Hard to say. I suspect the reports are real but there basically isn't much of a story here. School didn't comment on what exactly it means to "accommodate this student" and I read it basically as "we don't care what the student identifies as so long as it's not a distraction or disturbance to the other classmates" which frankly seems the right way to handle most of this stuff, ignore it unless it cases a problem. Most attention seeking behaviors thrive on the negative attention.

Granted the "not speaking" part could be disruptive but I'm not sure how you'd go about forcing a kid to speak if they just won't. Again usually the best thing to do is to ignore it.

Now if I had a kid identifying as a cat as a way to get special treatment and shit to claim discrimination, I'd just tell them cats aren't allowed at school.
