They don't voice any criticism, however gentle, because their accounts will be banned.

Letter in Harper magazine calling for open debate (signed by JKR amongst others) by endthewoo in GenderCritical

Also ignores the fact that only powerful people can sign this letter, and many artists, writers, and academics who are less well-situated would be afraid to. Those who are proactively suppressing their point of view for fear of reprisal are invisible. Self-censorship is still censorship, when it is coerced.

I know a woman who teaches high school biology and who constantly emphasizes (and exaggerates) her credentials. Yet, instead of being fact-based, she frequently makes nonsensical remarks about sex being a spectrum and pretends that those who would argue otherwise are ignorant and hateful. Perhaps she defines spectrum differently than I do, but I find it frustrating that she promotes herself as an authority on biological matters while making illogical and unsupported remarks about sex. I have a number of friends who have science degrees, up to and including doctoral degrees, and they universally claim that our current understanding of transgenderism is evidence-based and that anyone who demurs is irrational.

The irony is painful.

Unfortunately, the harassment of writers has been going on for a while, particularly in YA fiction.

I'm not saying writers shouldn't face criticism, but this is more akin to harassment and silencing. Twitter mobs with no understanding of how literature and fiction work are trying to get books "cancelled" because they misunderstand them or dislike the subject matter. Usually they haven't even read the book.

It's a chilling environment for writers who explore difficult or complex themes. Nuance and ambiguity are necessary aspects of literature. How many great works of literature or even compelling books meet any kind of current standard for political correctness?

It seems female writers get harassed more and face more pressure to comply with the harassers. Naturally.

I agree. My views have stayed the same over the last decade while the "discourse" has drastically changed. I've always thought gender non-conforming people should be protected, that transsexuals should be treated as their assumed sex, and that questioning people should be properly supported. But I've also recognized the biological basis of womanhood, and I refuse to conflate male and female in spaces in which the female sex is vulnerable.

A decade ago, I did not know anyone who called themselves transgender. Limiting my social circle only to those I also knew ten years ago, I now know 4 middle-aged MTT, 3 childhood transitioners (MTT, FTT, FTT), and 2 adult FTT.

I don't even remember how I stumbled on GenderCritical, GenderTrender, or even the internet writings of some old-school transexuals who were critical of the current iteration of transgenderism. It was so long ago GenderCritical had only 3000-ish subscribers. I've always been a very live and let live person. If transgender activists hadn't started pushing at and lying about women constantly, maybe I wouldn't have wasted my critical energies on them. Beyond that, I have always balanced my readings by going to directly to forums for transgender people and reading what they were posting, as well as reading articles written by trans activists. It's insane that people like me are accused of being narrow-minded when I remain open to hearing all perspectives, unlike those who use the thought-terminating cliche TERF.
