It was the anniversary of his death recently and Counter Currents had a lot of good articles examining his work and life. They're well worth reading. Great man and well ahead of his time.

He died so young. I wish he had lived to see 2020.

It's impressive that he was able to come up with these ideas of anarch-tyranny during a time with so little anarcho-tyranny.

Dissident thought is predicated on truths. Follow information to it's logical conclusion and you too can predict the future. How long those conclusions take to manifest is just a matter of probabilities. No different than a chemical reaction reaching it's lowest energy state. In one of Asimov's works, Foundation, a psychohistorian, Hari Seldon, does exactly this but on a much longer timescale.

Seldon is tried by the Committee and defends his beliefs, explaining his theories and predictions, including his belief that the Empire will collapse in 300 years and enter a 30,000-year dark age. He informs the Committee that an alternative to this future is attainable, and explains to them that creating a compendium of all human knowledge, the Encyclopedia Galactica, would not avert the inevitable fall of the Empire but would reduce the dark age to one millennium.

Get out of my head nombre. I'm actually reading the Foundations series right now. Of course we learn later the real purpose of the Encyclopedia Galactica....

Similar theme in A Canticle for Liebowitz, although in that universe knowledge was destroyed intentionally, a kind of idiocracy.

After 20th-century civilization was destroyed by a global nuclear war, known as the "Flame Deluge", there was a violent backlash against the culture of advanced knowledge and technology that had led to the development of nuclear weapons. During this backlash, called the "Simplification", anyone of learning, and eventually anyone who could even read, was likely to be killed by rampaging mobs, who proudly took on the name of "Simpletons". Illiteracy became almost universal, and books were destroyed en masse.

Reminds me of the Khmer Rouge purge.

Basically. Cut people off from their history and they're lost in the woods. Don't know where they came from and then they don't know where they're going. Just wander around consuming what the forest has to offer.

Kind of like that X-files episode with Mulder trapped underground getting high on psilocybin, not realizing where he is.

This Asimov stuff is bizarre but interesting.

It is a cool concept but the books aren't very imo. Most people seem to like them though.

I recommend reading his last book, Leviathan, and It's Enemies. Its kind of meaty, but worth it. Can be hard to find though, doubt your local library has a copy. He was right about a lot of things.

Also came here to post that. I am enjoying Gregory Hood and Chris Roberts' discussions and like all good podcasts I am picking up on a number of books that I need to read
