It just occurred to that I'm not quite sure about the trajectory of this cultural phenomenon. To what extent is it still around? I see it here and there, but again I'm not sure to what extent it still exists.

I grew up about 15 minutes away from a major American city and attended highschool in the early 2000s. "Wigger" culture was in full swing. It was so dominant that for the most part, in order to be in the popular clique, you had to imitate blacks to some degree or another. You had upper middle class whites listening exclusively to rap, talking with ghetto slang, walking with a jig, being violent, drugs, etc. You get some of these things even when whites dominate culture, but it was in overdrive both in number and severity when lots of white kids decided to imitate blacks. It wasn't just white kids picking individual aspects of blacks to imitate, they seemed to want others to experience them just as they would a black hoodlum. And as with blacks, the most unsettling thing about wiggers is that they might erupt into violence at the slightest provocation.

In my experience, it has trailed off significantly. It's hard for me to tell how typical my experience was, having lived near a big city. Looking back, I'm not familiar with any accounts of large numbers of white kids trying so deliberately to imitate blacks prior to the early 2000s. I'm sure it existed what with hip-hop taking off in the 90s, but it seems to me it was viewed as more of a tiny sub-culture, whereas I experienced it as the dominant culture in highschool.

Guess that's enough for now, what was your experience with this? It interests me to think about how exactly it exploded the way it did and why it trailed off.
