unsolicited opinion

I solicited your opinion! Thank you for sharing it.

I don't understand a whole lot about math right now, but I think maybe I understand a little bit about what you're trying to explain. That changing the way these concepts are taught could help interested students learn them better. Maybe if somebody else with a background in math education reads this later they will be able to understand better. Or maybe I'll understand better later if I look back on this after exploring math more at some point, if I do that.

I wanted to understand why you feel this would be so valuable. Could stop a lot of wars from happening sounds really good! Unless I misunderstood what you meant. I think I don't have a good grasp of how math stuff generally can be a big help.

I think this topic is interesting, more thoughts, for anyone who wants to read I guess.

is it related to what you care about and your motivations for things? saving someone from a burning building because you want them to be ok, vs because you want to look good? this reminds me of how people recommend against "rewarding" people for something they do naturally anyway for intrinsic motivation reasons. that it's better to just let people do it for the intrinsic reason without trying to mess with it like that.

Thank you for coming back to reply, it was really nice of you to!

I don't feel like I really understand a whole lot about math stuff. I wasn't taught about calculus stuff until high school and college. I was taught some but I don't think I understand a whole lot, like what it means, what it's useful for. I think I understand maybe basic stuff, like how long a package of food will last if I eat a certain amount per day. I think it maybe makes more sense to me if I understand it on a more practical level, like I understand what I'm trying to use the numbers to help me with.

I tried to find a wiki article for integration, is this the concept you mean? It has a section that looks like it's about how this concept can be useful. Maybe sadly, I don't think I've ever tried to use something like this outside of a math classroom. It sounds like this concept seems really valuable though. What makes it so valuable? If it can contribute to avoiding wars that sounds like something good to understand if possible.

there are a lot of these crimes against children posts on here lately, maybe we can make some progress on this, teaching children effective self-defense, making their environment safer with fewer predators, helping people who are at risk for getting involved in this kind of criminal lifestyle. [–]panel30 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

some thoughts (not being particularly careful here, just musing, but maybe there's something helpful in here):

  • a lot of things we think of as moral are also just good ideas. hygiene keeps you from getting sick. helping the people around you helps keep the group healthy and safe generally. being able to work effectively with others is a huge benefit. norms where the social environment is safer from attack from other humans benefit you. etc. there's research about altruism in non-human social groups and how it works and how it may have developed.

  • why not just pretend?: keeping up a deception is difficult especially over time. maybe easier to just actually be moral.

  • human retaliation and mimicry. if people see you do it they might do it back, or just try it out themselves.

Also, these books might have some related content, I happened upon them recently when looking for content about another (maybe related) topic. If they seem relevant, you can check the content at no charge on openlibrary.org or maybe your local public library:

  • Altruism: The Power of Compassion by Matthieu Ricard. Sortof a scientific-ish approach discussing some topics related to altruism. Author seems to have a background in genetics science and also in Buddhist spiritual teachings.

  • Capitalizing on Kindness by Kristin Tillquist. Being kind is compatible with and helpful for success in business.

  • Maybe: The Power of Kindness: The Unexpected Benefits of Leading a Compassionate Life by Piero Ferrucci. Discusses some different aspects of kindness and related topics.

why do people become shills etc? by panel30 in whatever

[–]panel30[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I really did not mean to trigger a degeneration of the conversation, I was actually trying to avoid it by leaving my own views out of it and talking about why anyone with any ideology might promote their views forcefully, and be called a 'shill'.

Oh. That's nice to know.

this site maybe has 100 regular users total, and most of them don't change their minds easily, which is why 90% of this site is here, because reddit banned them for views plenty of people tried to talk them out of.

huh, fair point. I hadn't recognized that but it makes sense.

Personally, I'm not sure why there would be any real paid shills on Saidit

yeah. I'm not sure what I would expect, I don't know whether it would be surprising or not to see someone on here. There are definitely unambiguous spammers though, even with a small audience, so that's something. I'm not sure where which kinds tend to go.

It's ok to use whatever language is natural for you, I didn't mean to say you can't use "true believer"! Please don't feel like you need to censor yourself. It can have an anti-Christian connotation to some, so if that wasn't intended yeah I guess maybe a different way of putting it can be useful, but I don't want to start language and opinion policing on saidit. It's ok to have different perspectives on something.

I feel a little bad for trying to convince people of stuff in that way in the past. It's good to recognize when things are important, I'm grateful for all the people who've worked so hard re protecting free speech etc, for example. I'm glad there are other people on a site like this who are contributing to the space where people can discuss more freely. I just think maybe it wasn't great of me to push it on people, and for making it about "us" vs "them" kinda. Or about how I'm right. Sometimes it's felt good to me to just try to win a little fight, but, I don't really think that's productive. Back when I was on saidit before I did a lot of that and I'm sad now to have spread that around. I don't know quite how to clean it up if I did contribute to a negative atmosphere, though I've tried to some. Maybe that's part of why this topic interests me right now in a more broad sense than literal paid shills. I guess maybe I hope I can recognize that something is important or true without making it like that.

Hm. Thanks. I don't know much about the FreeBSD or the community so it's interesting to hear some perspective on it. I haven't started trying alt stuff for phone so I might do that at some point, it's nice to know it's out there. The OS I have now sends me ads and I don't like it. And I'd like to be able to customize it a lot more. And just know what it's doing.

For the split, I don't know exactly, it was a guy's conference on BSD. But I doubt it was about dragonfly, it seem like someone who has been removed because he became too much trouble.

Hm ok. I had heard that the DragonFly person split because he was committing too much or something, it was too big a change and there wasn't time for others to review the code, he was too prolific. So he just made his own project. I heard it was fairly amicable considering. But I don't remember exactly, I'm sure it's all documented more accurately somewhere.

If you're not doing anything against anyone here then that's fine, people will figure it out, it's ok. I'm not trying to claim you are I just don't want to be taken for a ride either, y'know? Everyone here can surely relate to that for goodness sakes

What you said about "true believers" not needing to be compensated because they just believe in the cause makes sense. I've done it. It's a good way to put it. People have used that term in the context of cults too.

I know I put "religion" in OP as a category so maybe it was natural to mention Christians. Islam or another religion could have been the example. If it was just an honest comment then this is what I mean about the casual anti-christian thing. People don't tend to talk this way about Islam or Orthodox Judaism or whatever other kinds of things, it's usually Christians people talk about this way. I don't really like this. Certainly Christianity should be open to criticism like anything, but for people in a culture where it's something that's from their culture to morally guide them, it's not healthy to try to turn them away especially from the good parts.

"True believer" in this context I guess did sound a little negative, "one who's finally seen the light" or "enlightened" or "savvy enough to not have gotten vaxxed" would eg sound a bit more positive.

If you didn't mean anything by it don't worry, you're entitled to your opinion, you don't need to sugar coat it or state it differently than you think it, it's fine. I've enjoyed a lot of your posts. If you're not being nice and do have an agenda well that's ok too you can maybe work on being nicer to others as you're able to.

Idk what to think man. People have to draw their own conclusions right? It's confusing enough out there? You can talk to who you want on here I wouldn't want you to do something you don't want to do. I have enjoyed talking to you on here either way, you've shared helpful and interesting stuff.

I have to be free to make up my own mind about things as best I can, same as anyone, same as you? If you're just honestly sharing your opinion about things you're definitely not doing anything wrong. It's not strange that people would occasionally be concerned about alterior motives of one another on a site like this, that's not doing anything wrong either.

When the antivax stuff started going into the conservative channels I thought it was a disinfo ploy to try to make conservatives get sick with covid. And that it was stupid unnecessary politicization, "well the dems say take the vax well then we're gonna say don't take it". And the stuff I saw was so fearmongery. That makes sense, yeah. And about ideological purity... I've definitely experienced that.

By "regular person" I think I was trying to get at like... whatever it is to not be a shill. "Honest" maybe? It's good to be aware of people doing questionable things. Maybe like crime. You can be aware of the schemes without having to use them yourself. And it's better to be aware. But it's not good to do them.

I feel like I've been sortof a shill in the past for some things, I wanted to convince people of things. And maybe now it sorta seems not nice of me to do things that way. Like there's a better way maybe to just share information without feeling like I have to "win someone over to my side" in that way.

Is honkongphooey jewish?

I don't like the casual undermining of Christianity that I've seen in general in some places. Even if there are things that can be criticized it's not really a nice thing to try to undermine someone's cultural spiritual practices. There are at least a lot of positive things about Christianity, including missionary work, goodness knows there are times I wished a missionary would come find and help me when I've been involved in questionable things and needing help. That said, it's also important that it's ok to criticize in an open forum too.

maybe there's a better term for this sort of phenomenon in the domain of politics, consumer products, etc, than "true believer," which has religious connotations.

Maybe for politics "useful idiot", that also implies the "shill" doesn't know the real agenda. With drugs you can have a "pusher" though that implies nefarious motives. I guess "shill" is the one that came from commercial products. Marketing, recruiting, seduction. Idk.

I guess I don't know what to conclude re hongkongphooey based on this post alone. If he is doing that, well, that's not very nice and I hope he can find some ways to be nicer to others. And if he's not well that's great.

I have seen guides for shills or disinformation agents or whathaveyou in general, but I haven't seen a guide for spotting specifically jewish style disinformation. I don't know if such a thing would be useful or not.

somehow fox seems more like "the real world" than reddit. people I know who don't tend to dig around on internet forums watch fox. maybe that's silly but it feels like it makes our efforts seem more real or something. that's pretty cool they got interviewed.

(in fact, I think there's already be someone who was very good in freeBSD dev but also turned out to make trouble and tried to claim ownership or something like that).

I head heard a little bit about the split where DragonFly BSD was created, is that what you mean here? Or was this something different?

Yeah I like how open source means anyone can do what they want with it pretty much, and it's a good reminder that anyone can take the software in the direction they want to, it doesn't have to be with some particular development community if their style doesn't suit me.

I don't mind an expectation to be polite to others, but I would prefer something like "be polite and stay on-topic". Even though I can start my own dev group it would also be nice to find existing projects that don't have this kind of stuff in the code of conduct etc, if they are out there. Though it's possible starting my own group would be easier.

What makes freebsd a good alternative lately?

Read the room and make your own decision about how much you want to reveal.

I'm in the US in a moderate locale (there are a good portion of both conservative and liberal people around here). It's a little hard for me to "read the room" 'cause I've been burying my head in the sand regarding a lot of current politics and events. I was hoping someone could advise. I'm glad if it doesn't seem quite as restrictive as China at least.

"reading the room" as you describe makes sense as a good general approach though, when I'm not among people I'm close with.

I also feel like I'm hiding something from people sometimes. If I know they want to avoid contact with people if they have certain viewpoints, for example. I guess I can just try to avoid them out of respect without disclosing if I think that's safer.

Thanks for the reply.

This reminds me of how people talk about "-isms" (commun-ism femin-ism).

It's fun to do this and try to convert people, it feels good and like you're doing something important. At least it has for me. (uh, sorry guys.)

How do you just be a regular person without all this? It's almost like that's the exception, by far. It's like everyone is constantly trying to convert you to something. And I'm doing it too.

I guess there's a difference in honestly though. Someone can be participating in something without pushing it on others, to varying degrees of insistence and varying degrees of ignoring the targeted people and reality.

Yes, but I don't know when we'll be able to actually get the site updated.

Hm, ok.

You all do a lot of IP tracking huh? Gee. It would be nice to find a way to make things more workable with less of that, just for everyone's safety. I guess you do that for DDOS protection? It does sound hard to be able to read or edit the logs without being able to read or edit the logs.

It sounds like things are under development then? People might like to know how the development is going. Maybe people would even want to help.

We could always fork to a new repos if we wanted to develop it more actively right and work with a repos that isn't archived? Since whoever it belonged to has archived it?

I have frank discussions with close friends and family about my 'dissident' thoughts. I don't try to bring them around to my way of thinking, but I tell them why I have these opinions, and encourage them not to trust any one source of information, myself included. In my opinion, encouraging critical thinking and discourse amongst those around me is far more important than finding a like minded group to ensconce myself in.

This is a really good reminder for me, thank you.

I also mean about people I'm less close with and the public too.

  • I'm not very good at hiding things in person. Like if I disagree with something or feel uncomfortable in some way that reveals dissident thinking. I think people can tell. Am I safe if people I rely on to help me meet my basic needs get a whiff? Am I going to be put on a tracking list? What is it safe to talk about publicly? Are there some things it's not?

  • what happens if you try to use legal stuff to protect you? does it still work right now? what about trying to get laws changed, or doing protest type stuff? is that safe?

hmm. I don't know much about hardware and didn't realize about people hiding stuff in chips. I keep seeing people recommend this or that company for more open hardware but I guess we're not there yet, since it looks like there's no open manufacturer for some of the components.

Maybe I can look into what the FSF recommends for now. Thanks. Hopefully the situation will improve as more people become aware and interested. There are at least people trying to handle the open hardware issue even if they haven't gotten to all the components yet, so that's good at least.

I had hoped musk was actually going to do the free speech thing. Guess not right now. More free speech is still good, but I'd like to find a better way of doing things.

Maybe if we make a fuss Musk will back off on the censorship. Maybe he needs protection from powerful interests. Why would he do this after talking up wanting to give more free speech and going to all the trouble of buying twitter in the first place? He's done some stuff that's helpful, with the "twitter files" releases etc, but this is pretty blatantly not ok? Unless they're still trying to deal with the problems with the algorithms from mass flagging or something and they didn't intend to be censoring stuff like this?

I know open source means means anyone can fork the code, but it would also be nice to find existing development groups that take a different approach. I guess you're right though, if they aren't there already the straightforward answer is just to make them. And you're right, that is the beauty of things being open source.

freebsd looks like it has a code of conduct that includes "gender identity and expression". does it tend to be better than others though? I've seen a few people suggest it on here now.
