Throughout the countries history, both parties have been centristish on social policy with economics taking center stage. The GOP did lean towards classical liberalism and during the cold war their focus was on combating communism.

Our party has moved towards nationalism and populism (while the demonrats have been a diehard marxist anti american parasite) with Reagan integrating cultural nationalism. Trump ha started the first step towards establishing a rational and fair form of racial nationalism, hes a stepping stone. Not to mention finally turning the party firmly against neocons and RINOs.
