But he was absolutely fine with it, and he was seemingly fine with whatever hoops the govt would make him jump thru for his low cost housing, and other gratis gifts. When i asked him if he wanted to get out on his own and he seemed apathetic about it.

They put surveillance cameras on the govt housing near where i live, i don't think it's for theft or security from outsiders either.

They have a curfew during certain events and holidays or during certain times they aren't allowed to have people over. The cops show up Pretty regularly if the camera shows ppl in the hallways or on the outside.

I don't think ppl who think govt owning or providing things such as housing understand what that means, but i fear they will find out.

I agree, a lot, yet not, a lot. It's not that simple.

1) Government ownership is another form of privatization - controlled by those in power - and it's always been a rigged game from the dawn of time.

2) When have you ever been able to rely on the government 100%? There will be collateral casualties if that happened.

3) Ownership = respect. "Drive it like you rented it." or worse "Drive it like you stole it." indicates a lack of respect for the vehicle. If you "drive it like you own it" you're going to take care of it. Same for houses. Not that you'll drive it but that you'll care for it. :P

4) Small community government with a strong fair democratic process I can get behind - like a housing coop.

5) There is no 5. I could likely come up with something but I'm tired.

[–]astronautrob 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Ok my last attempt to try and educate someone who seems to not grasp the concept of reading comprehension. This was op first comment "It is the fault of the parents. You can nearly always always sacrifice income to have the mother stay at home with the child. It might require incredible budgeting, it may require sacrifice - but the difference in outcome for the child growing up is worth it." In that he states two things 1. It's the fault of the parents. So counter that I used an example of parents working min wage to dispel that myth. His second point was 2. You can nearly always sacrifice an income so the mother can stay home..., Again he min wage example shows this is false. Living wage, which I used next, would also show that a single parent would ahve to make $25 per hour for one parent to stay home. So even if we doible the min wage, which would encompass a lot of people, maybe even something we could even call a "vast majority", would not be able to have one parent stay home no matter show much budgeting there was. Again bro please stay on topic stop routing just parts of my comments to make the debate go in a different direction. These are technique's my wife uses, woman tricks. If you are a woman than makes sense but if not let's try and have a honest discussion. To your second point again read his comment it clearly states "you can NEARLY ALWAYS sacrifice to have one parent stay home with enough budgeting etc..." So he did say it you're just not reading everything which I've tried to advice you to do three times now.

I love your combination of condescension and a poor grasp of written English.

You're wrong in the sense that it was taken out of context.

Then why not put that example as a response to the comment it was intended to address? Your comment was addressed in the exact context that you placed it in.

If you would of read the op original comment the started the discussion you'd see he was talking about parents being able to budget or sacrifice and make ends meet no matter what economic situation...

Where exactly did he say this? I saw earlier he said "nearly always" which is obviously different from "no matter what."

[–]astronautrob 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

You're wrong in the sense that it was taken out of context. What op said was "The vast majority of people, if willing to make lifestyle sacrifices - could live in a smaller house, use an off-brand phone that only gets replaced when the battery dies, drive an older used economy class car, wear inexpensive clothes, only consume at home, etc". I don't agree with that statement but it's not what the example using min wage was referring to my friend. Reading comprehension is a hard thing to learn in your later years, I understand. If you would of read the op original comment the started the discussion you'd see he was talking about parents being able to budget or sacrifice and make ends meet no matter what economic situation they were while still have one parent stay home with the kid, then you would have hopefully figured out that that was what the min wage example was pertaining to not the vast majority comment that you took out of context. I would agree 100% that the vast tmajority of people aren't on min wage. The numbers don't lie. But that wasn't the contested point. As I said above the contested point was that parents, no matter their economical situation, would be able, in the words of the op, to make sacrifices and budget correctly so one parent could stay home and raise the kid while schools were closed during this "crisis". My point was that a two parent household on min wage could not realistically do that, hence why I used min wage numbers. I know it's tempting to take one piece of a conversation to make your point seem valid but it's dishonest. Not saying you do it on purpose, maybe that's how your brain works we are all different. And I understand it's hard when you jump right in the middle of a conversation but again please my friend read fully before commenting and take some time to comprehend next time.

Uses a minimum wage example in response to someone who said

The vast majority of people

Then gets salty when I point out that the vast majority of workers are not on minimum wage. Ok, big guy.

Look up the meaning of the word majority. Showing that some people can't live on one income doesn't disprove his point.

Although good suggestion this is irrelevant for most of the people we are talking about. Most people in this situation do not have funds to move, start a farm, etc. They're already living paycheck to paycheck and have no extra money to make these changes.

Why would I use that? My example was to prove that two parent son min wage cannot support a child if one has to stay home....so why would I use anything but min wage here? It's literally the point to my whole argument. The fact that min wage SHOULD be an entry level wage/position doesn't exclude the fact that many do live off of min wage. You're making the same argument as the other fellow. Saying something should or shouldn't be is not helpful. Stating what is and looking at it from that perspective is however. The fact is there are a bunch of SINGLE parents working min wage that are now being asked to take car for their kids or pay extra to supply child care. My point was, and still is, there are many parents that can't do that no matter how much magical budgeting that can be done. So to use median income wouldn't make sense here my friend but thank you for the late input. Please read further next time before commenting. Also if we're being completely objective we would look at living wage per state. Here check this out https://livingwage.mit.edu/states/22. Living wage is Louisiana is almost 24 per hour for a single parent with one child. So we could multiple the min wage by 2 and still not make the living wage in one of the poorest states in the US. Again tell me how one parent is suppose dot just quite their job and still make ends meet?

This is an unhelpful example, why not use the median income so it's applicable to more families. The minimum wage is for entry level work, not supporting a family. Furthermore, your example is made even more extreme by the fact that only 5.5% of workers in California make the minimum wage according to the 2018 BLS report.

Going "off the grid" can save enough money. Wouldn't need both parents working if you had a decent farm for food and a way collect water.

Problem is cities were practically designed to prevent this because it's assumed if you're working in the city/suburbs then you're making enough money to buy food, water, and pay for the electricity you can't choose to not accept.

Death of factory jobs is mostly to blame. People refusing to leave is their own fault.

Don't live in an urban area but thank you. We'll see how to winds blow with this pandemic. Seems to be effecting a small part of the population, at least in terms of mortality, which is objectively a good sign at least. Stay safe my friend.

Thank you, I wish you the same. Keep safe out there, our current pandemic is going to hit urban/suburban areas much harder than flyover just due to how tightly people are packed in - resulting in a much worse R0.

Worst person to be right now is a person working the very jobs we've been talking about in this context. Retail/Service jobs in a city. shudder

I have a large family. My wife stays at home and has since we had child #1. It was hard when I was younger. It required great sacrifice and moving to a place where the rent isn't too damn high. With her support I've advanced much in my career and now it's easy. I'm not speaking hypothetically about anything.

For your sake, I hope you get to experience much of what the country has to offer. Leave the bubble you are currently in and see flyover country. It'll destroy your current belief system. A belief system common in cities/suburban areas only.
