But you're probably right California isn't 60% white, since the US census determines who's white and who isn't purely based on self-identification, and lot of self-identified "white" Hispanics are actually literally mestizos (in some cases with actual white ancestry as low as 60% or even less).

The US census bureau should just abolish the Hispanic category and instead categorize white Hispanics (NOT self-identified "white" Hispanics but Hispanics who are actually genetically mostly or fully white) as white and non-white Hispanics as mestizo or simply non-white Hispanic.
