I'm sorry, what?

That's exactly what I said when I saw that! Like...wtf is homonormativity and what gay utopia is this person living in where same-sex attraction is normalized and supported by society?! 🤡🌎

I'm pretty sure homonormativity is just being a normal person who happens to be gay as opposed to making being "queer" be your entire identity and purpose in life.

Heteronormativity is the idea that gay relationships should emulate straight ones. In a heteronormative relationship, while both members are the same sex, they still follow "straight" ideals such as monogamy and there will be one member that definitely takes the "male" role of breadwinner and pants of the house while the other takes the "female" role of homekeeper and more subservient to the "male."

Basically it's anyone and anywhere from abusive and overly controlling relationships to simply people who aren't super sexually explorative and divide the labor between the two of them by setting individual tasks to each rather than splitting each task evenly. It's a dumb and vague term

How is monogamy a "straight" ideal??

Because it is acceptable in the eyes of religious fundamentalists. Polyamory and open relationships are not, so those are the woke things to do

I don't think we should call everything that religious fundamentalists accept a "straight ideal".

homonormativity

Oh, you know-- the Homo Norm Nativity! With gay Baby Jesus and either Mary and Josephine, or Mario and Joseph (take your pick).

Or maybe it involves a dude named Norm. Somehow.

Also, am I the only one who originally read this as "hobonormativity"? Well, I guess that makes about as much sense!

A lot of these people really do think gay men are all effete urban professionals with rich daddies (biological or sugar). I was gay and homeless. I'm curious if that makes me less queer than a straight homeless person. You know, because homonormativity.

I also think there is a perception of "homonormativity" if you live in or around big cities like DC or New York. I'm not saying that it's a treacherous hinterland of homophobic savages everywhere else, but you can see that a lot of bigger, more liberal cities go out of their way to cater to LGBT people, so it can give you a very skewed perspective as to how accepted it really is in the wider society.

Queer is like a negative sign in multiplication, two queer circumstances cancel out. Gay + homeless = not queer. I recommend you also become a lesbian or something so you can get that sweet sweet queer cred. Just be super careful to only add queerness in odd amounts.

Queer theory shouldn't exist, much less be taught in universities.

The only people I know personally who are really into queer theory are straight men who use it to rape lesbians and straight women who use it to feel special and not guilty they're in hetero relationships.

They're right, as a cisgender gay man I do not identify as "queer", I don't want any part of that dumpster fire.

I'm sure cis straight homeless men would be absolutely overjoyed to be referred to as "queer". /s

homonormativitey is a word used by straight people appropriating gay culture, so its cultural appropriation, tell them that.

"Queer is an anti-gay slur that means weird or strange, and our field of study has nothing to do with that slur! It's a different meaning of the word!"

"What's queer studies? Well, it's a study of weir- uh people who exist outside of society's norms. So it's about homeless people, lesbians, you know, queers."

[–]Socialjustus 6 insightful - 5 fun6 insightful - 4 fun7 insightful - 5 fun -  (0 children)

If you think what they've done to the word "queer" is bad, wait until they finish with the word "Fruity".

[–][deleted] 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

homeless people are queer because...they live outside of the society norms . . . ........ ok... i personaly aren't comfortable with the word queer used for describing LGB people in the first place, but they are, between themselves, constantly changing meaning of words. how could they even keep up ? TQ+ is clearly the movement of nothingness, i just see them as pseudo nihilsts that wants to be special.
