The Soviet Union was allied to a lot of African countries in the Cold War. In fact, they were the ones directly aiding the rebels in overthrowing Rhodesia, Apartheid South Africa & the Portuguese Colonies.

So it's probably a remnant of those days.

Edit: Some of them might also be there for sports.

Meanwhile the west was on the other side with a financial embargo. Ironically Israel was the only country supporting them though it was for the captive money really.

I think it also had to do with the fact that existence of those countries takes the heat off Israel. When those countries are gone all the moral outrage and anti apartheid activism can be directed towards Israel.
