An American is a white person with European blood running through his or her veins. African-American? No such thing. Mexican-American? No such thing. If I move to Africa that doesn't make me an African. If I move to Mexico that doesn't make me a Mexican. Yet anyone who moves here slaps an "American" label on the back of whichever shithole country they fled to come here.

🤷🏼‍♂️ eh, wasn't so much invested in what anyone wants to categorize them as, as much as the fact that his system of categorization could not provide a name for them. He names everyone by their continent of origin, but also claims that only whites can be americans, removing native americans from the category he says they should be in - it's logically inconsistent, and systems of classification should not be contradictory

I would not accept 'Indian' either, as Indians are from India, and this is purely a misnomer based on Columbus not knowing what continent he was on

Quite a lot of native Americans prefer the term "Indian" to native American.

It's not just ignorance, it's an historical term they use for themselves because other terms have unwanted political connotations.

    We Americans, have been born from the fight for independence and growth away from horribly evil ways of the European countries from whom our country originated. Those European countries were historically murderously evil colonist who plagued the world, developed and ran one of the largest slave trade industries of their time, and established slave labor plantations around the world to feed their lust for trade, tobacco, sugar, and other indulgences. I think there is good history showing that we have rejected their deficient morals and found our own way.

      I definitely think that point of view is reasonable.

      While the French and British navy's were powerful and far reaching, they simply enabled the scale of colonialism and slave trade. It was a time when trade seemed the most important development of humanity, slavery was considered just a part of trade, and colonialism was just exploring for more resources to trade. It was considred just normal entrepreneurship of the day and wasn't so much endemic to those European countries. They simply we're prominent and successful in their time. Leaders and countries of other regions dominated the same in other periods of history and other parts of the world during the same period.

      I may simply be my romanticizing my country's history in a way to distance it from negative past elements, even shifting blame for our own negative past elements.
