That province is right next to mine, so here's some context. The province in question, New Brunswick, is almost solely owned by one family - the Irvings. The Irving companies own oil refineries, shipbuilding interests, and an enormous business in lumber and pulp & paper manufacturing. New Brunswick is mostly trees, so Irving holds either direct or indirect rights to harvest most of the land. They own all of the newspapers and other media in the province. They own the politicians who 'run' the province. This syndrome is located in an area where they have been spraying a lot of glyphosate herbicide. If the syndrome is linked to them spraying poison all over the populace, then the federal government (who they don't completely own) may step in and they may take a hit on their profits. So, in order to protect capitalism, it's "fuck you and don't die too loudly when the time comes".
