The most curious thing about that Schopenhauer quote is not only that it applies to instinctual, chauvinistic patriotism rather than articulated ethnonationalism, as the full quote makes abundantly clear, but also that according to the logic espoused in that same quote, the only "miserable fools" who are worse off than national chauvinists are the internationalists and "humanists" who have to recourse to identifying with the achievements not of millions of their fellow men, but billions of them.
