This same conundrum has hit many other US and European industries. The sanctions have been huge own goals.

Future historians are going to count economic strength and size by an entirely different metric other than GDP. A country with hordes of McDonald's, Walmarts, and other service sector companies is not equal to one that makes machines and drills minerals.

GDP is as good a metric at determining the value of an economy as stock prices are at determining the true worth of a company.

Imo, a lot of American oligarch and corporate wealth is just stock market overvaluation and debt. There's no way Tesla is worth more than Toyota or Volkswagon.
