Read Bertrand De Jouvenal's 'On Power' and google 'high low vs the middle' to find people talking about his book and this concept. It's a general trend that people seeking power use low status people to protect their power or gain power. Mao famously used lumpenproles in his revolution for example.

I don't follow that reactionary line completely though, how does it explain today the high, middle and lumpens being on one side against the lows and lower-middles? How does it explain fascist revolutions that were mass movements sprung up out of social capital? Sure there was some element of the middle in them but it was low and lower-middle mostly.
