Even today "Latinos" or "Hispanics" are still considered to be a race distinct from "Whites", at least according to the sorts of people who think races are biological categories and not social constructions. This is the idiocy of "races" -- the ethnic Spaniard (with his blood a rich mixture of a half dozen different Iberian tribes, Romans, Visigoths, Moors, North Africans, black Africans and Arabs) is "White" when he boards a plane in Madrid and "non-White" when he lands in Florida 🙄

The truth is that historically, indigenous Europeans including the Irish, southern Europeans (Spaniards, Greeks and Italians), Poles, Slavs, Gypsies, Tartars, European Jews and any others have often been classified as "not white", or in the "grey zone" (pun intended) as not quite white enough to count. Likewise for people from the Middle East. Ironically, even some ethnic groups from the Caucasus sometimes aren't considered "Caucasian" because they are too dark or too Slavic, and if that doesn't make you roll your eyes at the whole stupid concept, then nothing will.

Benjamin Franklin classified the world's peoples into four groups: black, tawny, swarthy and white. Under Franklin's classification, only Anglo-Saxons from the British Isles and Saxons from north Germany were "white". French, Germans, Russians and Swedes were of the "Swarthy" race. Your guess is as good as mine why Franklin thought Swedes were swarthy.

What Franklin thought of Celts like the Irish, Scots, Welsh and Bretons is not clear, but it's pretty unlikely that he considered the "savage, primitive" Irish to be white when even the French and Germans failed to make the cut.

Two hundred years later, der Führer considered the Germanic peoples, including Swedes and Anglo-Saxons, to be the most advanced people, the so-called Aryans. French, Hungarians and Greeks were lesser whites. Poles and Balts (Estonians, Latvians and Lithuanians) were even lower still, good only for menial jobs working for good Germans. Slavs, Russians and actual Aryans -- Gypsies (Roma and Sinti) -- were literally subhuman Untermenschen fit only for extermination.

Racists like to include Classical Greece and Italy as part of "the White race" when they claim to be part of a long line of European culture going back to the Greek philosophers, but then exclude Greeks and Italians -- especially southern Italians -- from migration as "non-White" when it comes to their modern day descendants.

The Irish were long considered to be a lesser people just barely more advanced than the sub-Saharan Africans, considered by many as the "missing link" between the superior European and the savage African. In the words of author Noel Ignatiev notes, “While the white skin made the Irish eligible for membership in the white race, it did not guarantee their admission; they had to earn it.”

• Armenians weren't declared white by American courts until 1925.
• In 1922, Takao Ozawa, a white-passing permanent resident of Hawaii, applied for US citizenship on the basis that he spoke perfect English, was culturally American, and his skin was whiter than that of most so-called "Caucasians" (whites). The courts rejected his application.
