You got me interested:

It was created by Black studies professor and activist Maulana Karenga, based on African harvest festival traditions from various parts of Africa, including West and Southeast Africa. Kwanzaa was first celebrated in 1966.

Yup, he created this around 5 years prior to being convicted of imprisoning and torturing women who he apparently suspected were being disloyal to the black supremacy cult he founded.
