If we had city-states instead of nation-states, then you could play around with all the liberalism or totalitarianism that you want to, provided you keep it within your own borders or face consequences. Far too many people want to have their cake (tolerance) and eat it too (not suffer the consequences of that tolerance).

If we want to live peacefully and be prosperous, then this needs to be addressed. You can't have a society properly function with as much antagonism and division as we currently have.

I agree but I think such political divisions are purely a symptom of modern democracy. I doubt much people would care about their rulers if they weren't being actively prodded to be active spectators in the political realm, for example people in China or Saudi Arabia are more contempt with their rule than America.
