Potatoes; Not the answer you wanted:

Protein quality: Potatoes have a low protein content (1–1.5% of fresh weight), but the quality of potato protein is very good. The biological value of potato protein is between 90 and 100, which is higher than that of soybeans (84) and legumes (73).

Legumes contain high amounts of lectins. Peanuts are legumes.

  • Digestive Issues: Active legume lectins can bind to the cells lining the digestive tract, potentially disrupting the breakdown and absorption of nutrients. This interference with normal digestive processes may result in bloating, gas, stomach upset, and diarrhea.

  • Mineral Absorption Interference: Legume lectins have been found to interfere with the absorption of essential minerals such as calcium, iron, phosphorus, and zinc. This interference can prevent the body from effectively utilizing these important nutrients.

  • Autoimmune Response: Prolonged exposure to lectins that bind to cells for extended periods may trigger an autoimmune response in some individuals. This immune system reaction could potentially contribute to inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and type 1 diabetes.

  • Malnutrition Risk: In cases where legume lectins hinder the absorption of vital nutrients like minerals or disrupt normal digestion, there is a risk of malnutrition over time if these effects are not addressed or compensated for through dietary adjustments.

  • Gastrointestinal Discomfort: Consumption of high levels of active legume lectins, especially from raw or undercooked legumes, can cause gastrointestinal discomfort such as nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.

  • Inflammatory Conditions: While not conclusively proven in scientific studies yet, some theories suggest that lectins may play a role in promoting inflammation within the body, potentially contributing to chronic inflammatory conditions.

Legumes are an excellent source of plant-based protein for several reasons:

Legumes are high in protein. A single cup of cooked beans, lentils, or peas contains around 15 grams of protein[2], which is nearly a quarter of the daily protein requirement for an average adult. This makes legumes one of the most protein-dense plant foods.

Legumes contain all the essential amino acids. While they are considered "incomplete" proteins because they lack sufficient amounts of certain amino acids like methionine and cystine, this can be easily remedied by combining legumes with other incomplete proteins like grains[1]. This complementary pairing creates a complete protein profile.

Legumes are a sustainable protein source. When legume plants die, the nitrogen in their amino acids is released back into the soil, serving as a natural fertilizer for future crops[5]. This makes legumes an environmentally-friendly protein compared to animal-based sources.

Legumes provide additional health benefits. Beyond just protein, legumes are rich in fiber, complex carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals[2][3][4]. Studies show that regularly consuming legumes can help lower cholesterol, control blood sugar, and reduce the risk of chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease.

In summary, legumes are an optimal plant-based protein due to their high protein content, complete amino acid profile when combined with other foods, sustainability, and additional nutritional benefits[1][2][3][4][5].

My parents have a singular serrano plant left but it's a very productive plant, we have a hard time using up the harvests, and it's been alive at least three years now.

I have a serrano plant that's even older, but it's a tiny bonsai like plant. It's got 7 peppers and that's yuuuge for it.

And I'm trying to replace my Filipino pepper plant. That one must have been six years old before it died. That was sad, I loved that plant, but they live 3-9 years so I guess it was just its time. I don't know if this was normal but before it perished it did start putting out way more peppers than usual. A last gasp chance at propagating offspring perhaps.

So, they will eventually die, but you can definitely keep the same plants going for years.

I have read suggestions about pruning them way back before overwintering but I've never done it. And we don't exactly have proper winters.

They all come from the same plant. This is that original one now. Five nodes fell off the top. Of those one was non-viable and one became a snack for my niece's dog. So there's the original plant and three of its nodes still going as their own cacti.

The picture in this post is one of those node offspring.

Did Bread or Beer Create Civilization? by ruperttaylor in Foodfun

[–]HugodeCrevellier 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Writing, which is an essential aspect of civilization, was indeed invented by the Sumerians well before 5th century BC Greece.

However, in terms of governance, the Persians and everybody else used the same system (government by some 'Alpha male', with perhaps some subservient allies) most commonly used in apes, including non-human ones, like chimps and gorillas.

Most peoples' instincts draw them to this so strongly that they'll invent some imaginary eternal alpha-male dictator/emperor/king/warlord/lord-deity to worship, lest, god forbid, they should find themselves without one.

What the Greek miracle achieved is to invent (besides philosophy/science, the Logos/logic, reason over superstition, medicine, etc.) politics, Democracy and everything else we consider truly civilized.

Basically, that you're not, today, the subservient bitch of some warlord or rabbinate (claiming to speak for some invisible supreme warlord in the sky) is thanks to some great thinkers in 5th century BC Greece.

But both existed many hundreds of years after the original civilisations.

Thanks. I still don't think that's what's going on here. I don't think the author was attributing any one person with brilliance due to bread or beer, just making the case as to which one really lead the charge to societal evolution. I'd say simply moving from hunter-gatherer to an agrarian society was the biggest factor. Being able to grow and store crops allowed humanity to have more time for other pursuits like education, technology, economics, etc. If we were still tromping around the woods for our next meal every day, there's not much room to ponder anything or even plan for much else but the next empty stomach.

I like Jarod Diamond's Guns Germs and Steel. Just considering what was the biggest factor in holding back the Papua New Guineans from evolving past the stone age we can see that it's the lack of arable land and staple crops. I don't think it's really about bread or bear, but agriculture in general that pushed us to a new level.

There's a tendency to dismiss the creative brilliance of a group of people and to instead assign their brilliance to economic factors:

Materialist conception of history

Inspired by Enlightenment thinkers, especially Condorcet, the utopian socialist Henri de Saint-Simon (1760–1825) formulated his own materialist interpretation of history, similar to those later used in Marxism, analyzing historical epochs based on their level of technology and organization and dividing them between eras of slavery, serfdom, and finally wage labor. According to the socialist leader Jean Jaurès, the French writer Antoine Barnave was the first to develop the theory that economic forces were the driving factors in history.

I guess that both are nutritional in similar ways (carbs), and both bring people together. Do we really need to know which was first in this scenario? They both come from a move from hunter/gatherer to agrarian. Both have their part to play. I do prefer beer though.

I agree that the color of the blossoms is cheerful. But that's how weeds are: they look attractive but make no good fruit, and can cause harm, as with poison, sharp barbs, or thorns. Isn't that like a prostitute? They could look appealing to the senses, but leave the man who gets too close to her flowers with an STD, lost money, and shame.

I've seen those, I didn't know they were an agricultural nightmare. I think they're pretty.

thistle should be reported, and detailed recommendations for reporting invasive species are provided by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

The authorities in Mn apparently want people to narc on the plant.

The pictures here are of a specific weed called Canada thistle but this plant is found in other countries besides Canada, including the United States. I'm learning that "approximately 200 species of thistle have been identified." +

There is even one named Musk thistle. How about that /u/Musky ? It's "unpalatable to livestock". But the butterflies and pollinators may like its blossoms.

The reason why men marry some women and not others by jet199 in Relationships

[–]chadwickofwv 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

The major reason men are not getting married is that marriage is an extremely raw deal for men. After you get married she can leave for any, or no reason. She can take the kids, house, car, bank account, and most of your future earnings for the rest of your life. She, on the other hand, has no obligation to you at all. I have watched this happen over and over again, and I could count the number of successful marriages I know of from my generation on a single hand. In fact, I can't think of any off the top of my head.

Yes. You are too young to be so serious about a "relationship." Go out and have some fun and work on you. Then look for someone to share your life with.

BEST DREAM CAKE IN UAE by hive in Food

[–]hive[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

A torte is a type of rich and multilayered cake that is often associated with European culinary traditions. It is typically made with ground nuts (such as almonds or hazelnuts), breadcrumbs, or flour, and is often layered with rich fillings like fruit preserves, chocolate ganache, or buttercream. Torte cakes are known for their dense and moist texture, and they are often enjoyed on special occasions or celebrations.

As for traditional cakes in the UAE, Emirati cuisine is diverse and influenced by various cultures, so there may not be a specific "UAE torte cake" in the way it is commonly understood. However, the region is known for its delicious sweets and desserts, such as baklava, kunafa, and various types of dates and date-based sweets. Emirati desserts often feature flavors like rose water, saffron, cardamom, and pistachios, creating a unique and aromatic taste.

If there have been specific developments or creations in the world of UAE cakes or tortes after January 2022, I recommend checking with local bakeries or culinary sources for the most up-to-date information and descriptions.
