I haven't seen a good Sanity Sunday since we moved to SaidIt. Here is a thread on reddit about rape, and the comments are refreshingly sane.

During the height of the whole "college campus rape epidemic" nonsense people were seriously arguing that women could retroactively revoke consent. Seems like sanity eventually prevailed there.

now technically Nungesser "only" had to return to Germany, and even Johnny Depp got his fingertip sewn back on

problem is is that while 90% of people actually agree that Phil Hartman shouldn't have been gunned down in his bed by his coked-out ex, until the radfems attacked trans women ~2014 everyone was too afraid to say things like "maybe having boobs doesn't make you immune to felonies": and ultimately all we got is "Chris-Chan dicked Barb and even asked her to compare it to her previous husbands, but you can't say Chris-Chan is anything other than a woman"

Close, it was when people were saying "if the woman is completely sXe and enthusiastically consented throughout it, but when they were a child they were in a Catholic family who's devout grandparents forced her to take First Communion and she did to humor them before never going to church again, the one sip of communion wine they drank 10-15 years before means it was automatically rape whenever they have sex", as well as "if a woman is happily having enthusiastic consent throughout, but the next morning that ONE frenemy in her friends' group mocks her for being a slut because she secretly wanted the guy and she's jealous her friend hooked up with her, and the woman wants to get queen bee status in her friendgroup again, she can say it's rape."

Sadly, even with the sanity, some people in the comment were STILL saying this.

This is a USA cultural thing.

Something like 25% of women in the USA will say they have been raped when surveyed while in other countries it's between 4-10%. Places like India will only get 4%.

Now I could be wrong but I severely doubt the USA has more than double the rate of rape of most other countries, including it's neighbours which will have American men passing through, so it's more likely that American women just have a vastly different definition of rape than everywhere else.

Why is sanity constantly on the defense these days? That's the real problem. Insane and stupid people are given way too much credence, usually in the name of "compassion"

"Reddit is full of male survivors of rape by female predators." You call this sanity? I mean, it's sanity if the writer is being ironical - which he isn't.

No, I call it sanity that people say that that's not rape. You may be new to TiA but back when it was at it's peak on reddit, when Tumblr really was the source of most of the content, these sorts of things would get posted all the time and reddit comments would always just enforce how it is in fact rape. In fact I believe #2 on the compilation of best TiA posts of all time was a public service announcement in Australia that told people that if both parties are even a little under the influence then the man is a rapist.

It is refreshing and surprising to see reddit has come to their senses over this.

Let's put aside the fact that this might as well be a fake story (as 90% of Reddit posts are) that was posted just to gather an echo chamber of "no, you're right" (as 90% of Reddit posts are). The only reason people are showing some so-called sanity in the comments is that they get to say the woman is the villain and the main is innocent, which, again, is Reddit's national pasttime. What's so interesting or cool about it?

Back circa 2015 when 3rd wave was at its peak, when we had mattress girl and mansplaining and manspreading and all of that nonsense was popular, I recall the sentiment on Reddit was that consent can be withdrawn no matter how long ago the sex was, and drunk sex was always a one-way rape because men have all the power, or something along those lines. Anyone who disagreed ended up showcased on SRS (/r/shitredditsays, it was basically AHS but with less influence) and brigaded and the user's inbox flooded with trolls and threats.

So if this is the prevailing sentiment now then I guess Reddit is evolving a bit, with this subject at least. But they are still fucking bananas when it comes to just about every other subject.

I will say, reddit (the community not the site) has actually shown some improvement since the whole exodus that happened in June.

A lot of the more self-righteous and indignant people left because they were taking yet another ideological stand so you are left with a group that is a bit more moderate than it used to be. Also the right wing subreddits were among the few that didn't partake in the boycott, so the site as a whole became slightly more politically moderate.

Don't get me wrong, it's still a complete shit show, the change is too little too late, but there is some improvement.
