Looks like you've been away for a while. Yeah, welcome to 2023.

It's been a while since I wore earrings.

Gold jewelry can be tricky. 24K is soft enough that it may be hard to keep sterile. A lot of gold jewelry might just be gold plated, and the plating will eventually wear off. 14/18K gold jewelry might be harder. It's also going to be some copper or nickel alloy. The copper can oxidize, and turn your skin green.

If I were going with new piercing. I would use surgical stainless steel until the piercing was healed. Then you can play a little more fast and loose with different jewelry materials.

24 is hard to keep sterile because you can scratch it by looking at it funny! I think 14 or 18 karat is probably best personally, just mind what it's mixed with to make the alloy. There's always at least a little nickel in stainless. The other alternative is titanium but meh. I like gold.

[–]Vulptex 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (7 children)

It used to work like a charm.

not just in terms of the quality of the results, but, like, they actually seemed to try to be good to the user? was it always a facade? is this just what happens when companies get big? was it sinister from the start?

[–]LordoftheFlies 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (2 children)

is this just what happens when companies get big

^

[–]panel30 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

The more people you get "peter principle" promotions, the more chances the Good Idea fairy has to come and mess you up

Their slogan used to be "Don't be evil".

That is no longer their slogan.

[–]panel30 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

what happened?

[–]Alienhunter 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

They got evil.

Like you seriously think you can trust a company with it's slogan "don't be evil" to not be evil?

[–]WoodyWoodPeckerHah he he he hah! 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Back before Alphabet when Google had a don't do evil slogan it was. Now it is ads all the way down.

Google changed their algorithm and add results at some point. Around the time Facebook YouTube and all the other big tech giants messed with their feeds recommendations and algorithms as well. Wanna say it was 2015 or so? Perhaps later they've "improved" on them since.

The goal is to maximize engagement, that means how long you stare at the screen. How much you click on stuff. How often you comment. Then they tailor feed the content to you to maximize that engagement while also selling targeted add space to interested parties.

It works quite well. That's why you see a ramp up of culture war content. The AI figured out that more crazy stuff drives engagement. Why you saw shit like flat earth go mainstream. Not because it's a popular position. But because it's stupid and everyone wants to talk about it, mostly to laugh at it, and the rabbid followers churn out loads of content to feed the machine.

Well Google is basically the Big Corporation trying to swallow the Internet...

[–]iamonlyoneman[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

In fairness to google, all corporations would like to corner their markets tho

I think Google assumes people searching for your term are in a "buyers" mindset?

[–]iamonlyoneman[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

apparently

[–]Bonn1770 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Try this: gold hoop for "healing cartilage" piercing You'll still get ads but top result is what you were looking for.

[–]dissidentrhetoric 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Google search results basically mainstream shit only now. I have a browser addon that removes websites from youtube search and I the one I had for google search stopped working.

[–]DefinitelyNotAnAgent 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

It's how google indexs websites with merchant services. And the fact some of those are on the front page are because the website has good content, that's not actually controlled by google.

"I am researching a writing assignment and I wanted to find out of a gold hoop earing...."

Who are you writing for? Lol... I got my ear pierced twice in the 3rd grade. They tell you how to properly care for it and give you a solution to use. This shit is common knowledge.

Did you pierce your ear yourself??

[–]iamonlyoneman[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Catch me with any piercings LOL thats why I needed to do research for the assignment. I only knew "don't touch it without washing your hands"!

Google bans me from everything. I'm a truth telling teddy bear but I break community standards? I'm socially unskilled.

[–]smsfree 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

i have this 'always feel lucky' plugin that redirects me to the first search result on google without the need to click it

when i have a lot of searches, google starts to ask me to click many, many images to prove i'm a human being

so i switched to duckduckgo for a bit, and then in less than a minute google lets me search again

life is wonderful ain't it

[–]iamonlyoneman[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)
