Mediaeval kings had very little power over their subjects, military technology didn't allow them to project their power, that's why feudalism became popular -- everyone was dependent and worked for their local lord, not the King. Effectively, Universities acted like local Monasteries, largely independent of any central authority.

You're skeptical? Fair enough. Where else but Odessa could the drone boats be launched from, in the large scale and systematic way necessary, given that Russia controls all other ports on the Black Sea? So, they're in Odessa. If the controllers and factories were out in the open, Russia would have destroyed them all, long ago. So, they're hiding. Where else could they hide, except in the civilian apartment buildings, and why would the Russians be wasting valuable missiles on destroying civilian apartment buildings unless they contained important military assets like these?
You have some other explanation? Mine makes perfect sense, I believe.

Zelensky may be providing Russia with both the political rationale, and the means -- in terms of his total incompetence -- of taking over Ukraine in its entirety, something that they had not been planning, initially. So, they're letting Zelensky live, in order to use his absolute incompetence in leading Ukraine to advance their own agenda now -- total conquest of Ukraine.

The place to draw the line is Poland, not Ukraine. Ukraine is traditional Russian territory for centuries, Poland is not. We should put ten divisions of U.S. troops in Poland, that will be quite sufficient to keep Russia under control, along with our nuclear deterrent. NATO's current activities in Ukraine are just making Russia stronger, and getting Russia angry. They are not defending NATO, they are making NATO weaker.

You know, I grew up in Canada, although I was born in the U.S. That sounds so Canadian! No freedom of speech, all Canadians are supposed to march in lock-step with the government.

What you can always be quite certain of, is that the government's representation of the facts is totally inaccurate.

Are American parents actually training their children to have sex with schoolteachers, as a means of guaranteeing their financial future? by jerryk in AskSaidIt

OK. So, you agree that there is some calculated manipulation going on here, but, it's on the part of the kids, not the parents. Could be.

OK. I'm trying to be fair here, I really don't know very much about it. I'm naturally something of a skeptic.

Good point. The whole thing is extremely weird. Looks like a government put-up job, to me, anyway.

I guess, having read a good deal of L. Ron Hubbard, and found him to be a rather interesting writer, I do feel a bit skeptical about the notion that the Church of Scientology is simply a criminal organization. Dianetics sounds like a plausible form of psychotherapy, although I've never tried it. There are bad apples in every barrel. Simply saying that a few Scientologists have been accused of crimes really doesn't convince me of much. Particularly "sex crimes", which, as George Orwell warns us in 1984, are very prone to being used as a source of power by corrupt governments, since sexuality is simply a part of human nature.

But, the Catholic Church still systematically protects its members from accusations of sexual impropriety, far more so than the Church of Scientology does.

Sure. But, if they lose control of the narrative, it does become rather more difficult for the government to do what it wants without evidence. People are more likely to fight back, more aggressively, and, the government might lose.

Vadimir Putin's next legitimate military target is Latvia. by jerryk in WayOfTheBern

[–]jerryk[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

You may well be correct. I'm merely posing a fairly plausible scenario. Bear in mind, I'm suggesting Russia might NOT have to engage in any military action at all to get what it wants from Latvia, and that would probably Russia's first choice. However, I suspect they could actually get away with limited military action against a small NATO member state. I'm well aware that Russia, and Vladimir Putin are highly sophisticated in their moves internationally, and that this is quite typical of Russian international behavior, historically. That's why the comparisons of Putin and Hitler in the West are so ridiculous!

[–]jerryk[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Could be. I guess I'm not necessarily arguing for the necessity of this, from Russia's point of view, but, for its feasibility, and attractiveness. I really believe NATO is a paper tiger by this stage, and showing that publicly could be very, very useful for Russia. I think the NATO leadership are so wrapped up in lies and unreality by this stage that they're scarcely capable of doing anything, at all, under any circumstances!

The point is, there are degrees of "standing by its members". You could argue that NATO should immediately launch a thermonuclear first strike on Russia in the event, but, you don't really expect that, do you? What I'm suggesting is that they would do something -- probably send arms, probably refuse to acknowledge Russian territorial gains, but, that's about it. What do you expect, full NATO mobilization and total war over Latvia? Probably not. Bear in mind, in WWII, the British and French did declare war on Nazi Germany when they invaded Poland, but, they didn't actually do much more than that, at all. Perhaps NATO would "declare war" on Russia -- and that's about it. I'm skeptical even of this, however, if Russia's territorial demands were fairly modest and reasonable -- the public wouldn't support it. Why would the general public of Europe and America agree to go to war over a rail corridor through Latvia to Kaliningrad? They wouldn't.

What if Josef Stalin had been a healthy, big strapping man, instead of five foot three, with a crippled left arm? by jerryk in history

Interesting point. Stalin was never addicted to anything other than work, and power, of course. But, power particularly, is very addictive! Let's say that he might have been a good manipulator, even if he'd been big and strong. However, his extreme physical limitations forced him to develop these innate manipulative skills to an extraordinary degree, turning him into a supreme genius at human manipulation.

He was quite handsome, and attractive to women. Stalin used personal charm to achieve his ends, to a large degree. Like I say, his social skills were remarkable.

Most people don't. Even in Russia, this aspect of Stalin -- his extreme physical vulnerability -- is deemphasized. Stalin is almost the diametrical opposite of Russian tsarist hero, Peter the Great -- who was six foot eight, burly, all muscle, and very athletic. Peter the Great was almost a superman. Stalin was scarcely a man at all by comparison. Yet, they serve rather similar roles in Russian history. Peter the Great modernized Russia with slave labor programs and education. Stalin did largely the same. Both were very brutal, but also very effective.
