What made you feel confident that the US was 30% black? Seems pretty presumptive if u don't even live here.

Probably the impression from seeing photos/videos of urban areas, as well as the obvious normalization by the media.

Fun fact for anybody who hadn't really questioned the 13/50 thing, it's more like 7/50. Consider how rarely women are convicted for violent crime.

Media likes to over-represent them as if racial demographic proportions were equivalent. It gets pretty tiring.

I showed my one friend FBI data on racial homicide data and they were quite startled at the lies the media tells with respect to black homicides.

It's more like 3/50 because most crime is done by black young and middle aged men.

If 3% of all dogs committed 50% of all dog attacks, those dogs would banned. Yet these animals are allowed to roam free in the streets.

I guess i get you but i still feel it's kinda silly to think those various sources are going to be anywhere close to reliable to even base an impression off of. Like maybe that would make more sense in an era where you can't look up the stats super quickly. If i'm interested in painting a picture of my head of the ethnic diversity of a place, i'd just look it up rather than base it on something completely unreliable. But i guess i'm just doing stupid nitpicking. Nevermind.

Impression from media and other cultural institutions most likely, and their "diversity" programs in casting.

Also not from the US (or West), but yes I was surprised to learn that African descent individuals make up only ~12-13% of the population. Because we consume American media and Africans are definitely overrepresented there compared to other minority races in US in terms of proportion. For example, in the UK it is even more prominent, UK media really makes it appear as if Africans consists of some 25% of the population I'd presume, whereas in reality, the South Asians are much larger in number. Africans tend to be a token minority for representation, I am saying this as objectively I can judge. No offence to anyone.

Lmao... you're on saidit and you don't even wanna say "black", that's pretty weird. To take your UK example, it seems rather obvious why blacks would stand out more in people's heads than south asians. South asian culture is hella boring compared to blacks... we watch media for interesting stories, so blacks will obviously have more interesting stories than south asians with all their violence and criminal behavior. It's not the media's job to teach people the ethnic proportions of a place, so i'm sorry but it's silly to think that would ever ever be good source of information for that.

Well, I prefer African-descent, European-descent etc. when referring to ethnic distinctions. Just my personal preference. Well, these shows have very little to do with the cultures of the said ethnicity's origin countries, but rather the culture of the country of show's origin e.g. British. Yes, it is not the source of information for ethnic representation but pop-culture does create an impression in a typical consumer's mind regardless of if they are interested in the demographics of nations or not.

According to the census information it was 13.4% in 2018/2019 https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/table/US/RHI225219
