.

Does the average person understand that this child's puberty will be halted and she will be sterilized? I don't think the general public knows that. They think this is about clothes and hair. They don't realize that medical things are being done to kids in middle and elementary school. If they knew, I can't believe they would support it.

NEWSFLASH: Man does what men have been doing for hundreds of years, absent a male heir; doesn’t know why he felt better relating to his daughter when he thought of her as a boy, but insists it “just felt right”.

Your link leads to a 404. What happened to this girl is depressing and I hate to say it, but I'm unsurprised.

[–]worried19[S] 9 insightful - 1 fun9 insightful - 0 fun10 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

The link is working for me?

I can't say I'm surprised, just depressed. The mom in the movie is no doubt being portrayed as an evil villain for acknowledging her daughter as a girl.
