That, and the fact that they've been around so long that many of them have started to care more about securing their seats in parliament next election than implementing actual change

I thought of that too, but preferred to think otherwise. This seems to be a huge problem with nationalist mass parties.

    I don't think that would be as much of a solution as some people think. It'll simply shift more power from politicians to celebrities and media personalities. You'll get the neoliberal ghouls out, yes, but you'll be replacing them with narcissistic sociopaths.

      My point is that the influence of these people will increase dramatically. As soon as direct democracy becomes a thing, politics will be reduced to a mere competition for attention, outrage, drama, so on and so forth even more than it already is. Direct democracy would solve a lot of problems, for example with totally farcical and unpopular positions like neoliberalism, but it's not going to make politics any less of a clown show.
