We've probably nuked ourselves into the stone age before. Probably more than once.

I've often wondered about that, even if "we" didn't, how do we know there weren't intelligent dinosaurs etc. that did. The one thing that makes me think it didn't happen is humans have terraformed earth so that almost no part of it doesn't have human artifacts. The way we know about dinosaurs is sediment layers, not that their bones are so durable, i.e. we'd see some technological artifacts in their sediment layers.

We already have such a technology with nukes. It's just a matter of time I imagine before we're toast by our own hand. In the meantime We must secure...

Its about deterrence. The powerful have lives of comfort. They know that if they use nukes, chemical weapons or bioweapons, their enemies would retaliate and ensure mutual annihilation. Even if the elites survived in bunkers, they'd lose their life of opulence and be forced to live in the aftermath of a ruined wasteland. No more luxury.

So in all likelihood, it won't happen. Nuclear war could've erupted during the cold war yet it ultimately amounted to nothing

How far would we go to stop it?
