I think you'll find people will strip an urban area of its birds and cats almost immediately in the face of food shortages.

There's absolutely no way for a city full of people to feed itself by foraging or hunting. The entire UK could only support about 15k in the Mesolithic that way.

Damn. So we really owe it to Farmers for keeping 99% of humanity alive. I guess the only way to survive a post-societal collapse is to plant new fruit trees and pray no one else finds it.

The only way to survive a severe collapse is to:

Have a couple of years of stored dried food, and hide it well. Preferably dig in and hide yourself. If you have any visible resources you can expect a mob of starving armed people to tear down your home to take them and if you have food production capacity it will be seized.

Strength in numbers find a nearby group to join with. Lone wolves dont do so well.

The most viable plants to grow are potatoes and sweet potatoes for calories per metre. Not fruit trees.

After a couple of years a lot of people will have died and the MZBs roaming around will have dropped right off. Then you can start being more open about producing food.

The High IQ move is to throw breadcrumbs at the starving caravan and watch them fight to the death over it. Any survivors can be easily recruited with the promise of more food. Even easier if there are Women. They can serve as concubines.
