There's this thing called the Pacific ocean which is filled with water right next to California. Not going to pretend that drought conditions don't have serious real world consequences in the short term, but economic realities will force fast tracked building of desalinization plants.

You can NOT drink the Pacific ocean, it is SALT WATER.

Desalination looks great on paper, but for some reason large scale desalination machines are only a fantasy.

For some reason other countries desalinate ocean water at scale just fine. What's a fantasy is leftist politics in USA

This is incorrect, they work fine.

California likely still has all 12 desalination from 2019:

They are scrambling to add more, but bureaucracy and environmental considerations have slowed things:

Desalination plants spew the extra salt, which can be harmful to coastal sea life, so they are most responsibly built farther out to sea, away from the coast, which increases their cost exponentially.

Lol no. It's as simple as boiling the water.

It's expensive and you need to build the infrastructure to do it on the large scale. But it's been implemented before. If California was smart they would have implemented it already but they can't even manage to build a train line let alone bother with long sighted infrastructure development plans. For a place with such restrictive environmental laws their blindspots are enormous. Hell they still just dump their sewage straight into the ocean.
