I'm glad I am married to my husband. I don't see a direct link with the trans bs.

Except possibly that the Queer Theorists need to keep pushing the envelope, and once marriage equality was a done deal they moved onto other battles. But let's be honest, the QT people are anti-marriage in any meaningful sense.

My husband asked me how I became so conservative, and I told him it was because of him. He wasn't quite sure what I meant, and it took me awhile to work it out in my head.

I have a friend who is a newly minted therapist, she talks about how she thinks all of this nonsense is due to attachment deficiencies ("attachment" here is to be understood in the technical psychological sense). I agree with her 100%, and that is what I meant in response to my husband. Once you become securely attached you understand its value, and you understand how the tidal-waves of nonsense that come mostly from the left side of the aisle work against attachment and are likely the result of insecure or disordered attachment.

Well it's all anecdotal unless you do an empirical study, which is why I find the statistical analyses interesting. But I acknowledge the built-in biases these studies have, namely that they select for people who look for mates online. Those who find their mates "out in the world" are, statistically speaking, more extroverted and probably also more attractive in general.

Money buys space to self-actualize, though not everybody who is wealthy takes advantage of that space.

But money also buys insulation, which protects you from having to perform in ways that are tied to behaviors selected for via evolutionary biology. There are other required performances but they are more abstract.

[–]IridescentAnaconda 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I think the point (which is evidenced by statistics albeit collected in an online environment) is that, if you're short, you need to be extra-masculine and extra-successful to be considered attractive to women. And in an online environment your masculine bearing is hard to communicate - before people were forced to communicate online a short guy could make up for it by being extra masculine in his demeanor.

Your other comment in this thread resonates with me in that, because I am short, I have had to develop a masculine bearing, and it may have also contributed to my financial success (although it probably matters less because I am a gay man). I have a friend, a gay guy who is 5'3", triple-black-belt, very masculine, and would be considered extra hot by most gay men (well, that was before middle age set in).

I think a lot of these online fem-boys are pussies because they are lazy, but even if they could become more manly they would still have a hard time communicating it on an online environment. Maybe that's why they give up? They could at least muscle up, that's easy to see in pictures.

It's kind of true, the world is now pretty grim for short straight guys. I've read a couple of articles that describe statistical analyses of height, income, and attractiveness, based on dating-site matches. Basically, if you are a man, for every inch shorter you are you have to make something like $30K to $50K annually to make up for it (i.e. be considered equivalently attractive). I think about my next-door neighbor who is about 5'6" or 5'7": attractive wife, two kids ... and a huge house, 5 acre lot, multiple vehicles and lots of toys. I'm also on the shorter side, but as a gay man it's much less of a problem (one of us has to be short, no?)

If the straight men arent dangerous, scary and violently masculine, then they cant respect them or be attracted to them as sexual partners.

This is a really important aspect to (toxic) heterosexual relationships. We forget that some women contribute to the toxicity of their relationships by selecting for the most violent and scary men. I wouldn't say this never happens in gay male relationships, but it is comparatively far less common. (On the other hand, uber-promiscuous partner who can't keep in his pants? Totally gay.)

I am fascinated by the hating on Christians. Yes, some Christians are douchebags but for the most part Christians are pretty mild about teh gay. Even most anti-gay Christians in the west are relatively hands-off, i.e. "I don't want to have to deal with them" as opposed to the "kill them all" stance taken by Islam.

Christianity itself doesn't do much for me (I'm a devout pagan if you can imagine such a thing) but I respect it and have many friends and family members for whom Christianity gives great meaning in life. It's weird to me to use Christianity as a pivot for ones political/social orientation.

We don't really celebrate the anniversary. We entirely forgot this year, we were both so busy! But part of it is I don't think either of us feel the need to remember our "one special day" because, honestly, "every day is special" in the sense that we are both pretty satisfied with the relationship/marriage. I mean we have our days of being irritated with each other like every couple but we both seem able to contextualize the experience as just what happens when you live with somebody and around them pretty much 24/7.

Regarding Christian parents, sorry your mother is snide/unsupportive, that is kind of discouraging. MIL and FIL are supportive, treat me as one of the family, but I guess they just have a mental block around the word "marriage".

Our friends, a straight couple, wanted to officiate so the male half of the couple got the necessary certification. The wedding ceremony took place in a small stage theater to which we have access (as it has some sentimental associations for all four of us). We invited close friends and (my) family members, about a dozen in all. Then we all went out to a higher-end restaurant (we had booked a room), husband and I paid for everybody. It was very simple, just what we wanted.

Note: we didn't invite my husband's parents because we were not sure they would approve of legal marriage. They are supportive of our relationship but also they are devout Christians, father-in-law has expressed doubts about gay marriage in the past, so we didn't want to put them in an awkward position. Husband hid the fact that we are married for awhile, but though we've never mentioned it, it should be obvious that we are legally connected due to various real estate transactions, insurance issues, etc. over the years.

But definitions are ultimately empty. We are all more than what defines us socially.

Now LGB children are facing a bigger threat: lifelong medicalization.

“If you’re genuinely not interested in a certain set of binary genitalia, that’s okay; you shouldn’t have sex with someone that you don’t want to,” Hamil assures. “But if you’re really into someone, are genitals going to be a dealbreaker for you? Thanks for writing this up so I didn't have to. I consider myself more-or-less a libertarian who leans a little right from center.

I would add (since OP brought up religion) that I am deeply religious in a Buddhist/Gnostic/Contemporary-Pagan kind of way. As I progress along this path (which I have followed for decades) and as I grow older I understand that this path makes as many demands as any other (e.g. Christianity) although they may be formulated differently. I'm fine with Christians and have some very good friends who are quite devout Christians. I have no illusions about any influence I can wield in changing other people (in other words I have no interest in proselytizing) but it does lead to opinions about contemporary culture that might seem harsh to some. To me it seems there are objective truths whether you like them or not, although I believe people need to learn them on their own time.

Feelings about large age gaps in same sex relationships by lovelyspearmint in LGBDropTheT

Here is a personal story FWIW. When I was younger I was genuinely attracted to older men, 10-20 year gap. One man who I had a fling (or series of flings with) was 25 years older than I (met him when I was 25) -- he was in excellent shape and exceptionally handsome and the sex was some of the best ever. Back then I definitely would have considered a LTR with him but we were geographically challenged (there also some intimacy issues on his part, also he was still in the military during the era of DADT). I have maintained a friendship with him over the years, even after meeting and eventually marrying my now-husband (who is 5 years older than I am). I am now a little older than military-guy was when we first met.

So a few observations: when you are 25 and hooking up with or dating a 50-year-old, you are healthy and he is "healthy enough", no obvious problems that would interfere with dating or hookups. However, when you reach 50, you start to experience those health problems that are relatively easy to hide from people who don't live with you but are irritating as fuck and sometimes really impact your quality-of-life (GI problems, back-aches, headaches, etc.). Both my husband and I endure these on a daily basis and realize that it's only downhill from where we are now: we are aware of parents' serious health problems, and also (in my case) the formidable and occasionally life-threatening problems faced by 70-something-year-old military-guy. I'm willing to put up with my husband's problems because he is more or less on the same schedule I am, but I would not, at this point in my life, want to be caring for a partner in his 70s.

The point being is that at 25 it is easy to imagine "spending the rest of your life" with somebody who is 50. At 50+ I can't imagine spending the "rest of my life" with somebody who is 10 years or less away from death and is likely to require a lot of intense care-giving at a time when I am still "in my prime" but on the downslope.

Aside from health issues, there are also developmental differences that are much easier to see at 50 than when you're 25.

Just to clarify: I'm going to care for whoever I marry regardless, "in sickness and in health". But all other things being equal it's better to marry somebody who is close to you in age.

Arkansas Passes ‘Save Adolescents From Experimentation Act’ To Ban Trans Surgery, Puberty Blockers For Minors by Drewski in news

Children are not developmentally able to understand the consequences of serious medical decisions. Puberty blockers cause a host of medical problems (e.g. osteoporosis). 80% of trans-identified adolescents will eventually desist if left alone (not put on the trans bus). Over 60% are children who will later identify as LGB. Transing of adolescnets represents an erasure of lesbians and gay men.

At the risk of an unpopular comment, I actually do think there is something to it, but not the "your daily horoscope" bs that used to appear in newspapers. I am in the midst of reading John MIchael Greer's translation of the Picatrix and it is pretty much all based on medieval astrology. (You'll note that JMG is no intellectual slouch.) It is a relatively complex system that requires quite a bit of understanding of both archetypes and mathematics: to understand a birth chart you need to see the entire configuration (not just sun sign), evaluate the geometry and the archetypes, and also be able to compare against the current configuration (among other things). To me it seems much more plausible if you accept (as I do) the "holofractal" model of reality, i.e. that we live in a holographic universe where everything reflects everything else. As above so below as the saying goes.

Agreed, the miscarriage rate was not normalized to vx rate: shitty epidemiology. I do think there is the potential of great harm to unborn fetuses and if I were a pregnant woman I would wait until at least after childbirth (maybe even after breastfeeding) before accepting the vx. Misleading stats like this only hurt the cause of people who are advocating for caution.

I've known two transmen in my life. One was a student, another a colleague. I didn't know either one very well but they both seemed like decent people. They both passed well enough (even though subtle cues might give them away as XX) and I think they were trying to live as unobtrusively as possible.

I don't know any transwomen although people I know have told some stories. To be honest they all seem like trainwrecks from the stories I've heard.

The experience of growing up as a straight man has its own rites of passages, including trying to fit in, meeting demands/expectations of strength and authority, trying to make yourself attractive to women (which usually involves a complicated dance of fitting in while standing out in a positive way), etc. It offends me, as a gay man, to hear women claim they know what any of that is like.
