As to "fronting" democracy, there are still plenty of people alive from the time of Perestroika and many of them speak English. Speak to some of them and you'll quickly see how real it was. Undermining the foundations of CPSU hegemony is precisely what toppled the entire Warsaw Pact. It wasn't some elaborate "high optics" manoeuvre. As to how "communists" would turn into nationalists or liberals, it is because very few of the communist party members were actual true believers - most were opportunists in it for the benefits. It was very, very lucrative to be a communist party member in the Warsaw Pact and this is another thing you can learn about for yourself. Luxury commodities as well as positions of power and prestige were all restricted to members of the communist party. It is obvious, then, why the communist parties of Eastern Europe were full of cynical opportunists that only obeyed power. When Gorbachev dismantled that power, the obvious happened - these people found a new master, America. That was their solution to the problem of preserving their power. What about the KGB? Yes, ex-KGB operatives run the FSB and Russia today. No, this does not make Russia "communist" in the least. The communist system is dead and these people, like their colleagues all across Eastern Europe, have moved on. Now their power and prestige depend on preserving the Russian state and amassing money, not on preserving the communist system and communist party.

These efforts to present the entirety of Russian politics of the last 30 years as some sort of organised communist plot to destroy the West are just the desperate attempt of the Cold War American war lobby to rehash the old American-Soviet conflict in order to legitimate their rule, extensive domestic powers and the siphoning of more and more money from the taxpayer. It's a complete fiction. Russia today is in no position to challenge America in anything and moreover it does not even need to do so, as America is now dismantling itself in the same manner that Gorbachev dismantled the Soviet Union.

If you only research him you will only ever be able to get a part of the whole story. Look into the things I mentioned. If you like, look into the FSB as well and see if they are the kind of people to be running a long term Soviet operation. The FSB is a huge organisation with a lot of operatives and they basically form a separate culture within Russia. I think you will quickly find that they have very different interests from the old KGB. Most of all it might be useful to look into the power struggle between Yeltsin and Gorbachev. In some countries like Poland there was even a total purge of the old political class. I think it becomes very hard to maintain this hypothesis of continuity between the USSR and Russia once you read up on that. You can take it even further by comparing Soviet economic performance and military spending to the greatly reduced Russian ones. The IMF "shock therapy" drama is also illuminating. No sane statesman, much less a group of statesmen, would undertake such a devastating course of action just for the sake of an operation of the type that Golitsyn suggests. The risk is exorbitant, the chance of success is very low and the payoff is also low. If this hypothetical plan relied on the admission of Russia into the European community, then it has backfired terribly as Russia is currently both severely diminished and still subject to diplomatic, economic and military isolation like the Soviets were. The only Russian politician to receive any Western approval is Navalny and his political platform literally includes purging the state apparatus of everyone currently involved with it, like the Poles did.

I can't exactly dispute enough about it because most geopolitics isn't exactly my thing (outside of certain nuance), but I will say that I can agree about the end game. I'm not certain he's really got the exact players right, as I'm pretty confident there's plenty of other groups that have decent influence, to some degrees which override the "Jewish" influences, but things certainly aren't hegemonic and they never have been.
