The problem with "trolling" is that the word nominally means "person expressing insincere views to upset people" but in practice overwhelmingly means "person expressing sincere views which upset me"

The false definition also functions as a defense mechanism, by reassuring you that the person saying things that you find upsetting couldn't possibly really mean them, because the things you believe are true are so obviously true. They must be saying those things to upset you, when really they know you're right and are just denying it because they're meanies.

I would add that when you have a person who believes in subjectivity over objectivity, as is commonly found on the left, there is literally no way to ever reason with them. Not only do facts not matter, because everything is subjective, but other opinions don't matter because they are trolls.

Most people seem to think trolling is neither of those things but stuff like extreme bullying, harassment and death threats. That's what the MSM usually means by the word as well.

As a proud troll I feel this is a clear mark of the great prejudice and oppression of my people and being the most vulnerable, marginalised and excluded group everyone should do as we say.

No, trolling people is helpful. What we mean when we say trolling is essentially just provoking someone to react to something said.
Informing the public, reversing brainwashing or helping someone get a better perspective for something they don't really seem to grasp all are bolstered noticeably via provocation. Provocation is a potent teaching mechanism. This is why Socrates seems very insightful without being aggressive and still maintaining efficiency.

Yes, that's pretty close to the mark. There are a lot of people who get online and express opinions about aspects of the world that they have no experience with, they just parrot something they saw in a vid that jibed with them, perhaps because the tuber had a similar haircut. Yes, I think a lot of life is that shallow. It's the peer pressure thing, like when young people try crystal meth because a friend they look up to tells them it's the 'best' even though everything they have heard tells them it's a toxic drug to take.

A lot of what constitutes trolling is simply that. Inexperienced people online who think they know all about a subject and blurt out dribble. But that's what the block user button is for. It's like an AdBlocker for censoring out ill-informed people.

But their beliefs upset you, so you tell yourself little stories about why they believe what they believe, because that's easier than grappling with the content of their belief.

Well for that to be true you would have to have read and analyzed most of my posts, in the company of professional psychologists, and those of people I thought were idiots, and hence came to a scientifically based conclusion.
