How else can the court confirm what someone "knows or believes"?

I'd assume their lawyer told them pleading guilty to those charges is the only way they can survive and that's what they did.

Yes, I think I actually heard about these guys and their case before. It is still staggering that there is a law which presupposes that the judge and the jury have mind reading abilities. I would expect a law like that to be abused by the courts regardless of any plea deal tricks.
