It is now prohibited In Canada to talk about the benefits of gasoline and gas for cars, Law C-372. Now you can spend 2 years in prison or a 500 thousand dollar fine. A nice commentary on contemporary feminism. Have modern feminists been too clever by half? In an effort to achieve equality with men, or even superiority over men, have they simply put themselves into a position where women have no clear social function at all, and, are consequently treated as non-entities?

Why focus on Israel? They were only responding to a mass slaughter of their own citizens, and are just trying to stabilize the situation, so it won't happen again. The Muslims are always trying to destroy the state of Israel, because they won't tolerate a non-Muslim nation in their midst.

What if Josef Stalin had been a healthy, big strapping man, instead of five foot three, with a crippled left arm? by jerryk in history

Interesting point. Stalin was never addicted to anything other than work, and power, of course. But, power particularly, is very addictive! Let's say that he might have been a good manipulator, even if he'd been big and strong. However, his extreme physical limitations forced him to develop these innate manipulative skills to an extraordinary degree, turning him into a supreme genius at human manipulation.

Most people don't. Even in Russia, this aspect of Stalin -- his extreme physical vulnerability -- is deemphasized. Stalin is almost the diametrical opposite of Russian tsarist hero, Peter the Great -- who was six foot eight, burly, all muscle, and very athletic. Peter the Great was almost a superman. Stalin was scarcely a man at all by comparison. Yet, they serve rather similar roles in Russian history. Peter the Great modernized Russia with slave labor programs and education. Stalin did largely the same. Both were very brutal, but also very effective.

Why exactly do some U.S. states produce their own Real ID's, while other states have them produced in other states, and mailed back to them? by jerryk in AskSaidIt

[–]jerryk[S] 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

The impression I'm getting is that the issue is federal regulation. That, although the cost of producing a Real ID isn't that much greater than a conventional driver's license, the federal regulation is much, much tighter. So, the state is responsible for ensuring the training and compliance of any agency issuing these Real ID's, and, in the case of many states, they simply don't want to be bothered with the extra work. So, they're willing to pay some other state to take care of ensuring compliance with federal regulations, so they don't have to be bothered. In other words, pure laziness.

Oh, come now! Of course Russia is targeting civilian infrastructure! They're blowing the hell out of power plants and electric generating stations as we speak, and that objective is openly expressed. The idea is to freeze out the Ukrainians during the winter, and, it's a perfectly viable military strategy. We can debate who's more genocidal, Russia or Israel, but, they both will do whatever it takes to control populations they perceive as a threat to their regional agendas.

The Russians may pursue some additional territory in the Baltics conceivably, or Moldova, but, these are tiny countries of little concern to other nations.

[–]jerryk[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Mediaeval kings had very little power over their subjects, military technology didn't allow them to project their power, that's why feudalism became popular -- everyone was dependent and worked for their local lord, not the King. Effectively, Universities acted like local Monasteries, largely independent of any central authority.
